THE CASTLE STUDIES GROUP JOURNALTHE NO CASTLE 29: 2015-16202 STUDIES GROUP JOURNAL NO 29: 2015-16 Sir Howard Colvin and The History of the King’s Works THE HISTORY OF THE KING’S WORKS - SURVEYS OF ROYAL CASTLES AND OTHER BUILD- INGS BEFORE l660 CHIEFLY IN THE PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE Corrected copy (incorporating hand-written additions) This is an attempt to list all the written surveys of royal castles and other buildings which are to be found in certain classes of documents in the Public Record Office. The classes concerned are:- (I) Those included in the Public Record Office List of Rentals and Surveys (Ii) Exchequer, Special Commissions (E176) (Iii) Duchy of Lancaster, Special Commissions (DL44) (Iv) Duchy of Lancaster, Depositions (DL3) (V) Chancery Inquisitions, Miscellaneous (C145) (Vi) Chancery Miscellanea (C47) A few surveys from manuscripts in the British Museum and elsewhere have been included, but no serious attempt has been made to locate surveys not among the Public Records. Even in the Public Record Office there are doubtless more surveys to be discovered, and contributors should not regard this as an exhaustive or definitive list. It is confined to written surveys, and although plans are occasionally attached to them, no attempt has been made to list plans and drawings as such. A list of plans dated earlier than l603 will be found on the open shelves in the Public Record Office, and there is also a card-index of plans of all dates which can be consulted by contributors. The surveys listed vary greatly in value, and although a number of doubtful cases have been checked, it has been impossible to examine every survey in order to ensure that it is relevant to the History of the King's Works. It is thought, however, that even in an imperfect form, such a list as this is likely to be a convenience to contributors.
