Dona Nobis Pacem, Grant Us Peace is the name of the annual holiday concert to be presented by the Vashon Island Chorale on December 3 and 4. Seventy-five singers, a full orchestra and a guest appearance by a brass quintet promise a spirited musical experience. Under the artistic direction of Gary D. Cannon, and with soloists Jennifer Krikawa, soprano, and Andrew Krikawa, baritone, the majestic Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams will fill the first half of the program. This powerful piece has not been performed on Vashon Island previously. British composer Vaughan Williams wrote this cantata in 1936 as a plea for peace amid growing fears of an approaching war in Europe. The six movements include passages from the Roman Catholic Mass, poetry by Walt Whitman, text from a speech by John Bright and writings from the Book of Jeremiah in the Bible. Interspersed with the theme of peace are haunting messages about the disruption of war and conflict. The second half of the concert program features Eight Days of Chanuka, new works recently composed by Abraham Kaplan, Ave Maria by Franz Biebl, Peace, Blue Heron Dance peace by Rick & Sylvia Powell and several traditional Christmas carols by Sir David Willcocks. Members of the Vashon Youth Chorus under the direction of Marita Nutcracker Ericksen will join the Chorale to close the program. By Janice Randall The concerts will be held at Bethel Church on Saturday, Dec. 3, 7:30pm and Sunday, Dec. 4, 3pm. Tickets ($12.50/general, $10/seniors & students) are available at www.brownpapertickets.com, the Vashon Bookshop and the Blue Heron.
