OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.COM / @OW_PANTHERS 3 2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

Old Westbury returns a pair of all-region selections to lead a mix of 17 returnees and 12 newcomers

Coming off a season in which the SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team narrowly missed out on a 2013 NCAA Tournament berth, expectations are high for the Panthers in 2014.

Behind a late-season surge, Old Westbury won 11 of its final 12 regular season games to qualify as the No.2 seed for the 2013 Skyline Conference Tournament. However, the run came to an end when the Panthers fell to top-seeded and six-time defending champion Farmingdale State in the title game for the fourth consecutive season. Last year, Old Westbury once again ran wild on the base paths, finishing with a national-leading 199 stolen bases to capture its third-straight NCAA Statistical Championship with 4.74 stolen bases per game.

Ahead of the 2014 campaign, Old Westbury has to fill big holes with the departures of two-time All-Skyline Conference selections in Paul Valerio and Brian Walsh. Topping Old Westbury's list of returnees are 2013 All-Region selections in senior Alex DiSanto (RHP, New Hyde Park, NY) and junior Jonathan Pagan (OF, Westbury, NY), along with 2013 All-Conference selections and seniors John Angelino (OF, Selden, NY) and Arismendy Nunez (RHP, Bronx, NY). This quartet will be leaned on heavily to pick up the slack, and much of the team's success depends on whether or not the foursome can shoulder the burden.

Fourth-year head coach Rod Stephan welcomes the additions of 12 newcomers to the 2014 squad, highlighted by three transfers with Division I experience in juniors Nick Yip (3B/OF/C, Elmhurst, NY) and Christian Faust (OF, Massapequa, NY), along with senior Byron White (OF, Jamaica, NY)-all of whom should help with the transition.

Furthermore, the Panthers return 17 lettermen from their 2013 squad. Just under half of the team's offensive at-bats hits are back, and Old Westbury also returns more than half of its starts, wins and innings pitched from a squad that went 25-16-1 a season ago.

Pitching Right-handers DiSanto and Nunez will lead a talented pitching staff in 2014. DiSanto set Old Westbury's single-season saves record last year by closing out 13 games. DiSanto also finished the year with a 0.31 ERA, struck out 25 batters in 28.2 innings pitched, and handcuffing the opposition to a .144 batting average.

Nunez led the conference with 66 strikeouts in 69.1 innings pitched as a junior, registering a 6-5 record with a 3.12 ERA in the process. Nunez also tallied a team-best two complete games, including an 11-strikeout, complete-game shutout against Maritime. Senior righty Frank DiMaria enters his fourth year as a Panther with an 8-3 career record. DiMaria is a reliable arm in the starting rotation who registered 38 strikeouts, compared to eight walks, in 42 innings pitched in 2013. Junior lefty Christopher Vitale emerged as a valuable starter last season, recording a 2-0 record with 29 strikeouts to log a 3.58 ERA in 32.2 innings.

Old Westbury also welcomes in a duo of right-handed transfers to the starting rotation. Senior Braylin Perez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) ranked seventh in the nation with 96 strikeouts as a member of John Jay College in 2013. Junior Tim Ingram (Westbury, NY) compiled a 4-0 record with 40 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched at last season.

Seniors righties Tyler Levine (East Meadow, NY), James Scagnelli (East Rockaway, NY) and James Wipperman (Valley Stream, NY), along with sophomores Tyler Kapela (Mineola, NY) and Nick Dorcean (Bellerose, NY), and junior transfer southpaw Caleb Olesen (Selden, NY) will bolster a Panther bullpen that will be led by DiSanto. Levine, the 2011 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year, has a 4-1 career-record and will be relied on for his senior leadership-as will Scagnelli (3.72 ERA, .152 BA in 9.2 IP) and Wip- perman (1.80 ERA, .222 BA in 5.0 IP). Kapela provided steady pitching for the Panthers in his freshman campaign, registering a 2.45 ERA in 25.2 innings logged. Olesen pitched the past two seasons for Dominican College at the NCAA Division II level.

Catcher Junior Brandon Stein will get the majority of starts behind the plate this spring. Stein ranked fourth in the conference with 193 putouts after appearances in a career-high 33 games last season at catcher. Backing up Stein will be a pair of freshmen, Carlos Bal- maceda (Brooklyn, NY) and Matteo Gaudio (Glen Cove, NY).

4 2014 OLD WESTBURY BASEBALL 2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

Infield Old Westbury's infield will be led by senior Kevin Licul (Levittown, NY) at first base. Licul returns healthy for his senior season and hit .328 in just 20 games of an injury-riddled first season as a Panther. His lefty bat will pay huge dividends in the middle of a stacked Panther lineup. Senior Alexander Abanavas (East Meadow, NY) played 13 games last season at first base and in the outfield as a defensive specialist, and will serve as Licul's backup and see time in a crowded outfield. The job at second base will be occupied by sophomore Joey Walsh (Bethpage, NY), who hit .286 and stole 10 bases in limited duty a year ago. Freshman Tommy Ziegen (Glen Cove, NY) will be tested early on after securing the spot as the opening day shortstop. Freshman Jesse Matos (Huntington, NY) will back up the middle infield positions while classmate Michael Cardino (Massapequa, NY) will back up at third and second base. Yip, a former New York Institute of Technology member who spent last season at Queensborough Community College, will start at the hot corner. Sophomore Thomas Whitenack (North Massapequa, NY), played sparingly last spring at third base, hitting .333 in 12 games and could push for playing time.

Outfield Pagan returns to lead the outfield, while White (left) with Faust right) take over at the corner spots, respectively. Pagan will call the shots in center field after leading the Panthers in batting (.371), triples (2), home runs (2) and slugging (.598). Pagan, a five-tool player, also swiped 20-of-22 bases in 31 games during his first year at Old Westbury. White transfers to Old Westbury from Blue- field College, and also played at Division I Bethune-Cookman as a freshman in 2011. Faust, another transfer with Division I experi- ence, played at South Carolina Upstate in 2011 before playing at Catawba Valley Community College last season.

Another candidate for outfield playing time is junior Jacob Coners, who hit .338 with 19 RBI, 18 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 33 games in 2013. Sophomore Robinson Hernandez, a transfer from , will back up in the outfield.

Designated Hitter Angelino will see time in right field, as well at designated hitter. As a junior, the two-time All-Skyline Conference selection stole a career-high 24 bases and hit .322 with two home runs, 20 RBI and 30 runs scored in 40 games.

Schedule Four of Old Westbury's 2014 opponents participated in last season's NCAA Tournament, and will provide the Panthers with a barometer of their potency. The Panthers will also enjoy the added benefit of playing 18 of its 40 games in the confines of its own Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury opens the season on the road with a four-game series against Frostburg State (Feb. 22-23) in Thomasville, North Carolina, before taking on #4 Ithaca (Mar. 1), Baruch (Mar. 1) and #2 Southern Maine (Mar. 2) in Yaphank, New York. The Panthers open at home with a double header against Keene State (Mar. 8), and then welcome Yeshiva to open conference play March 14. Old Westbury welcomes #3 Kean to campus on March 25, as well as New Paltz (Mar. 16), New Jer- sey City (Mar. 20), Rutgers-Newark (Apr. 8), Vassar (Apr. 9), Stevens (Apr. 17) and USMMA (Apr. 29) for non-conference matchups. The Panthers also host the likes of St. Joseph's (L.I.) (Mar. 29), Mount Saint Vincent (Apr. 5) and Mount Saint Mary (Apr. 12) for Skyline Conference action in Old Westbury.

The top six teams in the conference will meet April 30 and May 2-4 to determine the winner of the Skyline Conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
