In the past year the team has taken part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 3-Mile Walk at Jones Beach. The event, which took place October 18, 2008, saw the Pride raise several hundred dollars for cancer research.

The team also took part in the Hofstra University Community Blood Drive and was recognized for their efforts in donating by the University. “The team came out in Hofstra in the Community Hofstra full force, directly from working out, and represented Athletics admirably,” said Chairperson of University Blood Drives Susan Czuwak. “These strong and talented young women donated blood, recruited donors, and waited until the last member of the team had finished being processed before leaving. Not only did their contribution positively impact the lives of others needing blood, they modeled what commitment and teamwork are all about. The Women’s Lacrosse team demonstrates excellence in athletics, service to their community and the best that Hofstra University has to offer.”

The team is also active in the Nick Colleluori Headstrong Foundation, which was founded by former Pride Men’s Lacrosse player Nick Colleluori and raises money and awareness for the treatment of blood cancer. Colleluori started the foundation before succumbing to non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2006.

This past fall, the Pride volunteered their time at The INN, a local homeless shelter, and restocked shelves in the facilities food pantry.

On the lacrosse side, the team is frequent participants in clinics around Long Island. Recently, the team volunteered at a clinic for special needs children organized by the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation.

36 HOFSTRA LACROSSE Hofstra in the Community This past year, through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Gina Mulieri. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a 501(c) (3), non-profit, charitable organization that improves the quality of life for children suffering with pediatric brain tumors and helps fund research. FOJ matches a child with a college or high school sports team based on geographic location. Once the team and child have been matched, there is a ceremonial adoption. A deep bond is formed between the child, the child’s family and the sports team. The relationship is a priceless gift. The gift is in the relationship; a child is gaining a loving support network and the team is gaining an insight into the value of life and the power of love. The result of this connection is mutual respect, support, friendship and love.

“Gina provides inspiration for our team through her light-hearted spirit and energetic personality. Whenever Gina is around, everyone forgets their own problems and becomes overwhelmed with her contagious happiness.” Courtney O’Connor

“I just met Gina this year, being a new member on the Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse team, and whenever I see Gina she automatically puts a smile on my face. She’s a very smart, brave, beautiful girl with a big heart and she makes us all laugh with the great sense of humor that she has. I know that I am very lucky to be kind of a “big sister” to Gina. If anything, I look up to Gina with everything she has to go through. I would love to be able to take her bowling with some of the girls on the team, or something just to get her mind off of the craziness that is going on in her life. Being a part of this team, this family, a family that Gina is a part of makes me realize even more how precious things are in life and that we shouldn’t take anything for granted and that if you have the right people in your life, it makes certain things a lot easier to get through.” Liz Falco

“Having Gina as part of our team has brought more energy and appreciation to our team. Gina has made us realize that no matter how hard life may get, just keep your head up and always have a positive attitude. Gina has been a great addition to our team and has made us all live our lives more fully.” Ashley Jones
