The findings are DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/045065ar categorized as per the nature of the example and translation strategy, and they are further discussed within the framework of domestication and foreignizing. See table of contents Factors that may affect translators, such as context, the demands of publishers in Turkey and the genre of the novels – bestsellers – and the relations between best-sellerization, popular fiction, and translation are also discussed. The Publisher(s) conclusion includes reflections concerning the consistency in the choices of translators, the least preferred strategies and eleven factors that may affect the Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal translators of bestsellers. It is argued that the fact that the source language is English and the source books are bestsellers have affected the choices of the ISSN translators. In conclusion, some suggestions in reference to the translation of bestsellers are made and it is emphasized that not only translations of classical 0026-0452 (print) literature, but also of popular fiction constitute a fruitful field of study for 1492-1421 (digital) translation scholars. Formulating Western Fiction in Garrett Touch of Texas
AWEJ for Translation & Literary Studies, Volume 2, Number 2, May 2018 Pp. 142 -155 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.24093/awejtls/vol2no2.10 Formulating Western Fiction in Garrett Touch of Texas Elisabeth Ngestirosa Endang Woro Kasih Faculty of Art and Education, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, Bandarlampung, Indonesia Abstract Western fiction as one of the popular novels has some common conventions such as the setting of life in frontier filled with natural ferocity and uncivilized people. This type of fiction also has a hero who is usually a ranger or cowboy. This study aims to find a Western fiction formula and look for new things that may appear in the novel Touch of Texas as a Western novel. Taking the original convention of Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales, this study also looks for the invention and convention of Touch of Texas by using Cawelti’s formula theory. The study finds that Garrett's Touch of Texas not only features a natural malignancy against civilization, a ranger as a single hero, and a love story, but also shows an element of revenge and the other side of a neglected minority life. A hero or ranger in this story comes from a minority group, a mixture of white blood and Indians. The romance story also shows a different side. The woman in the novel is not the only one to be saved, but a Ranger is too, especially from the wounds and ridicule of the population as a ranger of mixed blood. The story ends with a romantic tale between Jake and Rachel. Further research can be done to find the development of western genre with other genres such as detective and mystery. -

I Was a Teenage Negro! Blackface As a Vehicle of White Liberalism in Finian's Rainbow
I Was a Teenage Negro! Blackface as a Vehicle of White Liberalism in Finian's Rainbow Russell Peterson Obviously we hope you will enjoy your evening with us, but before the curtain goes up we would like to forewarn you about what you will see. Finian s Rainbow is a joyous musical cel ebrating life, love, and the magic that lives in each of us, but it is also something more. Produced in 1947, it was one of the American theater's first attempts to challenge racism and big otry. With the two-edged sword of ridicule and laughter it punctured the stereotypes that corrupted America. In doing so it created something of a stereotype itself. If it seems at times that our cast makes fun of racial or social groups, it is only that we wish to expose and deride the bigotry that still would gain a hearing in our hearts. —program note from Edison Jun ior High School's (Sioux Falls, SD) 1974 production of Finian's Rainbow I might as well confess right up front that this article's title is a bit of a tease. While I did play a sharecropper in Edison Junior High's 1974 production of Finian s Rainbow, I was as white onstage as I was (and am) off. In this case, however, color-coordination of actor and role was less a matter of race-appro priate casting than of directorial whim. Allow me to explain. 0026-3079/2006/4703/4-035$2.50/0 American Studies, 47:3/4 (Fall-Winter 2006): 35-60 35 36 Russell Peterson Finian was a big Broadway hit in 1947. -

ENGLISH LITERATURE Please consult the online class schedule for specific days and times of these courses. https://sunspot.sdsu.edu/schedule/search ENGL 624 GOTHIC BODIES P. SERRATO In this seminar we will delve into some historically diverse works of gothic fiction, concerning ourselves in particular with the significance of different types of bodies that feature in this fiction. To be sure, many of the bodies that we will encounter will be anthropomorphic. Some of these bodies will be human but some will not…or they may be but it is not clear whether they are or are not. In some texts the body will be a social one, or it will be a manufactured one, or it will be an architectural one. Whatever the case, we will have much to discuss vis-à-vis race, gender, sexuality, class, history, and politics. Primary texts will likely include: Eliza Parsons, The Castle of Wolfenbach (ISBN 0977784169) Richard Marsh, The Beetle (1934555495) William Henry Ireland, The Abbess: A Romance Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera (0451531876) Patrick McGrath, Dr. Haggard’s Disease (9780679752615) Rudolfo Anaya, Tortuga (0826336248) James Purdy, In a Shallow Grave (1948405245) The Nightmare Before Christmas Stephanie Meyer, Twilight (0316015849) Heather Kassner, The Bone Garden (1250250536) For our first class meeting (January 27), please have read all of Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris (ISBN 9780140443530).
