    Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation.     Gamer Symphony Orchestra Spring 2014 Concert Saturday, May 3, 2014, 2 p.m. Dekelboum Concert Hall Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Jacob Coppage-Gross, Conductor Kevin Mok, Conductor Kyle G. Jamolin, Choral Director Bryan Doyle, Assistant Conductor About the GSO In the fall of 2005, student violist Michelle Eng sought to create an orchestral group that played video game music. With a half-dozen others from the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra, she founded GSO to achieve that dream. By the time of the ensemble’s first public performance in spring 2006, its size had quadrupled. Today GSO provides a musical and social outlet to 120 members. It is the world’s first collegiate ensemble to draw its repertoire exclusively from the soundtracks of video games. The ensemble is entirely student run, which includes conducting and musical arranging. In February of 2012 the GSO collaborated with Video Games Live!, for the performances at the Strathmore in Bethesda, Md. The National Philharmonic per- formed the GSO’s arrangement of “Korobeiniki” from Tetris to two sold-out houses. In May of 2012 the GSO was invited to perform as part of the Smithsonian’s The Art of Video Games exhibit. Aside from its concerts, GSO also holds the “Deathmatch for Charity” (renamed the “Gamer Olympics” this year) video game tournament every spring. All proceeds benefit Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. At once an intense thriller, a black comedy, and a period drama, the film takes its title from the term ‘Jingo’ or ‘Jingoism,’ referring to a form of hypernationalism and aggres- sive foreign policy. In an effort to safeguard what they perceive as national interests, a Jingoist favors threats and/or actual force over peaceful relations. Though the term Jingo has fallen out of the lexicon since the early 1900’s, the filmmakers believe that it represents the unsettling trends in America’s domestic and foreign relations, as well as, an increased presence of isolationist and fascist political movements around the globe. The movie follows Will Wright, an everyday man who makes a citizen's arrest after suspecting a local shop owner may be part of a terrorist cell. The story originated as ‘Crazy Eyes,’ a play by John Buffalo Mailer intended to examine Amer- ica’s response to the violent attack. In his impressive feature directorial debut, Charles Kopelson, inspired by the gritty urban social justice films of Sidney Lumet, tactfully brings out strong performances from a quartet of actors: Peter Cambor, Thom Bishops, Lacey Dorn, and John Buffalo Mailer.
