Think about some Ben Hunter, of your most heart-felt memories and you’re likely to associate them to Marian Santiago, a particular song or musician. Think about happy times as a child, your Photos: Pat Lakin angst filled teenage years, your first love or broken heart, singing with your children, or hearing lyrics that really spoke to you when you needed it most. My entire life has been filled with music, from violin in elementary school, ON THE COVER: flute in middle and high school marching and concert band, community Celebrate summer at your public library. orchestra, theatre orchestra and minoring in music in college. Yet even being surrounded by music there are still musical memories that evoke such powerful emotions – a sense of happiness and well-being, nostalgia, and peace, love and contentment. When I was a little girl my dad would pick me up and dance with me to the rhythm of Salsa music. I remember giggling with a sense of joy, feeling like I was a “big girl” and the feeling of love and everything being right with the world. To this day I love the beat of Latin music that takes me back to a carefree, joyous, uninhibited time. Whenever I hear and the Silver Bullet Band I am taken back to high school and college when I would crank up the volume and rock out to the ” and especially Night Moves. His music was my coming-of-age soundtrack. And Kenny G. Twenty years have gone by yet I start swaying just hearing in my mind his gentle, soothing saxophone. When my son was a baby I snuggled him and rocked him to sleep each night to Kenny G, The Moment CD. I can still feel him in my arms as he gradually relaxed into slumber. Take time to appreciate the music and moments that have framed your life.

to people and making their days brighter! I’m excited about this summer, too, because I’ll get to help serve lunch for the Summer Break Spot. As a volunteer last summer, I helped the kids get their tray of food and get situated at a table. This summer, the library is planning to host a program for teens before the Summer Break Spot lunch, and I’m looking forward to helping with that as well. I think that the library is the best place for students to earn volunteer hours for several reasons. First, because it’s a lot of fun. I’ve also gained experiences that will help me when I apply for jobs in the future. The opportunities I have had to work with others and as a team will come in handy in my future. Plus, I’ve met new people and made some new friends. It’s great to get to work with my friends over the summer.
