FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. The bigmouth sleeper is dull coloured (Fig. 1), its colour can range from olive to brown. Its average length is 20-60 cm with a weight of up to 2 kg for adults. It has a blunt snout, a short broad head, and a stout body. In addition to the broad, rounded caudal (tail) fin, this species also has two dorsal fins (Fig. 1). There are several rows of small conical shaped teeth on its jaw (Mowbray, 2004). It deserves its common name “bigmouth” (Gregg, 2015) (Fig. 2). DISTRIBUTION. It can be found in Brazil to south Texas and south Florida (Mowbray, 2004). The bigmouth sleeper is also abundant on most Caribbean islands and in Central America and South America’s Atlantic coast. HABITAT AND ACTIVITY. Present in lakes, rivers and fresh water streams in forested and mountainous areas (Mowbray, 2004). This species is so well camouflaged and motionless it appears absent in its natural habitat (Fig. 3). UWI The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago Ecology FOOD AND FEEDING. The adult feeds on river shrimps and small fishes (Mowbray, 2004), whereas the juveniles consume insects. One of the most common prey of this ambush predator is cichlid fry (Lehtonen et al., 2012). REPRODUCTION. May and June are the peak of gonadosomatic indices (size of gonads relative to the body) and the least in January and February. -

Preface The Frobenius Expedition to North-Western Australia, March-December, 1938, made a survey of a number of the picture caves and rock-shelters of the Kimberley tribes. The World War and post-war conditions have so far prevented publication, so that the account given here is the first to be presented. The extensive paintings found in rock galleries of the Kimberleys form a class of their own among the widely diffused drawings and paintings of .he Australian aborigines. Professor Elkin, who in 1928 investigated some of these galleries, was the first to realize their significance. 1 The very first discovery of representations of the human-shaped but mouthless mythic being Wond'ina was made by Sir George Grey over a century ago.- About 1900 Mr. Fred. Brockman travelled the Kimberleys and took photographs of whatever Wond'ina paintings he came across; they were published by F. M. House/' In the Northern Territory, D. S. Davidson found rock paintings to a certain extent related to the Wond'ina paintings ; in his comprehensive book on Australian aboriginal art he reproduces also some of Brockman's and Elkin's photographs. 4 Grey's much- discussed reproductions can now be compared with the recovered originals. 5 Mr. Coate's researches have widened and deepened what had already been established in substance by Professor Elkin. A different type of representations of human figures occurs in Central and Northern Kimberley. -

Broadening the scope of conservation efforts to protect entire communities provides several advantages over the current species-specific focus, yet ecologists have been hampered by the fact that predictive modeling of multiple species is not directly amenable to traditional statistical approaches. Perhaps the greatest hurdle in community-wide modeling is that communities are composed of both co-occurring groups of species and species arranged independently along environmental gradients. Therefore, commonly used ‘‘short-cut’’ methods such as the modeling of so-called ‘‘assemblage types’’ are problematic. Our study demonstrates the utility of a multiresponse artificial neural network (MANN) to model entire community membership in an integrative yet species-specific manner. We compare MANN to two traditional approaches used to predict community composition: (1) a species-by-species approach using logistic regression analysis (LOG) and (2) a ‘‘classification-then-modeling’’ approach in which sites are classified into assemblage ‘‘types’’ (here we used two-way indicator species analysis and multiple discriminant analysis [MDA]). For freshwater fish assemblages of the North Island, New Zealand, we found that the MANN outperformed all other methods for predicting community composition based on multiscaled descriptors of the environment. -

There are totally 361 recorded species of gobioid fishes belonging to 113 genera, 5 subfamilies, and 9 families. This gobioid fauna of China comprises 16.2% of 2211 known living gobioid species of the world. This report repre- sents a summary of previous researches on the suborder Gobioidei. A recently diagnosed subfamily, Polyspondylogobiinae, were assigned from the type genus and type species: Polyspondylogobius sinen- sis Kimura & Wu, 1994 which collected around the Pearl River Delta with high extremity of vertebral count up to 52-54. The undated comprehensive checklist of gobioid fishes in China will be provided in this paper.
