Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways. -

The free speech fight serves as a case study in localized Midwestern radicalism, specifically its unique manifestation in Kansas City. While many scholars of labor radicalism have focused on the larger metropolitan areas such as Chicago, New York City, and Detroit, this study departs from that approach by examining how labor radicalism took root and developed outside of the metropolitan centers. The Industrial Workers of the World, one of the most radical unions in American history, provides an excellent example of an organization that situated itself outside of the traditional spheres of labor organization through its intense focus on recruiting and radicalizing large segments of the unskilled and marginalized workforce throughout the country. iii In the Midwest, particularly in Kansas City, this focus evolved into a growing recognition that in order to be a stable, combative, and growing union in the Midwest, traditional notions of only recruiting white skilled workers employed in industry would not work. -

Justice Crucified* A Synopsis, Chronology, and Selective Bibliography of the Sacco and Vanzetti Case Gil Fagiani ____ _ The Enduring Legacy of the Sacco and Vanzetti Case Two Italian immigrants, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, became celebrated martyrs in the struggle for social justice and politi cal freedom for millions of Italian Americans and progressive-minded people throughout the world. Having fallen into a police trap on May 5, 1920, they eventually were indicted on charges of participating in a payroll robbery in South Braintree, Massachusetts in which a paymas ter and his guard were killed. After an unprecedented international campaign, they were executed in Boston on August 27, 1927. Intense interest in the case stemmed from a belief that Sacco and Vanzetti had not been convicted on the evidence but because they were Italian working-class immigrants who espoused a militant anarchist creed. -

American Communist Idealism in George Cram Cook's the Athenian
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4312/keria.20.3.7-25 Edith Hall American Communist Idealism in George Cram Cook’s The Athenian Women (1918) The distinctive history of ancient drama in pro-Soviet, Communist, Marxist, and workers’ theatres outside the Soviet Union and the “Eastern Bloc” is iden- tifiable almost immediately after the Russian revolution of 1917. In the USA it was launched by The Athenian Women, written by the American George Cram Cook, with input from his long-term lover, whom he had recently married, the novelist Susan Glaspell.1 The Athenian Women is a serious, substantial three-act drama set in Periclean Athens, but drawing on Aristophanes’ “women” plays produced from 411 onwards, Lysistrata, Thesmophoriazusae and Ecclesiazusae. Although it is a new work, The Athenian Women also engages with Thucydides’ account of the Peloponnesian war, and with the figure of Socrates as portrayed in both Plato and Xenophon. According to Glaspell, when Cook was writing the play during the summer of 1917, he was filtering the daily news from Europe through the lens of Thucydides, often quoting the historian’s dictum that “in all human probability these things will happen again”.2 The play states its socialist and feminist politics in the mouths of the two main revolutionary characters, Lysicles and Aspasia respectively. Although the play was not particularly suc- cessful, its 1918 production by the Provincetown Players had an indirect im- pact on the future directions taken by progressive and political theatre in the USA, especially through the subsequent dramas of Glaspell and the soon-to-be- world-famous playwright she and Cook mentored, Eugene O’Neill.3 1 On Glaspell’s fiction cf. -

The works are put in the context of the national movement for woman suffrage and focuses on the authors’ arguments for suffrage as well as on their formal choices, ranging from realism to expressionism, satire and parody. Vampires in Transition
VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION Daniel Berjano Rodríguez Utrecht University and Universidad de Granada GEMMA 2016-2018 Supervisor: Adelina Sánchez Espinosa (UGR) Second supervisor: Gianmaria Colpani (UU) July 2018 VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION ABSTRACT In Vampires in Transition, I develop semiotic analyses of two key films of the Spanish transition: Elisa, vida mia (Carlos Saura, 1977) and Arrebato (Ivan Zulueta, 1980). Building off Gilles Deleuze's semiotics (1986, 1989) and Teresa de Lauretis' film theory (1984, 1987) – both drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce (1930-35/1958), I have designed three inter-connected concepts in relation to the vampire figuration: 'vampire-images', 'camera-vampires', and the 'phoenix'. One one hand, these concepts aim to approach the films under study through decolonial and trans-feminist perspectives. On the other hand, they intend to draw meaningful insights on Hispanic film studies in relation to what Donna Haraway calls “informatics of domination” (1991c). Departing from one of the peripheral meanings of the vampire – a male sexual predator, the vampire has been designed as a perverse figuration of structural violence in cybernetic capitalism which could help us understand the relationship between massive addictive habits of digital machines and western patriarchal agendas, as Wendy Huy Kyong Chun studies (2016). Drawing on Teresa de Luretis (1984) and my own trans-faggot experience, vampire-images are designed to give an account of the processes of simulation that work to erase traces of exploitation. They depart from Gilles Deleuze's time-images of modern cinema (1989), which imply irrational cuts caused by particular relinkages of sound and visual data. In addition, as my analysis of Elisa, vida mia attempts to prove, vampire-images involve icons of women as objectified or subordinated to men. -

This pregnant moment in time was the result ofdecades of ferment, indeed more than 100 years of growing agitation to curb the excesses of American capitalism, beginning with Jefferson's warnings about the deleterious effects ofurbanized culture, and proceeding through the painful dislocation ofthe emerging industrial economy, the ex- cesses ofspeculation during the Civil War, the rise ofthe robber barons, the suppression oflabor unions, the exploitation of immigrant labor, through to the exposes ofthe muckrakers. By the decade ofthe ' teens, the evils ofcapitalism were widely acknowledged, even by champions ofthe system. Socialism became capitalism's logical alternative and the rallying point for the disenchanted. It was, of course, merely a vision, largely untested. But that is exactly why the socialist movement was so formidable. The artists and writers of the Masses didn't need to defend socialism when Rockefeller's henchmen were gunning down mine workers and their families in Ludlow, Colorado. Eventually, the American socialist movement would shatter on the rocks ofthe Russian revolution, when it was finally confronted with the reality ofa socialist state, but that story comes later, after the Masses was run from the stage.
