Transport in India Transport in the Republic of India Is an Important
Transport in India Transport in the Republic of India is an important part of the nation's economy. Since theeconomic liberalisation of the 1990s, development of infrastructure within the country has progressed at a rapid pace, and today there is a wide variety of modes of transport by land, water and air. However, the relatively low GDP of India has meant that access to these modes of transport has not been uniform. Motor vehicle penetration is low with only 13 million cars on thenation's roads.[1] In addition, only around 10% of Indian households own a motorcycle.[2] At the same time, the Automobile industry in India is rapidly growing with an annual production of over 2.6 million vehicles[3] and vehicle volume is expected to rise greatly in the future.[4] In the interim however, public transport still remains the primary mode of transport for most of the population, and India's public transport systems are among the most heavily utilised in the world.[5] India's rail network is the longest and fourth most heavily used system in the world transporting over 6 billionpassengers and over 350 million tons of freight annually.[5][6] Despite ongoing improvements in the sector, several aspects of the transport sector are still riddled with problems due to outdated infrastructure, lack of investment, corruption and a burgeoning population. The demand for transport infrastructure and services has been rising by around 10% a year[5] with the current infrastructure being unable to meet these growing demands. According to recent estimates by Goldman Sachs, India will need to spend $1.7 Trillion USD on infrastructure projects over the next decade to boost economic growth of which $500 Billion USD is budgeted to be spent during the eleventh Five-year plan. -

WKCD-546 Legislative Council Subcommittee on West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) Development M+ in West Kowloon Cultural District Purpose This paper seeks to give a full account of the proposal to develop a forward-looking cultural institution with museum functions - M+ as a core arts and cultural facility in the West Kowloon Cultural District (“WKCD”). Background 2. In September 2003, the Government launched the “Invitation for Proposals” (“IFP”) for developing WKCD as a world-class arts, cultural, entertainment and commercial district. The IFP had specified a cluster of four museums with four themes (moving image, modern art, ink and design) commanding a total Net Operating Floor Area (“NOFA”) of at least 75 000 m², and an art exhibition centre as Mandatory Requirements of the project. 3. After the IFP for WKCD was discontinued, the Government appointed the Museums Advisory Group (“MAG”) under the Consultative Committee on Core Arts and Cultural Facilities of WKCD in April 2006 to advise on the need for the four museums previously proposed and their preferred themes, the need to include museums with other themes, the scale and major requirements of each museum and the need for and major specifications of the Art Exhibition Centre. MAG’s deliberations process 4. The MAG conducted a public consultation exercise from mid-May to mid-June 2006 to solicit views on the proposed museum in WKCD. During the period, two open public forums, one focus group meeting and three presentation hearings were held apart from wide publicity arranged through advertisements, radio announcements, press release and invitation letters. 28 written submissions and 30 views were received during the consultation period. -

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Loughborough University Institutional Repository Enoch and Potter: Paratransit regulatory revolution Paratransit: the need for a regulatory revolution in the light of institutional inertia1 Marcus Enoch* and Stephen Potter** *School of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University, Leicestershire LE11 3TU. **Department of Engineering and Innovation, Faculty of Maths, Computing and Technology, The Open University, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA 1 This chapter has been accepted for publication in a forthcoming book about paratransit to be published by Emerald (edited by Corinne Mulley and John Nelson). 1 Enoch and Potter: Paratransit regulatory revolution Abstract Purpose: This chapter adopts a transport systems approach to explore why the adoption of paratransit modes is low and sporadic. Regulatory and institutional barriers are identified as a major reason for this. The chapter then reviews key trends and issues relating to the uptake of, and barriers to, paratransit modes. Based on this analysis a new regulatory structure is proposed. Approach: Case studies and research/practice literature. Findings: Following an exploration of the nature of paratransit system design and traditional definitions of ‘paratransit’, it is concluded that institutional barriers are crucial. However, current societal trends and service developments, and in particular initiatives from the technology service industry, are developing significant new paratransit models. The chapter concludes with a proposed redefinition of paratransit to facilitate a regulatory change to help overcome its institutional challenges. Research Implications: A paratransit transformation of public transport services would produce travel behaviours different from models and perspectives built around corridor/timetabled public transport services.
