9 The British Alliance of 1812–14 Chapter Outline This chapter examines the War of 1812 and, in particular, the role that Tecumseh had in this event. By the early 1800s, the intentions of the Americans were clear. The Americans were expanding, and it would be to the west where they would seek land. The War of 1812 can be viewed as a continu- ance of the American War of Independence, as this inconclusive war had left unresolved several im- portant matters, such as those relating to Indigenous Peoples and their lands. In a similar fashion to Obwandiyag, Tecumseh, a part-Shawnee and part-Cree leader, rose to the forefront as an advocate for a pan-Indigenous movement. Like Obwandiyag, Tecumseh was linked to a prophet. Tenskwa- tawa was known as the Shawnee Prophet and happened to be Tecumseh’s brother. Tenskwatawa argued that no particular tribe had the right to give up land as its own. Tecumseh had a particular disdain for Americans as both his father and brother were killed in US frontier wars. He chose to side with the British not because he favoured them but rather because he saw them as the lesser of two evils. Tecumseh challenged the cessions of lands that the Americans were obtaining, particularly those claimed in Indiana Territory. Throughout 1812 to 1813, Tecumseh led Indigenous forces to victory af- ter victory over the Americans. Tecumseh eventually met his demise at Moraviantown where, unsup- ported by British troops that had been promised, he was killed in October 1813. The death of Tecum- seh had immediate impacts since no leader could fill his role as a catalyst for a pan-Indigenous move- ment. -

Explore the different perspectives of First Nations, Great Britain, the colonists in Upper Canada, and the U.S.A. 2. Recognize the importance of the First Nations alliance with the British. 3. Examine the historical significance of the Battle of Detroit in August, 1812. Materials Photocopies of handouts. Masking tape, chalk, twine or string to create outline map of Upper Canada on the floor. Prior Knowledge It would be an asset for students to: • recognize some of the major causes and events leading up to the outbreak of the War of 1812 War of 1812, Historical Thinking Project Lessons (Hux), Lesson 19 Assessment • Individual student contributions to group work and group performance and a group Tableau. • Teacher feedback to groups. • Individual reflections on learning. Detailed Lesson Plan Focus Question: How significant was the British and First Nations victory at Detroit in July-August 1812? 1. Display a map of Upper and Lower Canada and the Ohio Country prior to the War of 1812 and have the students identify the areas of Canadian, First Nations and American settlement. Fort Wellington National Historic Site Guardian of the St
Fort Wellington National Historic Site Guardian of the St. Lawrence Open May to Thanksgiving Weekend Strategically built along the St. Lawrence, Fort Wel- lington is now one of Canada’s best preserved British forts. Built in Prescott during the War of 1812, Fort Wellington de- fended the vital St. Lawrence shipping route. Although Fort Wellington was never attacked, it was the staging point for a successful raid on Ogdensburg in 1813 . The fort was later abandoned . Fort Wellington was again called into service in 1837 when Upper and Lower Canada rose up in rebellion. The fort be- Photos ©Fort Wellington came the main depot for the area’s militia and in 1838, mili- tia stationed at Fort Wellington were called into battle. Expecting to be seen as liberators, American rebels landed at nearby Windmill Point but were met by 2,000 British soldiers and militia instead. In 1923, Fort Wellington became a National Historic Site and is now operated by Parks Canada. The fort consists of earthworks surrounded by a palisade. Inside, you can stroll by the officers’ quarters, discover the coponniere tunnel, explore the three-storey blockhouse, and chat with the costumed interpretive guides. Children can make their visit an adventure by becoming Parks Canada Xplorers to discover this unique fort. The site also boasts a new visitors center featuring the wreck of an 1812 -era gunboat. Daily visits are self-guided and guided tours of the fort are offered every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August beginning at 1:30pm. During the summer months, the fort offers summer camps for children and also hosts an annual Canada Day Celebration every July 1st from 10:00am to 4:00pm. -

While we have not yet had time to develop the complete design and details for the proposed relocation, we have looked at the house and we are confident that it can be successfully moved and restored. We have reviewed your comments in your letter of July 22, 2019 to the IBI Group, specifically items 2 & 4 in the comments on the HIA. Item 2 requests clarification regarding the preservation of the stone foundation when the dwelling is moved. We believe that preservation of the visible portion of the stone foundation between grade and the brick would meet the intent of the designating bylaw and the approach which we have used on previous similar projects is to salvage the stone from the foundation, place the building on a new concrete foundation constructed with a shelf in the concrete, and re-lay the salvaged stone so no concrete is visible in the finished project. In cases where the stone wall is of particular importance, we have documented the positions of the stones and replaced them exactly as originally located on the building, although in most cases the use of the salvaged material laid in a pattern matching the original is sufficient to meet the intent. -
