Golden Eagles Cross Country and Track & Field 2 Co a c h i n g St a ff After leading the Golden Eagle cross country and track & field teams to outstanding achievements in 2007-08, Christopher Asher returns for his seventh season as Cal State L.A.’s head coach for women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Asher led the women’s cross country team to its first California Collegiate Athletic Association championship since 1994 in 2007 and guided the squad to a second- place finish in the West Region and a fifth-place national finish. Head Coach He was named the CCAA Coach of the Year in women’s cross country and he was named the USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Outdoor Track & field Head Coach of the Year.

The 2007-08 season was an impressive follow-up to a memorable 2006-07 campaign. Asher led the women’s cross country team to an NCAA Division II West Region championship, a second- place finish in the CCAA and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division II Championships in 2006. The fourth-place finish is the highest national placing in the program’s history. He also led the 2007 women’s indoor track & field team to a 13th-place national finish. 2008-09 Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles Cross Country and Track & Field 20 Je s s e Ow e n s Tr a c k Jesse Owens Track is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982.

The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.

The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.
