2009-10 Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles Cross Country and Track & Field 2 Co a c h i n g St a ff After leading the Golden Eagle cross country and teams to some impressive accomplishments in 2008-09, Christopher Asher returns for his eighth season as Cal State L.A.’s head coach for women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Asher led the women’s outdoor track and field team to a seventh-place national finish, the cross country team to a 13th-place national finish, the women’s indoor track and field team to a 26th-place national finish and the men’s outdoor track and field team to a 41st-place national finish. Both the women’s cross country and women’s outdoor track and field teams finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Five Golden Eagles earned All-CCAA honors, three earned All-Region honors and two earned All-America honors. In track and field in 2006, three runners made it to nationals, including Pilar Delgado, who was named the NCAA Division II West Region Athlete of the Year. ** NCAA Championships are Division II unless noted About Track Jesse Owens Track is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 specta- tors, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world- class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982.

The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.

The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.

2009-10 Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles Cross Country and Track & Field 22 Go l d e n Ea g l e Ol y m p i a n s Since Cal State L.A. was founded in 1947, at least one Golden Eagle track and field athlete has competed in 13 of the 16 Summer Olympics. In fact, CSULA had a track and field representative in 11-straight Summer Games, beginning with the 1960 Olympics in Rome and ending in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

A total of 23 Cal State L.A. track and field athletes, representing 10 nations, have qualified for the Olympics in 52 total events, capturing 15 medals (six gold, eight silver, one bronze).

1948, London 1980, Moscow Mal Whitfield (USA) - gold medal, 800m; gold medal, 1,600m relay; Sharon Dabney (USA) - 1,600m relay (U.S. boycott) silver medal, 400m Fred Dixon (USA) - decathlon (U.S. boycott) Denean Howard (USA) - 400m (U.S. boycott) 1952, Helsinki Sherri Howard (USA) - 1,600m relay (U.S. boycott) Mal Whitfield (USA) - gold medal, 800m; silver medal, 1,600m relay; Jennifer Inniss (Guyana) - 13th in long jump; 200m semifinalist 6th in 400m Jackie Pusey (Jamaica) - 200m semifinalist; 400m semifinalist George Brown (USA) - long jump finalist Diane Williams (USA) - 400m relay (U.S. boycott)

As a member of Cal State L.A.’s track and field team from 1983 to 1985, she had many top finishes sandwiched around an eighth-place finish for her native Jamaica in the 1984 Olympics. Then Farmer-Patrick’s career really accelerated. In 1987, she just missed a medal in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Rome. As a 400m hurdler for the U.S., she won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics, gold medal at the 1989 and 1992 World Cups, gold medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games, and numerous other medals. Competing in glamorous skirt-outfits, she launched a side career starring in many television commercials. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology and a master’s degree in human resources. At the 2004 summer , she served as the lead athlete services coordinator for all sports. She currently chairs the USA Track & Field’s Athlete’s Advisory Committee and serves as the United States Olympic Committee’s athlete representative. Farmer-Patrick is married to another Olympic hurdler, David

Sandra Farmer-Patrick Patrick. They have a son and a daughter.
