If you have the slightest interest in Pink Floyd, do not miss this group when they return to larger venues later this year. You won’t even need acid to blow your mind.” ✭✮✮✮✮ Michael Hann, Financial Times “The sound was immense, electrifying, galvanising, mesmerising and still deeply strange, bending the formats of primal rock into all kind of weird and wonderful shapes. From the warped garage rock opening of Interstellar Overdrive, Astronomy Domine and Lucifer Sam to the closing proto-shoe gaze blitz of One of These Days and bent musical hall wackiness of Point Me at the Sky, it was a set of such startling intensity it seemed to mock the very notion of nostalgia. • PINK FLOYD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS - the Endless River, Release Date 10 November
2014-09-22 16:05 CEST PINK FLOYD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS - The Endless River, release date 10 november. Details about The Endless River, the new Pink Floyd album from David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason, were revealed today as the album artwork appeared on buildings in ten international cities, including an eight metre lit installation on London’s South Bank. The album will be released on Parlophone on 10 November and is produced by David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson. David Gilmour said: “The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.” Nick Mason said: “The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.” The Endless River is mainly an instrumental album across ‘four sides’ with one song, ‘Louder Than Words’ with new lyrics by Polly Samson.

Introduction usician, psychedelic explorer, eccentric, cult icon – Roger “Syd” Barrett was many things to many people. Created in conjunction with the Barrett family and The Estate of Roger Barrett, who have provided unprece- dented access to family photographs, artworks, and mem- Mories, Barrett offers an intimate portrait of the Syd known only to his family and closest friends. Previously unseen photographs taken on seaside holidays and other family occasions show us a happy and loving young man, smiling energetically in images that map his early life, from childhood through his teenage years. Along with newly available photos from the album cover shoots for The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (taken by Storm Thorgerson and Mick Rock) they reveal the positive energy of a grinning Syd as he fools about in front of the camera. We are offered a rare glimpse of one who was immensely popular among friends and contemporaries. Also contained within these pages are recently unearthed images of Pink Floyd in which we see Syd practising handstands, making muscle-man poses, and having fun. The other members of Floyd lark about too – a fledgling young band enjoying itself with a sense of real camaraderie. The images transport one back in time to 166–67: the London Free School gigs, the launch of International Times at the Roundhouse, the UFO club, the band’s first European dates. There are photos of Syd and Floyd at numerous locations and events, giving a real sense of what it must have been like to be there as the infant light shows, experimentation, and collective spirit of the time emerged, grew, and flourished in the psychedelic hothouse that was the late 160s.

Iconic Figures of Popular Music: Pink Floyd Spring 2019 Course no. MUSC 424 Section no. 47229R Units: 2 Time: Wednesdays 10:00-11:50am Room: KDC 241 Course instructor: Bill Biersach Instructor’s office: MUS 316 Instructor’s office hours: MW 9 – 9:30 am, 12 – 1 pm Office phone: (213) 740-7416 Instructor’s email: [email protected] The Premise From schoolyard friends to superstars to squabbling artists to fading stars, we will follow the course of these intense musicians through the intriguing twists and turns of their rise to fame and their eventual demise as a group and, unfortunately, as friends. Along the way, one of their founding members bailed due to mental problems—yet his unintended influence on the band remained eerily active. In their use of complex recording techniques and newly-invented electronic instruments, they were decades ahead of their time. The amazing visuals, both projected and animatronic, became an integral part of their stage presentation. Their albums were more than collections of musical tracks, and their concerts became more than mere performances of their music. Everything they did was larger than life, but the vicissitudes of life eventually tore the band apart. Course Goal In this course we will examine the career arc of this band from several perspectives. We will read the autobiography of a band member, Nick Mason, but also review the story from an outsider’s perspective, journalist Mark Blake. The class will also divide into small groups who will review and present the musical material, album by album, according to guidelines of their choosing.
