2014-09-22 16:05 CEST PINK FLOYD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS - The Endless River, release date 10 november. Details about The Endless River, the new Pink Floyd album from David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason, were revealed today as the album artwork appeared on buildings in ten international cities, including an eight metre lit installation on London’s South Bank. The album will be released on Parlophone on 10 November and is produced by David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson. David Gilmour said: “The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.” Nick Mason said: “The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.” The Endless River is mainly an instrumental album across ‘four sides’ with one song, ‘Louder Than Words’ with new lyrics by Polly Samson. The concept for the powerful imagery of a man rowing on a ‘river’ of clouds was created by Ahmed Emad Eldin, an 18-year-old Egyptian digital artist. Ahmed’s image was then re-created by Stylorouge, award-winning UK design agency. In London, The Endless River artwork is displayed on an eight metre high, illuminated cube installation on the South Bank. Pink Floyd’s album artwork, mostly created by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, is as legendary as the band’s music. With Storm’s passing in 2013, the task of finding an image that carried on Storm’s legacy passed to Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, Storm’s original partner in Hipgnosis. Po said: ‘When we saw Ahmed’s image it had an instant Floydian resonance. It’s enigmatic and open to interpretation, and is the cover that works so well for The Endless River.” The Endless River is released in these four formats. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. Engineer Alan Parsons and Mixing Supervisor Chris Thomas, who had worked extensively with The Beatles (the LP was mastered by engineer Wally Traugott), introduced a level of sonic beauty and clarity to the album that propelled the music off of any sound system to become an all- encompassing, immersive experience. Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

Brit Floyd Comes to The Vets Okee dokee folks… Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour turned 74 years old a couple of days ago, and Roger Waters is 76 as is Nick Mason. Founding members Richard Wright and Syd Barrett have passed away. The band has not played together in many, many years and for all intents and purposes Pink Floyd is no more. Their music, however, lives on. More than 250 million Pink Floyd albums have been sold worldwide. David Gilmour doesn’t tour very often. Roger Waters performed at the Newport Folk Festival a couple of years ago and will be in Boston this coming July. While he surely will perform Floyd cuts you probably won’t get to hear some of the deep cuts or many of the songs that you would like to. One cure for this lack of Pink is Brit Floyd, “The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show” from England. They will be bringing their Echoes 2020 production to Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, March 10. I spoke with Brit Floyd guitarist Damian Darlington via phone about the band and their upcoming show at Vets. Brit Floyd just returned from a mini tour of Japan so I asked what other countries that they have performed in. He informed me that they have performed “in just about every country in Europe” as well as Lebanon, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, and “all sorts of places!” Being in a tribute band myself, I was curious as to how he wound up part of this Floyd Tribute. As he put it, “A chance opportunity that came my way” landed Damian in another Pink Floyd tribute starting back in ’94 and lasted for 17 years.

STORM THORGERSON Storm Thorgerson was the man behind some of the most iconic im- ages in the history of Rock and Roll. He was the genius sleeve design- er behind the weird and wonderful images of Led Zeppelin, Gene- sis, Ian Dury and the Mars Volta. He is best known for his crucial role in creating Pink Floyd’s progressive aesthetic. Storm Thorgerson was an English artist, graphic designer, film maker and tennis fiend. He was born in Potters Bar, Middlesex on 28 February 1944. Whilst at the Royal College of Art in London, Thorgerson shared a flat in South Kensington with his friend Aubrey Powell. It soon became a swinging sixties hub for a variety of artistic and musical characters. Together Aubrey and Thorgerson formed Hipgnosis, the preemi- nent and most visionary album art design firm in the world. Hipgno- sis’ client list included Genesis, Yes, 10cc, Bad Company and Paul McCartney and Wings. In 1987, following the dissolution of Hipgno- sis, Thorgerson formed his own design studio called Storm Studios. He went into video directing and made TV documentaries, includ- ing “The Art of Tripping” (1993), which investigated the effect of drugs on creativity, and a science documentary called “Rubber Uni- verse” (1994). He designed album artwork for more recent artists such as the Cranberries, Anthrax, Audioslave and Biffy Clyro and continued to work on Pink Floyd projects. In March 1973 one of the most successful albums of all time was released: Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”.The artwork for the album, which was designed by Storm Thorgerson, has become as famous and iconic as the music.
