BOAT of GARTEN Mark Parsinen, This Is Sure to Feature High 1 on Future Top 100 Course Listings GREAT WEEKENDER lthough both soda and water A mix well with whisky, it’s just possible that golf goes better than either of them with Scotland’s favourite export. Courses and distilleries are fairly well scattered throughout the country but there is a happy blend of both up in the north-east of Scotland in an area known as Speyside. The Spey, the fastest-flowing river in HigIt takes a bit of getting to,H but the Northland of Scotland is an absolutely swingstunning area blessed with amazing golf courses Scotland, hurtles down from the Cairngorms, through spectacular scenery by kevIn brown before entering the Moray Firth. Along the way it passes the highest BEST OF BRITISH concentration of distilleries in Scotland and flows close to a few of the finest golf courses in the world. As if that’s not enough, the Spey is also one of the greatest fishing rivers in the world. Nearly 10,000 salmon and about half as many sea trout are caught by rod and line on the Spey every year. And so a round of golf in the morning followed by a spot of fishing in the afternoon and a dram or two in the evening is the dream Speyside scenario. The golf is also pretty special. Much of the headlines are taken by Royal Dornoch – understandably. This is a true giant of the game, a course up there with St Andrews in terms of a course you have to play before you die. It’s gorse-lined, rumpled fairways and super-slick, sloping greens are an awesome challenge which visitors from all over the world are utterly charmed by. Just behind Dornoch in terms of star status is Nairn, host of the 1999 Walker Cup and a course blessed with arguably the finest greens in Britain. Also well worth a mention in this regard is the new kid on the block, Castle Stuart. • Hopeman, Moray
Hopeman, Moray Area profile One of Moray’s seaside villages, Hopeman, originally called Newtown of Hopeman”, was established in 1805 to house and re-employ people displaced during the Highland Clearances. Founded by William Young of Inverurie as a fishing port, the village expanded to export stone from nearby quarries after the building of a new harbour in 1838. By 1850 some 70 fishing boats operated from the harbour and by 1890 there were 120. With the demise of local fishing, today the harbour is now a marina housing mainly pleasure boats. © Crown Copyright 2016 Corporate Policy Unit The Moray Council August 2016 1 /38 Table of Contents 1 Population Structure ..................................................................................... 4 1.1 Age profile ............................................................................................................. 4 1.2 Marital Status ........................................................................................................ 6 2 Identity ............................................................................................................ 7 2.1 Ethnicity ................................................................................................................ 7 2.2 Country of Birth ..................................................................................................... 8 2.3 Religion ................................................................................................................. 9 2.4 Length of residency for residents born
