Created in 1989 by Russell Morash, the program was hosted by Norm Abram, a regular fixture on Morash's television series This Old House. Overview New Yankee Workshop presented the construction of woodworking projects, including workshop accessories, architectural details and furniture projects ranging from simple pieces to complex, high quality reproductions of antique classic furniture. Over the course of 21 seasons, about 235 projects were carried out. In addition to furniture and cabinets, the show also focused on outdoor projects, such as building a gazebo, shed, greenhouse, sailboat, flag pole, mailbox, dome, and fences. He also goes to different places that are related to woodworking. The theme song The New Yankee Workshop theme song consists of a fast-paced guitar song with a harmonica sound. Set Design The store where the show was produced is owned by Morash and is located on its property, even though the viewer had the impression that it was in Avram's backyard. The store has an area of 936 square meters. [1] The barn's famous sliding door faces west. Along the west wall is the back seat and the drilling press. Along the south wall is the miter bank and the storage unit, the radial arm seen, and (not seen in episodes) a computer, a TELEVISION, and a small office area. The eastern wall of the store has a staircase that leads to an attic area, storage jig, horizontal edge grinding, and dust collector. The north wall houses of sheet goods, router table, bar clamps, Timesaver sander wide belt, glider, joiner, saw tape, and various mobile tools. The central area of the store consists of the table saw and associated outfeed tables, as well as a large assembly table. In the northeast section of the building is a separate finishing room. Cancellation On October 16, 2009, WGBH Boston announced that no more episodes of the New Yankee Workshop would be produced. [2] Noting at the end of the show, Abram said: We had a great race, built challenging projects, met wonderful wood workers and received loyal support from millions of viewers. Abram later claimed that the entire duration of the show was fully funded by subscription and could have continued, but decided that he had accomplished everything he wanted to do and wanted to spend more time with his family. [3] Episodes continue to be available on The New Yankee Workshop. Season 1 (1989) Closing credits for the first eight seasons of The New Yankee Workshop consisted of an exterior photograph of the workshop with a sign in it, so we see Norm Abram closing the workshop door, and preparing to go home and have dinner with his family. In the first episodes of this season, with the workshop door already open, a dog is seen running away while Norm puts his tools away. However, in-person training was the only option for learning a trade. This meant attending a class or series of classes where the human senses played a major role in gaining understanding. Chefs learned to use their noses to determine freshness; mechanics learned to use their eyes and sense of touch when making repairs; carpenters and cabinet makers learned to use their eyes, noses, and sense of touch when working with wood. Now that the Internet is so pervasive in our lives, it has become the go-to place for any kind of information, instruction, and entertainment. While it is convenient and is a good place to start, in my opinion, it is causing us to lose the skills and attention to detail that allow you to be called a Master Craftsman or Master Tradesman. The Internet has indeed had a significant impact on education in general. You can now earn certificates, diplomas, degrees, and certifications via the Internet in just about any field. Having been raised in the era of going to brick-and-mortar institutions this author views the Internet a little differently: as a research tool, not as a learning tool. In college I earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

    The “A’s” (Source: NET microfiche, unless listed) Aaron Copland Meets the Soviet Composers (1959) Initial Broadcast: N/A Number of programs: 1 Origin Format: Undetermined Running time: 30 minutes AARON COPLAND MEETS THE SOVIET COMPOSERS is a half-hour studio production kinescope of an interview between Copland and six Soviet musicians, musicologists and/or composers who were travelling in the US. My impression is that this was a visit in return for one made to the USSR by an American group earlier that included Menned (?), Sessions, Harris and Kay (?). The setting for the interview is a recreated concert hall stage with the guests sitting in players’ chairs and Copland and his translator located where a solo instrumentalist would be seated. The questions appear to have been scripted in advance – and scripts placed on the music stands. The responses from the Soviets appear to have been ad lib. Copland’s questions were translated into Russian by an American (?) of Russian origins, Nicholas Slonimsky, himself a musician. The Soviets spoke in Russian and were heard through simultaneous translation. The translator was unseen and uncredited. The Soviet guests include (in order of answering questions): Dmitri Kabalevsky, Boris Yarustovsky, Tikhon Khrennikov, Dmitri Shostakovich, Konstantin Dankevich and Fikret Amirov. Kabalevsky was asked about the knowledge of American music in the USSR; Yarustovsky on the influence of American music on Russian music; Khrennikov on the reactions of Soviet musicians to the visit of four American musicians earlier (in the exchange program?); Shostakovich on American jaZZ and its influence; Dankevich on younger Soviet composers and Amirov on the adaption of native musical types to series music.
