Perhaps the most widely recognized word in the industrialized world in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. For some people, hearing that word reminds them of a worldwide phenomenon that they love. For others, it engenders a feeling of extreme dislike. But regardless of how people feel about it, one thing is for certain, almost everybody has heard about it. What is Pokémon? It’s hard to say. It’s a phenomenon. It’s a card game, a stuffed toy line, a fruit snack, a collector’s card set, a monthly comic book, a candy, a role-playing game, a bunch of plastic figures, a collection of posters on the wall, a cartoon, and a newspaper comic strip. It’s also the best thing to ever happen and the worst thing to ever happen, a way to educate children and a distraction in schools, and a demonic game for heathens and a game blessed by the Pope. Pokémon is many things, but at its heart, it’s just a good, solid video game. The basic premise of Pokémon (as delineated in the video games for Nintendo’s Game Boy: Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Gold) is that the world is full of Pokémon (note that Pokémon is both the singular and plural form), or “Pocket Monsters,” that each has special skills. The world is also full of Pokémon trainers that go around capturing and then training the Pokémon for various reasons: ranging anywhere from personal gain to love of Pokémon.

    “Pokémon Go”: Psyduck VS Psycho Players Warnings for Retired School Personnel by Judy Hart, Information and Protective Services Chairman The new rage in gaming is “Pokémon Go.” It hit the streets on July 6, 2016, and has made a huge splash with young and old alike charting 21 million daily active users within two weeks. Parents are raving about it because it means that their children are no longer sitting with their faces glued to a cellphone screen. Instead, they are up walking all over the cities and country sides, and truth be told, some of them came home from their first gaming adventure with sore legs, having walked eight miles or more. So why do we need to post about this instantaneously addictive game that requires our grandkids and even us more adventurous retirees to be walking? First, let us understand the premise behind the game. The players need to capture all kinds of Pokémons with pokéballs. During the course of the game, the players earn candies, gymnasiums, and other fantastic awards that can be spent wastefully, recaptured from competitive other players or simply lost in the play of the game. Pokémon is a fictional creature concocted from the words pocket monsters. They have enticing names like the first characters the player is likely to meet named Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle. Paul Tassi (Forbes) recommends that players ignore these first Pokémons, even though they will chase after players, longing to be captured. When they finally give up, the more desirable pocket monster Pikachu arrives just in time for the ball chucker to earn pocket candy.

    The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies Volume I – Issue I – Winter 2014 “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!” Pokémon, Cultural Practice and Object Networks Jason Bainbridge, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia Abstract The Pokémon franchise is over seventeen years old, a networked assemblage of heterogeneous elements (manga, gaming, toys, anime) that is also constitutive of new knowledges around both consumerism and commodification. This paper explores how all of the elements of this franchise, from the brand, to the various media platforms, to the Pokémon trainers, to the pocket monsters themselves (the non-human objects) as well as the designers and the consumers (the humans) function as objects in the construction of a social network. In so doing it seeks to understand not only how the franchise functions but also how the objects in this franchise (particularly the non- human Pokémon creatures and trainers) work in tandem to connect audiences to very specifically Japanese ideas of the “national imagination” (folklore, spiritualism, the supernatural) and environmental concerns (biodiversity, the struggle between conservation and containment) through the larger consumerist framework of acquisition and play structured as cultural practice. In this way, it is argued, that the Pokémon object network functions as a gateway into Japanese culture more broadly and a channel through which Japanese culture is itself mainstreamed internationally. Warm-up time begins at the time that is listed and the game will follow. -Please arrive at least 25 minutes early on the first game to meet your coach and receive your reversible. -Each team will have approx. 10-15 minutes of warm-up time and will then play a game that consists of 2 halves that are 20 minutes long. Running clock and each team has 1 timeout/game. All other NFHS rules apply. -Please be patient on the first day of the leagues as we work through roster sizes and other minor issues. Most or all teams will have a goalie, but it is possible that your team may not. If this is the case, we will have a temporary goalie that week and a permanent goalie the following week. -If roster sizes are a little unbalanced the 1st week, this will be adjusted by the 2nd week. -We have an “odd #” of teams in the Varsity division.
