COO-EE JUNE 2020 www.edithburgh.org.au This story of an awful disaster and then the land making its recovery was submitted by Dianne Griffiths. We’ve just come home from a lovely day on the farm at Honiton belonging to Mark Hewton, listening to his memories of that dreadful day of fire. Marie and Malcolm Stanton wanted to record Mark’s experience for the Museum and our history group wished to film Mark’s story, so we combined today practicing social distancing and we washed our hands! Thank you Dianne. We all need a little uplifting news about now. These photos above could easily be viewed as works of art. They are in a way, created by the ferocious heat of fire, on Thurs 21st Nov 2019. Mark Hewton’s fourth generation owned farm was in the path as the fire changed direction and headed towards Edithburgh that morning. In 1948 a similar fire, the last major blaze, had narrowly missed the lovely old farmhouse, and they counted their blessings. Not this time! Mark lost a great deal that day, but looking out across his paddocks, tinged with green after the recent good rain, he realizes the most precious of all lost possessions is still there, ready to grow the crops again...the land. Coobowie-Edithburgh Community Published by Edithburgh & Coobowie Progress Committees email: [email protected] Mission to Seafarers – Port Giles/Edithburgh Some information about some work we have been doing with the ships. Since COVID 19 the Mission to Seafarers has been closed and we have not been able to go on any ships visiting Port Giles. That has meant that we are not able to take any seafarers ashore for some R&R. Seafarers are not allowed to go ashore in any ports around the world. They are like being in a floating prison with little contact with their families and loved ones. They are often not allowed to return home even if their contracts have finished. There are many seafarers around the world who have been abandoned on board their ships and are not permitted to go ashore. As a result we decided to pack some care packages to provide some essentials and a few luxuries for the crews who are in continual isolation for some months. Some wonderful people from various places have supplied us with beautifully knitted or crocheted rugs, beanies, mittens and neck warmers as well as draw string bags which we’ve filled with toiletries such as toothpaste and brushes, shampoo and deodorants. We’ve also packed chips, chocolates, books, moisturisers and a few souvenirs. We bought a variety of postcards on which people from the church and mission wrote messages of encouragement. Because we have been prohibited from having close contact with the crews the bags have been placed at the end of the gangplank and are then collected by the seafarers. The latest ship, the MV Tomini Felicity, had an Indian crew and the men were very happy to receive our gifts. The day after delivering the goods I had a request to do some shopping for the men, so after a shopping list was sent to me I was able to purchase the required goods to again deliver to the gangplank. The MV Tomini Felicity is taking 49,000 tons of barley from Port Giles to China. Front of card Take heart. This card was received by Beth and John Braund recently from their just turned (she had a birthday recently) 5 year old granddaughter who like us all is feeling the social isolation due to covid19. Elsie used left-over Easter bits to decorate the front and wrote the message herself. It reads “Dear Nanna and Grandpa can we come and see you the first day coronavirus stops love Elsie xxxxxx” A beautiful small note that says it all. Have a Laugh!!!! Peter Bartram found this Striated Pardalote at his place. Deb Weekley with her Mum Trish and dog Harry sitting in the Contemplation Garden in the Flora Park. Maxwell Johnson found this Sea Dragon at the boat ramp, took a quick picture and put it back. The Annual Volunteer Morning Tea Like many events this year, this one has been cancelled. However the Progress Association would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our local volunteers. All volunteering is valued, from the crucial life saving services of the ambos and fireys, right through to the caring neighbour who checks in regularly to see that medications are being taken. Some volunteers are motivated by their passions, for example sport, art, history, flora, fauna and of course religion. And most volunteers are aware of how good helping others makes you feel. But what volunteering really does is create a community, a whole lot of people working for the common good, creating the sort of place that we all want to live in. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS Mark O’Callaghan has written regarding a hall mirror. Mark who has a house at 3 O’Halloran Parade, Edithburgh put his partner Kay’s loved Hall Mirror stand out as a give-away when he was redecorating. Unfortunately it has been picked up and Mark would like to get it back if at all possible. He is willing to pay and would be very grateful. There is no photo of the stand but Mark has provide an outline sketch (left). If you can help, Mark can be contacted on 0422 589 622. Museum Report for June 2020, by Keryn Dawes. Hello to everyone from the Museum Committee. We are certainly going through unchartered waters. The Museum has been closed for the last 3 months – this has never happened before in the history of the Museum! However things are about to change – slowly but surely. All depends on us fulfilling COVID-19 regulations as stipulated by the SA Government. We believe that after our proposed AGM meeting on Tuesday July 21st we will be able to open again – with certain restrictions. We hope to establish our rosters again and to have Kath Drury, our resident desk manager, return. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new radiator for the Buick – again, a big thank you, to the Yorke Peninsula Council for the grant of $1180 and also to other kind donations made into the “donation tin”. The history group is preparing more signage for restored buildings and sites within the town and interviews may continue soon. We are still discussing options to replace “Day at the Burgh” walks and tours Math Teacher: "If I have 5 bottles in one hand and 6 in the other hand, what do I have?" Student: "A drinking problem." Requirements: • Do NOT enter if you are feeling unwell • Use hand sanitiser at the desk near front door • Only 10 people to use the library at one time • Observe the 1.5m distancing rule and floor markings • Visit times may be limited to 30 minutes if there are large numbers of people waiting • Returned items will be quarantined and not available for reloan for 5 days These restrictions are in place to keep our school and community safe and healthy. We will keep you notified of further changes as they occur here and on the Yorketown Community Library Facebook page. All 5 library depots are now open in their usual hours. These depots are situated in Edithburgh, Stansbury, Corny Point, Warooka and Marion Bay and are open on various days and times. Ring us if you would like more information. Please phone the library on 8852 1647 if you have any queries. Brain teaser Flora Park News Flora Park Volunteers have recently become the proud owners of a fire fighting/watering unit for use in the park and other areas within our town. Our thanks to the Progress Association for the pump unit, Tilbrooks' Deli for the trailer and Peter Goodwin at the Garage for odd bits and pieces. Recent good rains have brought the park to its season peak and there are the beginnings of many winter blossoms. It has also provided opportunity for new plantings of Casuarinas and Eramophila. Of recent times the number of visitors to the park has increased and there has been much positive feed back.
