[Music is playing at the beginning of the tape: bagpipes.) S: Colonel Buchanan, I understand you are of Scottish descent and also a third generation Texan. Now that's quite a combination. Would you mind telling us a little bit about that? B: Yes, I'll be happy to, Jim. My great-grandfather, James Buchanan of Alabama, came with Stephen F. Austin's fifth colony, 1835, to what became Washington-on-the-Brazos. He was a farmer and built a log cabin down in Montgomery County. And he then was drafted into the Texas Army with General Sam Houston; and was subsequently killed in the Battle of the Alamo. And you will find his name, James Buchanan, of Alabama, on the north wall of the Alamo. His widow was given a grant of l a nd in 1844 by the Republic of Texas; and the grant was signed by Presiden t Sam Houston. My father was born on this grant of land, below Caldwe ll, in 1862, the son of James Houston Buchanan, BUCHANAN 2 B: the grandson of James Buchanan. So, therefore, we have roots that go back into early Texas history. Many of the Stephen F. Austin's colonists, as you see this was the fifth colony, were Scottish that carne across from the Ea st Coast. Another important colony which should be mentioned is the Sterling C.

Thanks to all the members who helped out at our tent. The threatening weather turned out not so threatening after all, thank goodness! We were glad to see several additions to our membership during this time—welcome to all new members! We also want to welcome our new president, Alice Graham—it’s great to get “new blood” into the leadership for 2020, and we look forward to a great Society year! There will be a planning meeting Friday, November 6, 6:00, at Rare Olde Times, 10602 Patterson Ave, Henrico VA 23228. You are very welcome to come to the meeting and add your voice in planning our events for the coming year, as well as have a bite to eat.     New Arms for MacTavish. The most intriguing heraldic event of the winter was not the Lord Lyon’s straight re-grant 1 to MacTavish of Dunardry of the arms of the Chief of MacTavish, but rather the widespread comment in magazines and on websites it created. One suspects this must have been fed by a press release ~ in which case, looking at the errors in just one example (see the linked attachment), typical of the others, there can be little doubt about its author. Can it be anyone other than the Chief himself ? Look at this ~ “Under the MacTavish motto Non Oblitus - Do Not Forget Me After Death - the shield in the centre of the arms had the Campbell colours of black and gold in the first and third - the predominant - quarters .......” Disregard the motto for the moment and don’t worry about “the shield in the centre of the arms” ~ consider the “first and third” predominant quarters (sic). The author appears to believe that quarters are numbered clock- wise. Accordingly, our artist has prepared the picture above right, and if Dunardry just runs his mouse across it slowly, the correct numbering of the quarters will then appear on little balloons. This should help him avoid such an embarrassing error in future. The reference to “the shield in the centre of the arms” is odd. The arms are quite clearly on the shield, not the reverse. And the motto Non Oblitus means “Not forgetful” ~ it can mean nothing else, so it clearly answers in the implied “I am not forgetful” the Ne obliviscaris (Do not forget) of the Campbell Chiefs.

It does not say that ALL Thom(p)sons are of Clan MacTavish; as that would be a totally false assumption. Providing a reference footnote was the most expedient method to correct a long-held belief that MacTavish was a sept of Campbell, without reformatting the pages in this section.

Patron, Euan Maclachlan of Maclachlan, Chief of Clan Lachlan President's Message Greetings Clan Members, Hope this finds you & yours well in these tumultuous epidemic times. It is astonishing how quickly “work at home” and “social distancing” have become part of our lives. On-line sales and delivery are booming. On-Line Learning is becoming standard for institutions from schools to universities. Zoom and other APPS are making world-wide meetings in person a reality. I have some comments on the Society in this epidemic world. Notice there is no reference to branch membership. The society can run with no reference to Branches whose main advantage is organizing meetings which require a physical presence, say a clan tent at a gathering. Fund raising is through the Lachlan Trust of Scotland and Lachlan Trust of Canada. Major funding sources have been Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Fund-raising by Clan members is important as these bodies require evidence of public participation and support from “ancestral” tourists. (Note that Tax relief is only available for Donors who pay UK taxes) Clan Lachlan Association of Canada 80% of membership fees are made as donations to the Lachlan Trust of Canada and receive a Tax Credit if you pay Canadian Tax. You only receive a tax credit for expenditures directly incurred for work on the Old Castle Lachlan site. We will compute the amounts involved and issue cumulative tax credits in 2021.

    The Poltalloch Writs by Patricia Adams Commentary following by Patrick Thompson, Seannachie From 1999-2003, I was the Clan Genealogist for Clan MacTavish. I did not work with individuals on their family heritage, but rather on the heritage of Clan MacTavish and the Chiefly line, looking for anything that could be found recorded. I thought it might be interesting for you to be able to read some of the research that was done during that time. Notice the different spellings of MacTavish and Dunardry over the years. Remember that in the 1500s through the 1700s and later, the common man was not necessarily literate. Some had to make their mark “X”. Also – many names were spelt as they sounded, not using specific spelling as we do today. Notes for King of Connacht Eochaidh Muighmheadhoin: Copyright: Patricia Adams, July 1, 2000, USA Please keep in mind that the pedigree of Clan MacTavish reaching this far back in history is in ancient times. There are no existing birth records, death records, etc., with the exception of the ancient annals and chronicles. There were no computers, no CDs, no microfilm, etc. Not everyone could read and write. The name of the same person was many times spelled differently by different scribes. We have to depend on the Annals of the Four Master, Annals of Ulster, Annals of Tigernach, and these records often time disagree on the year of the event. Later published materials may have picked up on incorrect information, or may have found newer documentation. Clans may very well have changed pedigrees over the years, sometimes because they learned of factual information and sometimes because they simply took advantage to change the line of a Chief to what they felt was a loftier claim. (The Clan Campbell, for example, changed their published Chief's line between 1975 and 1992.) I take this opportunity to caution you when reading history or pedigrees based on ancient documents or documents 1700, which may be written in another language (such as Latin) and call for translations. The line of any chief of a Clan (just as our personal family research) becomes speculation and opinion as you go back before the year 1000. Some of us in our own personal family research may not even be searchable before the year 1700.
