Batman: Dark Victory. Batman: Dark Victory Review. Does the follow-up to The Long Halloween fall flat on its ? Batman: Dark Victory is a far better book when its predecessor, The Long Halloweenis fresh in the mind. Alone or at least distanced from Batman: Dark Victory Halloween the sequel appears like a slightly less-effective continuation of the original. In some ways, it feels much more like your standard Batman tale, simply for the fact that many of the players seem to have fallen easily into familiar roles. When considered as the second half of a two-volume set fitting with Two-Face as the central characterwriter Jeph Loeb's brilliance shines through. There is hardly any in this book, because Bruce Wayne is slipping away and Batman is taking over. This is Batman: Dark Victory truly noticeable with Long Halloween recently read, because the contrast in the two books is quite stark. Harvey Dent goes away and so does Bruce Wayne. Each man is split in two, but Batman: Dark Victory masked side is far more dominant. The believed identity of the holiday killer from the first book never sat well with Batman and so when a new spree of holiday-theme murders begin, the Dark Knight suddenly has two cases to solve. First Batman: Dark Victory must figure out who is killing police officers connected with Harvey Dent and why and then attempt to uncover the true identity of Holiday or at least confirm the original findings. It's possible both killers are one in the same, but increasingly unlikely and with Batman's Rogues Gallery out in full force, the Bat has his hands full once again. The effects of Harvey's transformation have never really seemed personal in the Batman books before. This time they are. In fact, it's almost as if Batman has Batman: Dark Victory a brother to go along with his fallen parents. Batman: Dark Victory defiant loner who needs no one's help is born here Batman: Dark Victory the reasoning goes much deeper than just an oath sworn on his parents' grave. Dark Victory is not quite as good as The Long Halloweenbut it would be almost impossible to accomplish such a feat. It's too heavily dependant on the original to stand on its own. But it's hard to think of a follow-up in comics equal to this. It's not just that the sequel is good, but it uses the events of the original to further explore the psychological makeup of the Dark Knight. While Dark Batman: Dark Victory doesn't add Batman: Dark Victory new light to the original something it tries to doit does add new context to the Batman we all know and love. If you hated Long Halloweenthere's nothing here for you, but if you loved the original, then this follow-up is a Batman: Dark Victory. Was this article informative? YES NO. In This Article. Meanwhile, on the periphery of the case, Holiday is out on bail and something is brewing in the Gotham Underworld. To be honest, it felt like a retread of The Long Halloween for a while. Not bad but not really anything new. However, once the Batman: Dark Victory wrinkle of some shady shit going down at the Haly Circus surfaced, I was all in. I've had a lot of favorite comic characters in the past four decades but was the first. While I normally don't like retellings of characters origins, I enjoyed Loeb and Sale's take on Robin's origin quite a bit and it fit seamlessly with the rest of the day. The conflicted relationship between Harvey Dent and his former friends drove the rest of the book very well. I complain quite a bit about decompression in today's comics but it works great when Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale use it to tell a slow-burning mystery like The Batman: Dark Victory Halloween or Dark Victory. Just like the Long Halloween, the clues were in place but I missed them. Tim Batman: Dark Victory cartoony, moody art did a great job setting Batman: Dark Victory tone, although I don't care for his Joker or Scarecrow. Loeb and Sale do a great Batman, too, complete with Conroy voice in my head. Four out of five Batarangs. Aaand with this the long Halloween sequel comes to an end! View 2 comments. Apr 23, Mizuki rated it it was amazing Shelves: greatwish-i-could-write-like-thiscomic. Rating: countless-god-damn-Batman-stars. I have so much love for this glorious volume and its prequel, Batman: The Long Halloween. Each of us lost pieces of our lives A world that exists only in darkness? I can tell. You go all rigid when I'm around. Right now. Take off the masks. No Secret. Your Loss. The plot and the murder mystery is more neatly and more skillfully written than The Long Halloween view spoiler [ too many Holiday Killers in one book! It literally is one of the best American comics I've ever read. Though I must admit as much Batman: Dark Victory I like this volume, I still can see how the story borrowed so heavily from the Hollywood crime-noir e. PS: I believe it was during the reading progress of this book, I'd Batman: Dark Victory for the first time when I saw Batman had a freaking dinosaur in his cave! So, okay then. This is the sequel to The Long Halloween which I was not the biggest fan of to begin with. Still, on the enjoyment scale, this one was better. That was Batman: Dark Victory I got to the last two issues. Ironically enough, while The Long Halloween had a rough start but a nonetheless merciful albeit incomplete resolution, Dark Victory managed to get a stronger and more concise beginning but a more frustrating and pointless ending. I don't understand this travesty. The Knightfall series Batman: Dark Victory honestly So, okay then. The Knightfall series is honestly more better written. Well, Loeb's stories should be fundamentally incomparable to Knightfall since Batman: Dark Victory latter after all was written by multiple writers across different Bat-titles. The sole reason I compare them is becauase I was also quite Batman: Dark Victory towards Knightfall but I would pick the omnibus series over either of Loeb's work any day. I don't want to get into details about Dark Victory. Ultimately it's a Batman story that brought no joy or appreciation for me. I thought I could like any kind of Bat-story out there I eventually did warm up to Greg Hurwitz in his Batman: Dark Victory for New 52 The Dark Knight run but Jeph Loeb had officially made me question that reality. I can state from here on out that I don't enjoy the way he writes Batman. There were a few areas that have potentials, most notably for Dark Victory. The central murder mystery story had a better foundation; a series of cop kilings with the murderer pinning notes on the corpses depicting the child's game Hangman as secret messages. At least the victims were sympathetic people and not criminals who are a tad more irredeemable. But the holiday-themed murders were needlessly overplayed like the torture horror of the SAW franchise. Batman spent most of the time blaming himself in his inner monologues about Dent's transformation to Two Face. This would have been acceptable except that I never really saw a friendship developed in the prequel among these three to make the drama and internal conflict believable enough for me to care about. And then there's the women. Every woman is given the roles among grieving spouses, easily manipulated girlfriends and whimsical seductresses-- and with Batman: Dark Victory to no clarification for motivation or pay-off to their arcs whatsoever. After escaping the estate, Sofia and Alberto meet inside the Batman: Dark Victory mausoleum; Batman: Dark Victory smothers him, telling him he is not a real Falcone. At the Batcave, Dick correctly translates the clues left Batman: Dark Victory that they refer to protecting the Falcone crime family, and Batman scrambles to leave. Her final ploy was to pretend to be paraplegic, leaving her as the last suspect. During the ensuing fight, Sofia is shot by Two-Face and Batman gives chase. Dick intervenes, now wearing a uniform as "Robin", and he assists Batman in the recapture of the criminals. Joker shoots Two-Face, and he falls presumably to his death. In the introduction to the trade paperback, Tim Sale states that he was hesitant to join with Jeph Loeb on the project as he did not care for Robin, given his stark contrast to Sale's interpretation of Batman. Loeb, however, insisted that the teaming of the two characters was essential to the story. A major theme of the story concerns how the three protagonists of The Long Halloween now feel alone. Throughout the book Batman struggles with this, his refusal to accept help from Commissioner Gordonas well as with his fear of being wrong, a side-effect of the Scarecrow Batman: Dark Victory fear gas. Catwoman even slaps Batman when he shows no interest in what might happen to Two-Face. Dick Grayson is depicted in the story as Batman: Dark Victory of Bruce Wayne's only anchors left to humanity. Hilary Goldstein of IGN Comics said that " Dark Victory is not quite as good as The Long Halloween " and added that "it's too heavily dependent on the original to stand on its own", but praised how Dark Victory "uses the events of The Long Halloween " to further explore the Batman: Dark Victory makeup of the Dark Knight" and "add[s] new Batman: Dark Victory to the Batman we all know and love. Dave of Comics Bulletin said that Dark Victory "doesn't quite live up to the high standards set by The Long Halloween " but praised "Loeb's note-perfect understanding of what makes the Batman tick" and added that "Tim Sale's artwork also keeps on hitting new highs.
