The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content. -
“Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

JOKER an origin written by Todd Phillips & Scott Silver 1 DECEMBER 2018 FINAL SHOOTING SCRIPT ii This story takes place in its own universe. It has no connection to any of the DC films that have come before it. We see it as a classic Warner Bros. movie. Gritty, intimate and oddly funny, the characters live in the real world and the stakes are personal. Although it is never mentioned in the film, this story takes place in the past. Let's call it 1981. It's a troubled time. The crime rate in Gotham is at record highs. A garbage strike has crippled the city for the past six weeks. And the divide between the "haves" and the "have- nots" is palpable. Dreams are beyond reach, slipping into delusions. TP/SS OVER BLACK: HEAR LAUGHTER. The sound of a man totally cracking up. FADE IN: INT. DEPT. OF HEALTH, OFFICE - MORNING CLOSE ON ARTHUR (30's), tears in his eyes from laughing so hard. He's trying to get it under control. His greasy, black hair hanging down over his forehead. He's wearing an old, faded green cardigan sweater, a threadbare gray scarf, thin from years of use, hangs loosely around his neck. He's sitting across from an overworked SOCIAL WORKER (50's), African American. Her office is cramped and run-down in a cramped and run-down building. Stacks of folders piled high in front of her. She just sits behind her desk, waiting for his laughing fit to end, she's been through this before. -

!New York Times: “Should Batman kill the Joker?” By Mark D. White and Robert Arp Published: Friday, July 25, 2008 ! Batman should kill the Joker. How many of us would agree with that? Quite a few, we'd wager. Even Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight" marvels at Batman's refusal to kill him. After all, the Joker is a murderous psychopath, and Batman could save countless innocent lives by ending his miserable existence once and for all. Of course, there are plenty of masked loonies ready to take the Joker's place, but none of them has ever shown the same twisted devotion to chaos and tragedy as the Clown Prince of Crime. But if we say that Batman should kill the Joker, doesn't that imply that we should torture terrorism suspects if there's a chance of getting information that could save innocent lives? Of course, terrorism is all too present in the real world, and Batman only exists in the comics and movies. So maybe we're just too detached from the Dark Knight and the problems of Gotham City, so we can say "go ahead, kill him." But, if anything, that detachment implies that there's more at stake in the real world - so why aren't we tougher on actual terrorists than we are on the make-believe Joker? Pop culture, such as the Batman comics and movies, provides an opportunity to think philosophically about issues and topics that parallel the real world. For instance, thinking about why Batman has never killed the Joker may help us reflect on our issues with terrorism and torture, specifically their ethics. -

The Joker: A Psychoanalytic Review Bennett Roth Ph.D. By focusing on the “villain” the controversial film of the Joker is a radical departure from the usual super-hero genre. Its reception was mixed winning an Oscar for its leading actor and receiving a mixed or negative press. Unlike many other films derived from comic books this film maintains its comic book style and logic. Comic book style and characters have influenced other entertainment media from “The Hulk” to Road Runner. Comic books have a unique history. The Glasgow Looking Glass, first published in 1825, is believed to be the first mass-produced “comic strip” focusing on current news and affairs in Glasgow, Scotland. A century later the term “superhero” was first used in 1917 in the “Golden Age of Comic Books” during the 1930s. It is acknowledged that the current Modern Age of comics occurred following the lifting of censorship, allowing comparatively darker and more complex characters to emerge with an increase in the popularity of comics and the commercialization of the industry. Along with the new popularity there has been a rush into moviemaking following the success of these simple action movies with moral lessons within them. It is possible that larger than life male superheroes are integral to American society and the development of boys. Change in many superhero comics since 1938 reflect contemporary crises also assisting in the popularity and renown of comics, superheroes and their translation into movies. World War II prompted Marvel’s to include Hitler and Japanese soldiers, atomic energy, and with the coming of The War on Terror following September 11, Captain America faced current issues of government surveillance or US foreign policy. -

The Joker (Heath Ledger) "You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And I won't kill you, because you're just too much fun. I think you and I are The Joker destined to do this forever." ―The Joker to Batman In The Dark Knight, the Joker is depicted as a maniacal criminal mastermind who terrorizes Gotham City and whose goal is to plunge it into anarchy. The Joker has been described as a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy." He was portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, in the role that won him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The Dark Knight Hospital Scene: Take 2 TW04J06 Atkin Michael James A0210468J Gaurav Peter Mathai A0192380E Tan Yi En Lisette A0172671A Introduction: In the original scene from The Dark Knight, the Joker convinces Gotham’s mayor, Harvey Dent, that plans and schemes--or any attempts to control the world--are all futile. Chaos is better than order, because order can never be achieved. Unable to defend his position, Harvey eventually backs down and turns into the villain known as Two Face, who leaves his evil deeds up to mere chance, i.e. coin flips. In our version of the scene, the Joker will turn Harvey into a villain by convincing him that he isn't morally responsible for his actions. This draws upon the contrast between The Naive Theory and Strawson’s Basic Argument. Scene opens with The Joker, dressed as a nurse, in a hospital room. Harvey Dent is recovering in the bed. The Joker takes off his surgical mask and reveals himself. Harvey Dent: (shakes with fiery rage, but remains tied to his bed, unable to move) ARRGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!! The Joker: (smirks; in a patronising tone) Hello, Harvey. The Joker: (as he ruffles his hair) You know, I don't want there to be any hard feelings between us. When you and, uh... Harvey Dent : ...RACHEL!! The Joker: (innocently) Rachel, were being abducted, I was sitting in jail. Harvey: (with burning hatred) Your men, your plan. The Joker: Look, Harvey. I organized the plan, and I chose to carry it out. That’s all true. But look a little deeper. -

STORY CIRCLE WORKBOOK Awesome Descriptive Title…. 1. “YOU” This is the undisturbed status quo of the protagonist. This leads to the “Point of Attack.” E.g. In The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne dresses up in a special suit, calls himself Batman, and brings the pain to Gotham's bad guys. 2. “NEED” This is the “Creation of the story.” This leads to “Defining The Main Tension” E.g. Bruce Wayne is getting a little old for this… He’s eyeing retiring “Batman” so he can be with the love of his life, Rachel. But who will protect Gotham? Maybe… Harvey Dent? 3. “GO” Elaborate on why accomplishing the goal will be difficult. E.g. To put his plan in motion, Batman must help Harvey Dent by bringing the criminal, Lao, to justice. 4. “SEARCH” First attempt to resolve the main tension, the road of trials. This leads to the midpoint, “FIND.” This refines the main tension, narrows its scope, and makes it more specific. E.g. Just when Bruce thinks he can celebrate his retirement, The Joker takes the stage and unleashes a new wave of crime upon Gotham. 5. “FIND” This is when your protagonist finds what they think they need, but it doesn’t work out quite the way they expected. Your protagonist must pay a devastating price for attaining what they sought. E.g. This is when the protagonist FINDS what they were looking for. Bruce finds how to stop the Joker and save Gotham: unmask himself. But Harvey does it first… 6. “TAKE” Full frontal assault on main tension.
