Year of Seeking and Healing through and Kindness Blessed Carlo Acutis - by Theresa Sundstrom

For the first time in history, a teenager dressed in jeans, sneakers and a hoody is one step closer to Sainthood. After an approved mira- cle, the tomb of Carlo Acutis was opened on October 2, 2020 and his body was found to be intact – incorruptible! He was then Beati- fied this past October 10, 2020.

Blessed Carlo was an ordinary Italian Roman Catholic teenager, living in the same 21st century world as our own children. He had a Play Station, enjoyed making silly videos of dogs, and played soccer. Carlo practiced the virtue of moderation by making a rule for himself to only play an hour of video games a week. Sounds like a great goal for my own children!

He died at the age of 18 in 2006. Months before he died of leukemia, he documented Eucharistic miracles around the world onto a website that he created. He wanted people to understand the real presence of in the Eucharist and called the Eucharist, “My Highway to Heaven.” After receiving his First Holy Communion, he never missed a day of Mass and helped his mother grow in her relationship with Christ.

On this Feast of All Saints, may we remember that Jesus calls us all to Sainthood. Carlo reminds us that it is attainable, even for ordi- nary followers of Christ. Blessed Carlo, pray for us.

Faith Formation Information by Linda Hansmeier

“But God did hear and listened to my voice in prayer.” Psalm 66:19

Last year staff and faith formation students were challenged by Fr. Andy to learn the Memorare and the . The Memorare is a Roman Catholic prayer seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This prayer reminds us that the Blessed Virgin Mary is ready to help us when needed if we approach her with love, true contrition for our sins, and a sincere desire to do God’s will. Do you recognize the picture to the left? It is a famous painting about a famous prayer: The Angelus! In this 19th century work by the French painter Jean-Francois Millet, a farming couple prays the Angelus at dusk. This prayer is well suited to the artist’s subject matter: two humble people paying homage to our Lord and His Blessed Mother in the , as well as in the Gospel verses recalling His Incarnation as the Word entered the World. Although the Angelus has been tra- ditionally said three times daily, at 6 am, noon, and 6 pm, you can pray it anytime. We invite you to learn both of these so that soon we can begin praying the Memorare or the Angelus during Mass as a community. Both prayers fol- low: The Memorare: REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy pro- tection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Vir- gin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The Angelus: V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary, etc. V. And the Word was made Flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, etc. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

LET US PRAY Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
