Marian Activities for the Month of May Marian Activities for the Month of May It is a Catholic tradition to celebrate May as the Month of Mary. Our Blessed Mother Mary received special grace from God, accepted her special role in Jesus’ life and in Salvation history as the Mother of God, and was given to us by Jesus as our Blessed Mother. She continues to inspire us by her perfect example of virtue and discipleship and to prayerfully intercede for our needs. As Our Lord honored His mother, so do we. During this month, let us learn more about Our Lady and engage in prayerful devotions and fun activities to honor her. Below are information and links for Marian activities for your family during the month of May. Included are Scripture passages related to Our Blessed Mother Mary, Titles of Our Lady, Apparitions of Our Lady, Marian prayers, crafts, activities, recipes, and reflections. These items are sectioned into five themes to tie the activities together each week. There are enough activities to do one each day or you are welcome to mix whichever activities your family would enjoy most into your weeks as you’d like. Please share pictures of your May Crowning celebrations and Month of Mary activities with our Holy Name family by emailing them to [email protected] and [email protected]. Theme: May Crowning May 1st - May 3rd - As Catholics, we honor our Blessed Mother Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth (Mother of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). We crown our Our Lady with a crown of flowers which reminds us of her role as queen, of the new life she brings, of her spiritual beauty, and of her virtuous purity. We crown a statue of our Blessed Mother Mary as a sign of the honor we give to Our Lady in Heaven. Although our school community is unable to come together to crown Our Lady as we usually do at a school liturgy each year, we can join together in prayer and by crowning statues of our Blessed Mother Mary in our own homes. - Scripture: Revelation 12:1-2 - Title: Our Lady Queen of Heaven and Earth - Apparition: Our Lady of Guadalupe - Compare her image to the description in the Revelation 12:1-2 Scripture passage. Look up information about the amazing story of the miraculous creation of this image with such fantastic symbolism and detail (accurate star constellations on her mantle from the time of its creation, the tiny reflection of Saint Juan Diego in her eyes, etc.) as well as the miracle of the simple material that the image is on lasting without deteriorating after almost 500 years. - Prayer: Hail Mary or Rosary (ourcatholicprayers.com) - Craft: Handmade Flower Crown for our Blessed Mother Mary (catholicinspired.com) - Activity: May Crowning and Celebration, Home May Altar Ideas (catholicicing.com) - Recipe: Rice Krispie Flower Crown (catholiccuisine.com); Edible Rosaries (linked by catholicicing.com) Theme: The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary and The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth May 4th - May 10th (Mother’s Day - We remember our mothers and our Blessed Mother Mary who both love us so much.) - Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 (Annunciation); Luke 1:39-56 (Visitation and Magnificat) - Title: The Blessed Virgin Mary - Apparition: Our Lady of Lourdes, the Immaculate Conception, Spouse of the Holy Spirit (France) - Look up information about this apparition and specifically how Our Lady told Saint Bernadette that her name was Immaculate Conception which theologically indicates her espousal to the Holy Spirit which connects to what was told to her in the Annunciation recorded in the Luke 1:26-28 Scripture passage. - Prayer: Magnificat (ewtn.com) This prayer comes from the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary herself recorded in the Luke 1:46-56 Scripture passage. - Craft: Flower Frame (consider making one with a picture of our Blessed Mother Mary and one with a picture of you with your Mom) - Activity: Start a Mary Garden (catholicicing.com) - Recipe: Lily Sandwiches (cream cheese with veggies) or Lily Sandwiches (peanut butter or other butter with banana) (catholiccuisine.blogspot.com) - Reflection: God revealed His plan for the Blessed Virgin Mary and invited her to accept that role and bring Jesus into the world. How do we experience Jesus’ Presence in our life? What has God revealed to us about our role in His plan for the Salvation of souls (forgiveness, growth in holiness, unity with God, etc.)? How do we accept God’s grace and receive the Holy Spirit into our lives to help us as disciples as our Blessed Mother Mary did in her life? Theme: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus May 11th - May 17th (including the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th) - Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 - Title: Mary, Mother of God - Apparition: Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal) - Celebrate the Marian feast day on May 13th. Look up information about the message of Our Lady to Saints Jacinta and Francisco Marto and Sister Lucia dos Santos when they were children as well as the amazing Miracle of the Sun. Saints Jacinta and Francisco were souls of great devotion and died as children from the 1918 influenza epidemic. Let us pray to Our Lady and Saints Jacinta and Francisco for healing of those suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic and for consolation to those who have lost loved ones due to illness during this time. - Prayer: Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Litany of Loreto), Fatima Prayer (ewtn.com) - Craft: Spinning Sun Pinwheel (Our Lady of Fatima Miracle of the Sun), Our Lady of Fatima Minibook (drawn2bcreative.com) - Recipe: Blueberry Muffins for Our Lady (catholiccuisine.blogspot.com) - Reflection: Jesus was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary and entered into the world simply. What are simple ways that we see Jesus present in our lives? Our Blessed Mother Mary cared for Jesus. What are ways that we can care for Jesus and for God’s people like she did and continues to do? Our Blessed Mother Mary and Jesus are perfect examples of humility. What are ways we can grow in the virtue of humility? Theme: The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus May 18th - May 24th - Scripture: Luke 2:22-40 - Title: Our Lady of Sorrows - Apparition: Our Lady of Kibeho (Rwanda) - Look up information about the messages that Our Lady gave to children in Rwanda which often encouraged prayer and increased faith. - Prayer: Our Lady of Sorrows Rosary (sjdivinemercy.org); Consecration to Jesus through Mary (school.hnchurch.org) - Craft: The Presentation of Our Lord Puppets (catholicinspired.com) - Activity: Hail Mary Prayer Ordering (Cut the strips, mix, and order.); Mysteries of the Holy Rosary Ordering - Recipe: Blue Mary Cookies (catholicicing.com) - Reflection: Our Blessed Mother Mary and Saint Joseph presented Jesus (their greatest gift from God) to God and gave Him the offering of a pair of birds. How do we offer our gifts/talents to God through spiritual practices and serving God and others? Jesus’ parents were obedient to the Mosaic law of their time. What are some ways we can grow in the virtue of obedience? Theme: The Miracle at the Wedding at Cana May 25th - May 31st (including the Feast of the Visitation on May 31st) - Scripture: John 2:1-11 - Title: Our Lady Mediatrix of All Graces - Apparition: Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (France) - Look up information about Our Lady appearing to Saint Catherine of Laboure, revealing the Miraculous Medal to her, and requesting that the Miraculous Medal be made. Look at the Miraculous Medal (Medal of the Immaculate Conception, Medal of Our Lady of Graces) and the rays light signifying graces that are depicted coming from Our Lady connecting to her title as Mediatrix of All Graces. Many miracles and great conversions of faith have been attributed to the Miraculous Medal. - Prayer: Memorare (ewtn.com); “Jesus, I Trust in You” (The Image of Divine Mercy, sjdivinemercy.org) - Craft: Foil Miraculous Medal (catholicicing.com) - Activity: Sidewalk chalking with encouraging faith-filled messages - Recipe: Morning Star Sandwiches (turkey and cheese open face sandwiches) (catholiccuisine.blogspot.com) - Reflection: Our Blessed Mother Mary was attentive to the needs of others and went to Jesus to ask Him for help. Who do we know who needs something? How are we helping them or how can we help them in the future? Keep in mind your class’s outreach organization too. Our Blessed Mother Mary trusted Jesus to help and guided others to trust Jesus and do what He asked of them. Let’s trust Jesus and act on this trust through our prayer for our needs and for the needs of others. Think also about those who are suffering from the Coronavirus and those working to help them. Remember the powerful prayer intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary who brings our prayer intentions to Jesus. How can we encourage others to trust Jesus too? .

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The First Sorrowful Mystery The Agony in the Garden Prayer Intention: For all who are suffering from abandonment or neglect, that compassionate individuals will come forward to offer them comfort and aid. Jesus comes with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane and prays to be delivered from his Passion, but most of all, to do the Father's will. Let us pray that Christ might hear the prayers of all who suffer from the culture of death, and that he might deliver them from the hands of their persecutors. Our Father... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: hear the cries of innocent children taken from their mothers' wombs and pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: soothe the aching hearts of those afraid to welcome their child. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: guide the heart of the frightened unwed mother who turns to you. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: move the hearts of legislators to defend life from conception to natural death. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: be with us when pain causes us to forget the inherent value of all human life. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: pray for the children who have forgotten their elderly parents.

  • R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines
R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines This year in the Religious Education Program we are re-instituting Prayer Requirements for each grade level. Please review the prayers required to be memorized, recited from text, \understood, or experienced for the grade that you are teaching (see p. 1) Each week, please take some class time to work on these prayers so that the R.E. students are able not only to recite the prayers but also to understand what they are saying and/or reading. The Student Sheet (p. 2) will need to be copied for each of your students, the student’s name placed on the sheet, and grid completed for each of the prayers they are expected to know, or understand, or recite from text, or experience. You may wish to assign the Assistant Catechist or High School Assistant to work, individually, with the students in order to assess their progress. We will be communicating these prayer requirements to the parents of your students, and later in the year, each student will take their sheet home for their parents to review their progress. We appreciate your assistance in teaching our youth to know their prayers and to pray often to Jesus… to adore God, to thank God, to ask God’s pardon, to ask God’s help in all things, to pray for all people. Remind your students that God always hears our prayers, but He does not always give us what we ask for because we do not always know what is best for others or ourselves. “Prayer is the desire and attempt to communicate with God.” Remember, no prayer is left unanswered! • Praying with Mary
PRAYING WITH MARY MY PRAYER I Started Praying with Mary and This is What Happened by SARAH MCMAHON For a long time, I faked having a relationship with Mary. Even after I had a relationship with God, and leadership roles at my parish I just didn’t give it much thought. I didn’t even know how to correctly say the rosary until I did summer missions in college. So many women in my life told me about their incredible devotion to Our Lady and I just didn’t get it. I thought maybe Mary picked favorites. That some people could have a relationship with her, and some people just didn’t make the cut. I figured I would just keep praying the same way I always had and if Mary wanted to pick me, she would. I did the consecration to Jesus through Mary for the first time my sophomore year of college. Even then, nothing really seemed to click for me. I posted a photo at the end of it that made me look super cool and Marian grace filled but in reality, I didn’t feel like anything had changed. My roommate had an incredible relationship with Mary and that added to the mystery surrounding Our Blessed Mother for me. I wanted the relationship my roommate had but had no idea how to get there. After many rosaries, consecrations, and discussions, it ended up just being the Holy Spirit that led me to Mary. Go figure. I was in the chapel after a particularly frustrating few months in my relationship with the Lord.

  • 2018 May – June
the Chalice Volume 47 May – June 2018 Issue No. 3 “One must meditate on the Passion of Jesus, and on the deep sorrows of His Mother. One must recite the Rosary every day, and also the Rosary of the Seven PRESIDENT’S Sorrows of Mary, to obtain the favor of repentance.” In his decree on the apparitions COLUMN issued on June 29th, 2001, Bishop Augustin Misago By Bruce G. of Gikongoro, Rwanda, in part states: “It was the visionary Marie Claire Mukangango who brought it back again as she received the mission to teach the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows by the Blessed Virgin Unity of Hearts Devotion Mary of Kibeho. After an intensive research the ad “You must contemplate the Heart of My Mother, as hoc commissions have still not found any evidence you contemplate My own; live in that Heart as you that Marie Claire knew this rosary before the wish to live in Mine; give yourself to that Heart as you beginning of the apparitions. This rosary deserves to give yourself to Mine; spread the love of Her Heart be renewed and spread in the Church. However, this which is wholly united to Mine.” – Jesus, to Venerable prayer does not replace the Holy Rosary. It is one Bertha Petit, Franciscan Tertiary and Belgian mystic, among many exercises of piety admitted in the February 7, 1910 Church.” Known under the title of Our Lady of Kibeho, this apparition has worldwide approval of Dear Calix Family, the Church. In the last edition of The Chalice, I wrote about meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries while praying The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows recalls the sorrows the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and how this prayer and the Virgin Mother of God endured during Her life, meditation is an effective means of coming to know particularly Her compassion for the suffering and the burning love Jesus has for us in His Heart.
