Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE WA Class Championship (November 25-27) The Washington Chess Federation holds two major open tournaments each year: the Washington Open takes place on the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, while the Washington Class Championship was just held at its traditional time, the American Thanksgiving weekend. As usual a number of B.C. players chose to participate, including Tanraj Sohal, the Doknjas brothers (John, Joshua, and Neil), Paul Leblanc, Brian Sullivan, and Doug Sly. It should be noted that although Tanraj has often played in Washington State, most of those events were rated under the Northwest Scholastic Rating System rather than the USCF, so his current USCF rating does not reflect the master class playing strength he has achieved; at the Class Championship he played in the Master Section, despite having a pre-tournament USCF rating of 1552. The overall winner was Dereque Kelley with an undefeated 4.5/6 score, while all the other results can be found via the USCF crosstables . Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE 33rd Andorra Open (July 18-26) Another B.C. player in Europe this summer is Max Gedajlovic, who is currently competing in the Andorra Open, held in the Pyrenean village of Erts. Leading the 160-player field are GMs Julio Granda Zuniga, Andrey and Yuri Vovk, Vladislav Tkachiev, and Artur Kogan with 4.5/5; Max has 3.0 points from the yo-yo effect (losses against an IM and GM, wins against class A and B players). Standings Quebec Open (July 17-25) In this millenium the Quebec Open has merged with the Canadian Open three times (2002, 2008, 2014). This year the Quebec Open has merged again, this time with the Championnats individuels d'échecs de la Francophonie (Individual chess championships of French-speaking countries – although entrants don’t need to be able to speak French). After six rounds two of the nine GMs participating are tied for first, Samy Shoker (Egypt) and Romain Edouard (France), closely followed by Canada’s Eric Hansen. The field includes five players from this province, Jason Cao, Ethan and Kevin Low, Kai Richardson, and Doug Sly, although it appears that Jason has withdrawn after five rounds having scored 3.0 points – whether this is from illness or a result of his punishing recent tournament schedule is not known.

Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE Maurice Ashley/Amy Lee Visit (August 10) In Bulletin #288 we reported on the Millionaire Chess Open in Las Vegas and mentioned the two main personalities behind the event, grandmaster Maurice Ashley and Vancouver-based entrepreneur Amy Lee. Both visited Vancouver recently and a friendly evening of socializing and blitz chess was organized by Ashley/Sophia Tapp and Maxim Doroshenko at the Vancouver Chess School. A good time was had by all. Report Bowser Builders Supply Tournament (August 9) Now in its seventh year, this annual event in the community of Bowser on Vancouver Island is organized by the Bishops of Bowser chess club and sponsored by Bowser Builders Supply, who this year provided for the purchase of two premium wood chess sets from Chess Bazaar in India. Topping the ten-player field was current B.C. Champion Jason Cao, who incidentally also played in the first Bowser tournament seven years ago. Roger Patterson and Nick Peters tied for second, while the women’s prize went to Lucette Fuerst. Tournament website Westbank Peterson Active (August 9) A recent residential development in Vancouver’s West End is The Lauren at 1051 Broughton Street. The complex includes three outdoor chess tables, and to promote their use an active chess tournament was organized by chess2inspire, sponsored by two of The Lauren’s companies, Westbank and Peterson.

Stephen Wright HERE AND THERE Canadian Championship and Zonal (April 18-22) Last December the CFC Directors approved a bid from Aris Marghetis to hold the next four Canadian Championships in Kingston, Ontario, and the first of these events has just taken place over the Easter weekend. Held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in part through contacts made at the CSTA (Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance) Conference in Halifax in March 2018, the Championship served as the centrepiece for a chess festival, with additional sections for those rated below 2200. 2019 is also a Zonal year, meaning there were qualification spots for the World Cup and American Continental Championship plus the chance to obtain direct titles. Round one, Joshua Doknjas versus Evgeny Bareev (photo by Victoria Jung-Doknjas) Thirty-six players participated in the Championship Section, including GMs Evgeny Bareev, Kaiqi Yang, and Aman Hambleton, WGM Qiyu Zhou, and former champions IM Nikolay Noritsyn and IM Artiom Samsonkin. There were two players from BC, Joshua Doknjas and Kevin Gentes, the former receiving financial support from the BCCF due to his high finish in the last BC Closed. Evgeny Bareev was the obvious favourite, but the former world number four (2003) suffered the tournament's biggest upset in the very first round at the hands of – Joshua Doknjas! It was Nikolay Noritsyn who made the most of the early going and after six rounds was in clear first with 5.5 points, having defeated Yang and Samsonkin.
