This year's WYCC was held in Maribor, Slovenia, and the number of participants increased to a whopping 1,584, nearly 500 more than last year, and several hundred more than the previous two European events in Porto Carras, Greece (2010) and Antalya, Turkey (2009). 92 different countries were represented, and 8,712 games were played - I'll only be providing you with a handful, no worries! I'm also pleased to see that Ashley Tapp, 12, of Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia, and Vancouver was able to make her way to Maribor with shares the impressive title of 2012 European Capital of the team despite the financial burden.

A few years later Bu easily won in the Chinese junior championship and went on to achieve success in the international arena: he won 3rd place in the U12 World Youth Championship in 1997 and 1st place in the U14 World Youth Championship in 1998. In 1999 he achieved three GM norms within only two months, which made him the youngest grandmaster at the time, at the age of 13 years 10 months and 13 days, a record that was only broken two years later by GM Sergey Karjakin . In 2000, Bu defeated the Azerbaijani chess talent Teimour Radjabov by 6½-1½ in an eight-game Future World Champions Match organized by Garry Kasparov and was considered a super talent for future world champion contender. In 2004, Bu became the chess champion of China.

À quoi penses‐tu dans l'avion du retour ? Je pensais aux très bons moments passés avec la délégation française (l'ambiance était très bonne), au cadre exceptionnel (la Patagonie c'est quand même plus sympa que la plupart des endroits dans lesquels on va habituellement, notamment la Sibérie) et bien évidemment au titre obtenu à l'arraché (au départage grâce à une victoire lors de la dernière partie), le tout dans des conditions éprouvantes. Au final, une expérience forte et unique. À Puerto Madryn, ton séjour a été assez "chaotique" mais avec le recul quel souvenir conserves‐tu de ce championnat forcément très particulier pour toi ? Ce serait plutôt le non-souvenir des pingouins que je ne suis pas allé voir pendant la journée de repos. On dira que j'ai été trop sérieux sur le coup mais je dois avouer que pour l'excursion il fallait se lever à l'heure où je suis allé me coucher ! Par la suite tu enchaînes avec une belle Coupe du Monde à Khanty‐Mansiysk en Russie. Tu es éliminé par Boris Gelfand, futur vainqueur de l'épreuve. On a le sentiment que tu avais les moyens de le sortir. Peux‐tu nous raconter ce match ? Évidemment cette Coupe du Monde m'a laissé un peu sur ma faim, puisque j'ai été éliminé en 1/8e de finale alors que j'étais venu avec des ambitions plus élevées.

This 11-round Swiss by age group (under 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18, in both boys and girls categories) has attracted 1122 players from around the world, including twenty-eight participants from Canada. Of these twenty-eight, eight are from B.C.: Fanhao Meng and Lucas Davies (U18B), Tiffany Tang (U16G), Noam Davies and Vlad Gaciu (U14B), Chelsea Ruiter (U12G), and Alexandra Botez and Erika Ruiter (U10G). Good luck to all! Results, currently for the first three rounds, are available through the offical sites, or www.chess.bc.ca or pages.infinit.net/archamse/WYCC2005.htm. The official website (www.belfort-echecs.com) was overwhelmed for a few days, but is currently up and running; an alternative is www.echecs.asso.fr/(0uiuf4binynjxpidzpz1f455)/Default.aspx, the website of the French Chess Federation. The organizers are providing games from the top twenty boards or so of each section, usually late on the same day as the round in question.
