Bill Front Cover It was a wet and windy day when I selected this photo for the front cover, so perhaps the weather influenced my choice. This beautiful winter scene of the wet moors was taken by Peter Churches. News Parish Council Business The first meeting of the New Year was well attended. Cllr David Huxtable, Somerset County Councillor, was in attendance and listened to several complaints from Councillors concerning the ongoing road works in the Wookey area, resulting in a lengthy closure of the Wells Road, resulting in delays and disruption to workers and the 67 bus users. He offered to take up the matter with Bristol Water, the main contractor and other Councillors to see if any alterations to the plan could be made. As I write there have been some amendments to the original planned closure which could see some improvement over the coming weeks. Some residents of Glanville Road expressed concerns that the recently laid yellow lines had been incorrectly placed. This would be passed to the Highways Engineer for further consideration. Members awarded a grant of £1000 to Wedmore Scouts towards the refurbishment of the kitchen at the Wedmore Scout Hut. This money together with another grant from Sedgemoor would enable the much-needed project to proceed. Annual Parish Assembly The Annual Parish Assembly takes place in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday 25 March at 7.30 pm. There is still time to nominate someone or some group to win the Henry Butt Trophy. A decision will be made at the Parish Council meeting on 18 March. Dog Mess Several complaints have been received about the amount of dog mess around the village, particularly around the Memorial Garden in The Borough. These have been forwarded to the Sedgemoor Dog Warden for attention. Rod Pring, Wedmore Parish Council, Grant’s Lane, Wedmore Somerset BS284EA Telephone 713087, email: [email protected] Report from District Councillors Polly attended the Grants Award Sub-Committee. There were four applications totalling £7200, amongst which £2000 was awarded to Wedmore Scout Group to help with the refurbishment of the kitchen. Will was one of three Councillors to sit on a panel to decide who was to take up the position of Assistant Director for Inward Growth and Development, he also attended the Axe Brue Drainage Board Finance committee and Audit and Standards Committee at SDC. Polly chaired two Licensing Panels, the first was Hackney Private Hire driver’s renewals (several drivers had failed to undertake mandatory safeguarding training, and it was our duty to determine whether they were fit and proper to hold their license). Two were surrendered and nine will have been revoked on 31 January unless they attended another safeguarding session that was on 30 January. The second panel was an exempt report and therefore the details cannot be shared. Will and Polly both attended their PC planning meetings and general PC meeting and Polly chaired a PC Highways committee meeting. She also went to the WPAA (Wedmore Play Area Association) and the Adapting the Levels Environmental meeting, which was focussing on Tealham and Tadham moors and she is hoping that a lot more of the Young Farmers attend this really interesting group as it is of great importance to the next generation. Polly spoke against the Strongvox application, especially as it went against everything that the Neighbourhood Plan stands for, but sadly again the planners at SDC seemed to be on the side of the developers. As a result she has asked the chairman of Community Scrutiny at SDC to fully scrutinise why NPs are ignored when so much time and money go into them. Polly organised an open evening at the Parish rooms with the housing association, Livewest, for the Cross Farm development, so locals wanting to find out more about the housing on offer could talk to the staff from Livewest.

END OF YEAR REPORT 2016-17 1 SOMERSET RIVERS AUTHORITY END OF YEAR REPORT 2016-17: CONTENTS 1. Introduction (page 2) 2. Performance Delivery: Summary (page 3), Delivery Status: By Funding Source (page 4) Finance: Summary (pages 4 to 5) 3. Progress of Works in Detail Key Projects (pages 6 to 10) SRA 2016-17 Enhanced Programme (pages 11 to 21) INTRODUCTION In 2016-17, Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) spent just over £6million on actions designed to give Somerset an extra level of flood protection. This end of year report explains where the money came from and how it was spent. It also gives information about projects that have been delayed or had their funding moved to other activities. These details have been provided because the SRA wants people to know what it has achieved across the county – and it wants to be properly accountable. The SRA raises extra money to deliver extra work. Schemes are prioritised for SRA funding on the basis of the main objectives in Somerset’s 20 Year Flood Action Plan, which was developed in response to the floods of winter 2013-14. This report is divided into two sections. Performance covers delivery overall and by funding source, plus a table summarising 2016-17 finance; Progress gives more details about major projects, and smaller actions grouped according to SRA workstream – Dredging & River Management, Land Management, Urban Water Management, Resilient Infrastructure and Building Community Resilience. Somerset’s approach is uniquely joined-up. This report details just one year of the SRA’s extra work. For much more information about earlier years, works in progress and works coming up, visit www.somersetriversauthority.org.uk A note on Somerset Rivers Authority: The SRA is a partnership between 11 of Somerset’s existing flood risk management authorities: Somerset County Council, the five district councils, the Axe Brue and Parrett Internal Drainage Boards, the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Wessex Regional Flood & Coastal Committee.

  • September 2018 No
ISLE OF WEDMORE NEWS September 2018 No. 465 Editorial After such a long scorching summer it seems strange that in Keats’ words, ‘the season of mellow mists and fruitfulness’ is suddenly upon us, welcome to the September Edition, number 465. I am sure many people will be glad of the changes the new season will bring, particularly as you will see from the Weather Report compiled by Denley Brown on page 36, that a shortfall of 65.6% was recorded between May and June of this year, when compared against the 30-year average rainfall figure. Hopefully things will balance themselves out and it’s probably a little early to be doing impressions of Private Fraser; ‘We’re doomed Cap’n.’ Please forgive me repeating myself here, but may I again make two appeals as I did in last month’s Editorial? Firstly, is there anyone with a range of recipes (just a few would do) who may wish to join the team of authors of the ‘Tasty Morsels – A Recipe for You’ feature. Secondly, for your kind sponsorship please for the ‘Beer Bucket’ Challengers as we put ourselves through public humiliation to assist so many worthy charities within the village. So what is there to do here in Wedmore during September? Glad you asked, well amongst many other things, there is the 75th Theale Flower Show, a Green Wedmore Freecycle Day, the 18th Wedmore Real Ale Festival, Somerset Arts Week with a venue Deadline for October Edition: 1 September 2018 Contact the Wedmore News Editorial Copy / Items for Publication Bill Sutton, Culverhays, 9 Combe Batch, Wedmore BS28 4DU (710475) Email [email protected] What’s On Listings and Contact Details for your Club / Organisation Liz Henderson, 12 Church Street, Wedmore.

His initials can be found in five places in the Church structure, the most easily spotted being in one of the bench ends in the nave aisle. Other repairs were carried out in later years, particularly after the damage caused by violent winds in November 1703 and the lightning strike in 1811. There is documentation available detailing much of these works from the Church Registers of the time. The Church’s involvement in the events surrounding the Battle of Sedgemoor, 6th July 1685, are also well documented elsewhere. By 1930 the Church had deteriorated into a poor state and a fund for “The Great Restoration” was opened. This work began in 1933 and was completed by the opening service on October 6th 1936.
