COVID-19 in Georgia.

Georgia is a country located at the crossroads of Western Asia and . Its approximate population is about 3.718 million. Georgia confirmed its first COVID-19 case on February 26. In order to tend off spread of the infection, government of Georgian introduced border restrictions. Health screening was carried out at airports and at the borders. Around 7,000 hotel rooms were used to quarantine citizens who returned home after the first week of March. On March 12, the government unveiled a set of urgent measures to combat the global pandemic. StopCov.ge (in English and Georgian) is government’s main repository for all updates and recommendations on the COVID-19 in Georgia.

As of June 5, Georgia has a total of 805 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 650 recoveries and 13 deaths, which is one of the best results in Europe. Georgia is opening its airspace to international flights starting July 1 and the international airports of the country are making preparations to receive tourists and to ensure that their services will be in line with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health of Georgia.

On May 30, 2020 The Washington Post writes: “Put aside the ancient vineyards, the ski resorts and Black Sea beaches. The country of Georgia has a new tourism pitch: a place to take a break from the pandemic. Georgia’s response to the novel coronavirus is a relative success story.”

GAACI board members are actively engaged in the work of an Interagency Coordination Council on COVID-19 led by Giorgi Gakharia, the Prime Minister of Georgia.

One of the GAACI founders and its board member Amiran Gamkrelidze is a Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC): the main public health institution of Georgia, supervising the surveillance of communicable/noncommunicable diseases, overseeing the functioning of state public health programs, environmental health and medical statistics issues, research projects, laboratory/Lugar Center activities. He is an internationally respected expert on infectious/noncommunicable diseases and a key advisor of Interagency Coordination Council on COVID-19.

“Although Georgia remains a certain oasis compared to the countries around us, we have no reason to calm down and we should not have the illusion that we have defeated the coronavirus. If we do not follow the recommendations of the State, we may have more explosions. There are enough beds in the country, we have enough trained medical staff and all this is manageable,” said Amiran Gamkrelidze. On April 2020, Memorandum of Cooperation to enhance partnership between the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health and UNICEF to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic was signed by Dr. Amiran Gamkrelidze, and the UNICEF Representative in Georgia Dr. Ghassan Khalil.

GAACI board member Professor Nunu Mitskevichi is a Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia. As a responsible person in the field of higher education in Georgia, she actively participated in the development of an anti-crisis plan aimed at appropriate changes at different levels of education in order to better counter the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nunu Mitskevichi participated in a video conference on research and innovation organized by the European Commission and attended by the Ministers of Education and Science of the 16 countries associated with the EU Horizon Framework Research and Innovation program, Deputy Ministers, representatives of scientific foundations and various research institutions.

The main goal of the conference was to strengthen cooperation between European countries in the field of research and innovation and to overcome the crisis caused by the COVID-19. Participants shared their experiences for the disease prevention, diagnosis, and numerous ways for providing treatment.

Nunu Mitskevichi, held an online news conference with scientists and representatives of the medical field regarding COVID-19 and informed them about the 2nd special competition announced within the framework of Horizon 2020 program. She stated that the European Commission has mobilized financial resources, which will be directly used to study the ways to overcome the pandemic through scientific research and innovative solutions. According to the Deputy Minister, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, will act as the coordinator of the Horizon 2020 program, and will continue to contribute to the participation of Georgian representatives in the above-mentioned unique competitions.

GAACI members social activities during the COVID 19 pandemic. The GAACI members regularly participate in different social programs (Georgian TV shows, on- line conferences and others) for rising awareness about corona virus among the population of Georgia. The Vice-President of GAACI Professor Maia Gotua is the Director of the Center of Allergy & Immunology. She actively uses the social media to inform citizens of Georgia regarding the impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus) on people living with allergic disease.

All the GAACI board members are very active in providing information to the population of Georgia and giving guidance on prevention strategies of the COVID-19.

The member of GAACI, a young Doctor Bidzina Kulumbegov is very active in social media: he often participates in various television programs and at the same time hosts the popular television show on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GAACI board member Maia Rukhadze, MD. PhD is actively involved in various activities: worked on the COVID-19 recommendations elaborated by the GINA and GOLD, participated in translation and distribution of the latest recommendations provided by the World Allergy Organization, AAACI and EAACI COVID19 center in through social networks; Participated in a survey: Allergic situation&COVID19; Participated in various TV interviews to answer questions regarding COVID-19.

The members of GAACI organize and participate in different projects on fighting against the COVID 19 in Georgia. A young Doctor Elene Khurtsidze is a co-organizer and trainer for the USAID funded project providing trainings for medical professionals to reduce the risk and prevent transmission of the COVID-in the regional clinics and hospitals of the Western Georgia. She actively participated in different Georgian TV shows for rising awareness on corona virus among population of Georgia.

Professor Darejan Khachapuridze is involved in Association “Peaceful and Business Caucasus” project, which aims to train medical professionals from Abkhazia (occupied region) regarding clinical aspects on Covid-19.

Doctor Maia Rukhadze provided online training for allergists, GPs and pediatricians on the Latest Asthma Management Recommendations and the COVID-19 recommendations elaborated by the GINA.

2020 International Day of Immunology in Georgia. April 29, 2020 - The International day of Immunology was dedicated to increase the awareness of the importance of immunology in the fight against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The former president of GAACI, IUIS council member Professor Tinatin Chikovani delivered on- line public lecture “What we know about the COVID-19”, dedicated to the International Day of Immunology. On the same day via TV program she informed the audience about importance of immunology research in fighting against infectious diseases, autoimmunity and cancer. Her speech was focused on cytokine storm that have a central role in the COVID-19 pathology with devastating consequences for the host.

Publications on COVID 19. Manana Chikhladze, the Secretary General of GAACI, member of the WAO Board of Directors, is a co-author of article on acute asthma management during the COVID 19 pandemic published in the World Allergy Organization Journal.

Professor Giorgi Kamkamidze’ s research group studied knowledge of novel corona virus among a Georgian population.
