    Oyster farms are the main spawning grounds of the black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii in Hiroshima Bay, Japan Kentaro Kawai, Hiroki Fujita, Gustavo Sanchez and Tetsuya Umino Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life, Hiroshima University, Higashi Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan ABSTRACT Understanding the anthropogenic impact of oyster farms is essential for the management and conservation of marine fishes. In Japan, Hiroshima Bay is the region with the most intense oyster farming and thus suitable to study the impact of these farms. Here, we surveyed spherical planktonic eggs of the black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii, one of the most abundant fish in the Bay. Our survey was performed at fourteen stations which included places with oyster farms and historical spawning grounds. We found the highest egg densities in four stations, one with historical spawning aggregations and three with major oyster farms. Besides, surveys at the innermost part of Hiroshima Bay, where two major rivers discharge, showed a low density of eggs indicating that black sea bream avoids spawning in low salinity areas. Our study suggests that oyster farms benefit spawners of black sea bream by providing more food sources than historical spawning grounds for efficient spawning. Yet, whether oyster farms represent a full advantage for the species remains unclear, particularly because they are known to host jellyfishes that prey on eggs and limit water flow that can influence the survival of fish eggs. Corresponding author: [email protected] Manuscript received August 2010; accepted December 2010 Abstract Lake Clifton hosts the largest living, non-marine thrombolite (microbialite) reef in the southern hemisphere. The thrombolite reef was recently listed as a critically endangered ecological community. The main threat to the ecology of the lake is increasing salinity, but other threats have also been identified, including the impact of the introduced fish Acanthopagrus butcheri (Munro, 1949). Samples opportunistically collected after a fish kill in 2007 indicated that A. butcheri in this lake experienced very low somatic growth and recruitment failure between 1995 and 2007, probably in response to hypersalinity. The evidence suggests that the A. butcheri population in Lake Clifton is effectively extinct. The proposed conservation strategy for Lake Clifton addresses a range of identified threats, including the eradication of A. butcheri. However, management action in response to this particular threat may no longer be required. The abundance of A. butcheri in the lake is probably very low and the population is likely to become extinct if current environmental trends continue. A dramatic reduction in growth rate after 1995 demonstrates the extraordinary growth plasticity of A. butcheri in response to environmental influences. Estuarine dependent fish fauna must cope with such variability and typically exhibit a range of life history adaptations in conjunction with migratory capabilities, to make use of a range of habitats throughout their life time. Their utilisation of these habitats is known to vary at a number of temporal scales, including tide, diurnal, seasonal and life history stage. Studies of the interrelationships between estuarine dependent fauna and environmental conditions have attracted much attention because of the physiological and/or behavioral adaptations to the unstable environment. The black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri, is an estuarine resident species that completes its whole life cycle within an estuary. It occurs extensively in temperate estuarine waters in southern Australia. This species is the subject of major recreational and commercial fisheries throughout its distributional range and has been the subject of several studies on mainland Australia, though very little work has been conducted in Tasmania.

Problems associated with epizootics include high mortality rates, increased susceptibility to other pathogens, high labour costs of treatment and enormous expenditures on chemotherapy. In the present article we review current knowledge on this bacterial pathogen, focusing on important aspects such as the phenotypic, serologic and genetic characterization of the bacterium, its geographical distribution and the host species affected. The epi- zootiology of the disease, the routes of transmission and the putative reservoirs of T. maritimum are also discussed. We include a summary of molecular diagnostic procedures, the current status of pre- vention and control strategies, the main virulence mechanisms of the pathogen, and we attempt to highlight fruitful areas for continued research.     The importance of environmental flows to the spawning and larval ecology of black bream (Sparidae: Acanthopagrus butcheri) Joel Williams BSc (Hons) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2013 Department of Zoology ABSTRACT In this thesis I investigate the link between environmental flows and black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri productivity in the Gippsland Lakes in south-eastern Australia. Environmental flows describe the quantity, timing and quality of freshwater flows to maintain a healthy ecosystem. This is of particular importance to estuaries which are highly productive ecosystems supporting many fisheries. Over the past decade, there has been increasing evidence of a link between environmental flows and catch per unit effort (CPUE) data. Many studies have attempted to understand the basis of this relationship but with limited success. The focus of this thesis is on black bream; an iconic species that supports large recreational and commercial fisheries. Black bream is also unique in that it completes its entire life-cycle within a single estuary. In recent decades there has been a marked decline in commercial catches of black bream that has coincided with a decline in freshwater flows. Although such declines are often blamed on fishing pressure, it is possible that environmental flows underpin this pattern. In 2007, I sampled 23 sites, including the lakes and three tributary rivers, to establish the temporal and spatial distribution of black bream eggs and larvae. Using oblique plankton tows, I established that black bream spawned from September through to December with egg concentrations peaking in October. Black bream eggs were found in similar concentrations throughout the lakes and rivers.

Abstract Aquaculture is an essential industry for global food security, with production surpassing that obtained from wild capture fisheries. Future development of this profit- driven industry to meet the needs of a rapid growing population is dependent on the improved efficiency and sustainability of feeding methods. The health and nutrition of broodstock is crucial as it directly influences larval development and survival. Wet diets of whole fish and cephalopods are often fed to broodstock, however, they are abundant in long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids and high rancidity making them prone to oxidation while in storage. Oxidation makes feed products rancid and degrades reproductive organs in fish, namely the livers. This leads to smaller spawns and reduction in larval survival. Aquaculture production is often limited by poor larval performance as a direct influence of inadequate knowledge of broodstock nutritional requirements. Due to the variance in nutritional requirements at a species level, investigative research is required. Acanthopagrus butcheri, an important recreational fishing species in Australia, fits the criteria for diversification of small-scale aquaculture production outlined by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations.
