  • A Love Affair with Latham? AUSTRALIAN NEWS MEDIA CHRONICLE JANUARY-JUNE 2004
A Love Affair with Latham? AUSTRALIAN NEWS MEDIA CHRONICLE JANUARY-JUNE 2004 John Harrison “Wishful intelligence, the desire to please or reassure the recipient, was the most dangerous commodity in the whole realm of secret information.” James Bond in Ian Fleming’s Thunderball (1961:112) This critical interpretation of key issues and events in the Australian news media in the first half of 2004 analyses trends in four areas: the reporting of politics, changes in media policy and regulation, attempts to limit media freedom through restrictions on reporting, and movements in people, ownership, and broadcasting ratings. Of particular significance are the failure of the Australian Broadcasting Authority to adequately address cash for comment, a failure which had a considerable flow on effect; continuing challenges to the integrity of the ABC from within and without; mooted changes in defamation law; and a perception, again from within and without, that the Nine television network was losing its pre-eminence in commercial broadcasting. Much of the reporting and the policy debate were conditioned by the prospect of a closely contested federal election in the second half of the year. POLITICS: Luvin’ Latham The Australian media’s love affair with Opposition Leader Mark Latham is the big political news story of the period under review. Pictures of Mark Latham reading to small children; and then Latham standing beside Bob Brown in the Tasmanian forests, Mark Latham putting out the garbage at his western Sydney home, Mark Latham’s man boobs, and Mark and his son Ollie sharing a chip butty. The pic-facs have been endless.1 Elected on 2 December 2003 as a replacement for the hapless Simon Crean by the narrowest of margins (47 to 45), Latham’s ascent was a surprise for many journalists and apparently the Liberal 1 (Photo: Sydney Daily Telegraph 24 April 2004).

  • Speaking Truth: the Play of Politics and Australian Satire
School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Department of Communication and Cultural Studies Speaking Truth: The Play of Politics and Australian Satire Rebecca Louise Higgie This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University October 2013 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgment has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: …………………………………………. Date: ………………………... Abstract This thesis examines the contemporary interplay between satire and politics, focusing on texts that envisage and engage with politics in unconventional and often mischievous ways. There is a long tradition of scholarship concerned with issues such as satire’s ability to promote subversion, awareness, apathy or even cynicism; the potential, or lack thereof, of satire to influence any change in political or journalistic discourse; and the relationship between satire and “truth,” particularly in satire’s capacity to “speak truth to power.” My research expands on this tradition, asking, how does televisual and online political satire contribute to shifting political discourses? Focusing primarily on the under-researched relationship between satire and Australian politics, this question is considered through textual and discursive analysis. Firstly, I examine the difference between cynicism and its ancient counterpart kynicism in order to illustrate how different types of satire approach the idea of truth and truth-telling. I then explore how the larrikin, the carnivalesque and a cultural “distaste for taste” play an important role in the way satirists are given legitimacy to speak on political issues in Australia.

In almost 20 years together Lano & Woodley won the coveted Perrier Award for best show at the Edinburgh Fringe, starred in their own television series and toured sold-out shows across the country. They said ‘Good Bye’ in 2006 with a national tour that took in 34 markets and sold more than 125,000 tickets. Since the farewell tour, Colin has become a mainstay of the Australian theatre, appearing in productions such as Don's Party, Company for MTC/STC, Two For The Road: The Music of Movie Maestro Henri Mancini and The Mikado. pub to theatre and stadium TV productions. TICK F***ING TOCK Screening from Tuesday, 2 October at 9.30pm on ABC & ABC iview The Doug Anthony Allstars were comedy superstars, until Tim Ferguson unexpectedly pulled the plug, breaking the hearts of Paul McDermott and Richard Fidler. Years later they discovered Tim had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and put aside their differences to reunite and live the glory days again. This two-part documentary series, Tick F***ing Tock chronicles the story of the bad boys of Australian comedy – and for the first time they confront how Tim’s MS impacted on their friendships at each step to international stardom. This is also an enduring love story between Tim and Paul, two of our greatest creative minds with the same confrontational attitude they’ve always had. All the while knowing that time is not on their side – Tick F***ing Tock… “You can’t help seeing what’s going on between these two guys and how long they’ve been together and what they’ve been through and they’re still going through. It’s a really, really moving thing for the audience, you know I’ve got to admit it, it occasionally gets to me as well…” Paul Livingston. Curated by comedy curmudgeon Ted Robinson, who gave the Allstars their first Australian break on the TV program The Big Gig, Tim, Paul and Richard discuss why the group broke up and the sadness of watching their friend deal with his debilitating illness – and in Allstars’ style, they can’t help being candid, moving, irreverent and funny.
