  • Big Coppitt Johnsonville Subdivision Road Mitigation Project
Monroe County Big Coppitt Key Johnsonville Subdivision Road Mitigation Project GIP Project Description Page 1 of 7 Monroe County Big Coppitt Key Johnsonville Subdivision Road Mitigation Project Community Development Block Grant – Mitigation Program General Infrastructure Program Big Coppitt Key - Johnsonville Subdivision Road Mitigation Project PROJECT DESCRIPTION Purpose and Description: Monroe County is the Southernmost County in the Continental United States. It is comprised of the Florida Keys, which are a string of over 800 low-lying islands stretching 130 miles in length and connected by only one road in and out, the Overseas Highway (US1). This grant application requests $8,514,819 in Community Development Block Grant- Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) grant funding to improve roadways in the Johnsonville subdivision located on Big Coppitt Key by designing and constructing an engineered storm water collection, treatment and disposal system. Figure 1 details the location of the project. This project will protect access to 86 residential homes that are subject to frequent and persistent flooding due to storms, tides, and that are at risk for future sea level rise impacts. The Big Coppitt Johnsonville subdivision drainage improvement project site is an approximately 18-acre area in a residential neighborhood that is located on the north side of Big Coppitt Key at mile marker 10 in the lower keys. The roads on the western side of the subdivision are at low elevation and frequently flood during rain events. The tidally influenced groundwater is high and the area does not drain naturally. Public Works crews are frequently dispatched to the area to pump storm water out of this low area to prevent water from flooding on adjacent properties.

  • Benthic Resource Assessment Knights Key Resort Water Observation Platform
Benthic Resource Assessment Knights Key Resort Water Observation Platform Prepared for: Knights Key Resort 1 Knights Key Boulevard Marathon, Florida 33050 Prepared by: May 21, 2018 Knights Key Resort Observation Platform – Benthic Resource Assessment Introduction Knights Key Resort is located at 1 Knights Key Boulevard, marathon, Monroe County, Florida. The facility is currently undergoing re-development as a resort hotel. A water observation platform is proposed to provide guests viewing access to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The proposed water observation platform is a “T” design that extends from uplands out into shallow waters. The proposed walkway is 4’ in width and extends appx. 119’ over submerged lands and wetlands. The proposed terminal platform is 160 sf (16 x 10). The entire structure (walkway and terminus) is elevated a minimum of + 5.0 MHW and the decking is light-transmitting grating. The project was designed to comply with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/National Marine Fisheries Service “Construction Guidelines in Florida for Minor Piling- Supported Structures Constructed in or over Submerged Aquatic Vegetation”. Project plans prepared by Weiler Engineering were submitted as part of the application for the project and contain full construction details. An assessment of the benthic resources potentially impacted by the project expansion project was conducted on May 11, 2018. The objective of the benthic assessment was to assess and document living marine resources potentially impacted by the proposed project. In addition, a specific-purpose survey for corals was conducted to fulfill Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) requirements. Methods An in-water assessment of the project area was conducted on May 11, 2018 by scientific divers experienced in conducting resource assessments of benthic habitats found in the Florida Keys.

  • EMERGENCY EVACUATION BUS PICK-UP STOPS Monroe County
EMERGENCY EVACUATION BUS PICK-UP STOPS Monroe County encourages individuals living in storm surge planning zones and mobile homes to have arrangements in place to stay outside of the areas called for phased evacuations during a tropical storm or hurricane. These arrangements should be in place prior to the start of hurricane season (June 1st). Monroe County Emergency Management will activate specific Emergency Evacuation Bus Pick-Up Stops along US 1 Highway as directed by the Monroe County Sheriff Office. In addition to the zones, mobile home parks are vulnerable to high winds and residents are encouraged to take buses at nearest designated stop if unable to provide their own transportation. It is the responsibility of the residents to get to designated pick up site. These Emergency Evacuation Bus Pick-Up Stops are identified by the attached Monroe County Sheriff list. The buses placed into service for the evacuation will have displays that read “EMERGENCY EVACUATION” and these buses will only travel between the Emergency Evacuation Bus Pick-Up Site and the Hurricane shelter out of the county. Please note that the evacuation zones are pre-determined individually for each storm.
