ALICE “BABS” CHRISTY - 1951-2014

Babs Christy was not a runner, though she did walk a few HTC 5Ks when she could. However, Babs was "fully interac- tive" before the term was appropriated by the digital revolution and thus was an asset to the club. She absolutely loved to en- counter new people and offer assistance in any way. One of the highlights of her year - and a top priority - was the opportunity to John and Babs Christy help out at the Cotton Row registration. She loved to meet and greet folks who 20-MINUTE COGNITIVE WORKOUT were new to the CR. Interestingly of Portugal, who was third in the first Olympic Marathon for women, won (2:25:40) the following 1988 Olympic Marathon beating of Australia by just 13 seconds. Lisa Martin ran her first marathon at our Rocket City Marathon in 1983 and still holds the Rocket Steve Ivey, City women’s course record of 2:32:22.

On behalf of the Huntsville Track Club, I want to thank you for inviting our club to be part of the John Hunt Park improvement project. Our club is a significant user of the park, particularly the Cross Country Run- ning Trail and our membership is excited to be involved. In order to assist with the needs of the project the Huntsville Track Club has agreed to donate Five Thousand Dollars and will recruit as many volunteers for the Tree Huntsville Work Day scheduled for September 27 as well as any additional work days that may be scheduled in the fu- ture. We look forward to working together to make John Hunt Park a great place to en- joy for all of Huntsville.

Best Regards,

HTC NEWS 217 - 33 SHORT, EASY STRENGTH WORKOUTS FOR RUNNERS

By Christy Scott, Fitness on the Move, LLC, HTC Member § I have written articles in the past discuss- 3. Wall sit, hold for 45-75 seconds ing the importance of strength training for runners. I want to expand on that concept and give some suggestions on exercises that are easy to fit into your schedule. As a runner, getting your training miles in is likely more important to you than getting in other forms of physical activity. Many runners put strength training on the back- burner because they just “don’t have time” or they think that it will hinder their running. If you can squeeze in 20 minutes, 2-3 times 4. Plank, hold for 45-75 seconds per week, you can get great benefits from strength training. Many people also think that you need a fancy gym with lots of equipment in order to get in a good work- out. Compiled and Maintained by Buck Jones § CRITERIA: Criteria for a state record include the following: (1) Alabama resident (2) U.S. citizen (3) Race run in Alabama (4) Certified courses. BIRTHDATES: Anyone noting their name in the state record listings, please call or write if I show no birth date for you. CHANGES: Potential changes to this list or any future list are welcome, just call or write me at the phone- address listed below. HELP: Race Directors, Club Board Members, and Runners, help me a little and I will be able to provide you with accurate state records.

Alabama Running Data Center - Phone: 256-539-1922 C-O Buck Jones, 2920 Eastern Shore Drive, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763

e-mail: [email protected]

P - Pending Record, birthdate/hometown required within 6 months of race date or will be dropped. a - Point to Point Course, better than State Record but not eligible for State Record. * - Non U.S. Citizen, better than the State Record but not eligible for a State Record. # - Best Time for Distance-Sex on Point to Point Course. T - Tie performances for same age.

RACE DIRECTORS: Race directors please note the following information if you have a certified race. On your race results I need individual ages, not just by age groups. Also I need the home town listed, in order to confirm the runner is an Alabama resident. Without the above I can't use the results, unless the runner is well known to me. I do need birthdates for record holders and would suggest that all race directors add a place on the entry forms. I would not expect birthdates to be added to the race results but they would be available should I or USATF Road Running Information Center need them. USATF RRIC is the national data center for long dis- tance road-track racing, having taken over from the NRDC. I will process all Alabama race results as the state record keeper through to USATF RRIC.

NOTE: Birth dates are still required for an age record, however those dates are no longer being published.
