Because Citizens for America and Freedoms Foundation tend to overlap in many directions, I was very hopeful in trying to put them together. As you know, we were successful in merging the American Council for Coordinated Action into Enterprise America and then putting those two into Freedoms Foundation just so there wouldn't be so many different solici tations to business and the faithful. ( Bill Simon and I even went so far as to suggest that Lew Lehrman and Jack Hume take over Freedoms Foundation, Enterprise America and ACCA, all of which had been merged so that there would be only one powerful instrument in the marketplace. This thought 11 we were unable to sell. The old cliche, not invented here, 11 is still with us. -

Journal of Nationalism, Memory & Language Politics Volume 13 Issue 1 DOI 10.2478/jnmlp-2019-0002 Shadow Memorial Diplomacy: The Ronald Reagan Centennial Year in Central and Eastern Europe György Tóth University of Stirling Abstract This article examines the use of the memorialization of Reagan in transatlantic relations – specifically in the commemorations of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Year in 2011 in Central and Eastern Europe. Extrapolating from the case of Hungary, the article argues that because of the contemporary political status of its drivers and its oblique message, the Reagan Centennial’s campaign in Central Europe can be called “shadow” memorial diplomacy, which in 2011 used the former president’s memory to articulate and strengthen a model of U.S. leadership and foreign policy parallel to and ready to replace those of the then Obama administration. This study can serve as an international extension of previous scholarship on the politics of the memory of Ronald Reagan within the United States, as well as a case study of the use of memory in international relations. Keywords diplomacy; Ronald Reagan; memorialization; transatlantic relations Introduction Despite the great volume of scholarship written about the 40th president of the United States, few scholars have concentrated exclusively on the memorialization of Ronald Reagan. Policy-focused studies have tended to evaluate Ronald Reagan’s legacy as president (Schaller 2011; Heclo 2008). Other scholars have measured the rhetoric about Reagan as a symbol of U.S. conservative ideology and policy by comparing it with the president’s actual record in politics and policy (Longley et al. 2007). -

A century and a half ago, the famous French literary critic Sainte-Beuve[1] predicted that Tocqueville’s writings would become an inexhaustible subject of reflection for future generations of scholars. Two centuries after Tocqueville’s birth, almost everyone agrees that Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution are indispensable sources for any student of modern democracy.[2] In memorable pages, Tocqueville described the key features of the democratic revolution at the core of which lies the trend toward greater equality of conditions. He surpassed his contemporaries in being able to shed fresh light on the main dilemmas of democracy, a regime which, he argued, has to be purified of its potentially destructive elements in order to be able to survive in the long-term. We often tend to forget that Democracy in America was the book of a twenty-nine year old author, with almost no first-hand political experience. When Volume One came out in January 1835, Tocqueville’s work was immediately compared with Aristotle’s Politics and Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws. -

First, I illustrate the multiple meanings of the concept of American Exceptionalism and in what sense it is indebted to Tocqueville. Second, I articulate how the historical background and personal qualities of Tocqueville contribute to the success of his masterpiece Democracy in America. In the main part, by analyzing Tocqueville’s Democracy in America and other writings on America, I argue that he indeed reveals America as exceptional and increasingly recognizes this idea through a process of intellectual development. An elaboration on Tocqueville’s theoretical contribution to the discussion of American Exceptionalism can reveal the different images of modern democracy and how they would influence the prospect of human freedom. -

From the publication of the second volume in 1840 until his death in 1859, Tocqueville continued to monitor political developments in America and committed many of his thoughts to paper in letters to his friends in America. He also made frequent references to America in many articles and speeches. Did Tocqueville change his views on America outlined in the two volumes of Democracy in America published in 1835 and 1840? If so, which of his views changed and why? The texts translated in Toc- queville on America after 1840: Letters and Other Writings answer these questions and offer English-speaking readers the possibility of familiarizing themselves with this unduly neglected part of Tocqueville’s work. The book points out a clear shift in emphasis especially after 1852 and documents Tocqueville’s growing disen- chantment with America, triggered by such issues as political corruption, slavery, expansionism, and the encroachment of the economic sphere upon the political. Aurelian Craiutu is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. He received his Ph.D. in political theory from Princeton University in 1999 and was the 2000 winner of the American Political Science Association’s Leo Strauss Award for the best dissertation in the field of political philosophy. -

In 1831, the young French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville and his best friend Gustave de Beaumont traveled from the France of Louis-Philippe to the America of Andrew Jackson. While their ostensible purpose was to research and write a useful report on prison reform, their actual purpose was to establish some distance between themselves and the new July Monarchy until they could decide how best to further their fledgling legal careers in the challenging political climate of post-revolutionary France. In addition to visiting prisons, speaking to prison wardens, and interviewing prison inmates, then, they also took copious notes on every other aspect of American life that they could observe as they traveled up, down, and around the United States and Canada from New York in the east to Michigan in the west and from Quebec in the north to New Orleans in the south. DEMOCRACY AND THE DRAMA: TOCQUEVILLE AND THE THEATRE IN AMERICA, 1831-1832 Fredric M. Litto “If you would judge beforehand of the literature of a people that is lapsing into democracy, study its dramatic productions. The litera ture of the stage,. constitutes the most democratic part of their liter ature.” This pontification, so typical of its author, Alexis de Tocque- ville, may well be a key to the understanding of American cultural life during the mid-nineteenth-century period of nationalism and roman ticism . De Tocqueville, a Frenchman with an aristocratic inheritance, and a scholarly, liberal bent, came to the United States in 1831 with his friend Gustave de Beaumont to study the new American prison reforms. Their mission, an official investigation endorsed, though not paid for, by the French government, was partially in the spirit of humanitarianism of the day But it is quite clear that the two young men, de Tocqueville aged twenty-six and Beaumont twenty-nine, also had the greatest desire to visit the United States-to explore and study the fabled republic on the other side of the Atlantic. Their nine-month stay in America, from 9 May 1831 to 20 February 1832, yielded not only the promised report on the novel penitentiary systems just deve loped in the United States, but de Tocqueville’s famed philosophical commentary on the institutions and people in a democratic state, Democracy in America(l) This work was based on observations made during the intellectual adventure which took the young French men as far west as Green Bay, as far north as Quebec, and as far south as New Orleans.
