Houston Rockets General Manager's Tweet Sparks Controversy
Houston Rockets General Manager's tweet sparks controversy 08 OCTOBER 2019 Michael A. Rueda PARTNER | HEAD OF US SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT | US CATEGORY: BLOG CLIENT TYPES: FAMILY TALENT AND CREATIVES SPORT On October 4th, 2019, during a National Basketball Association (“ NBA”) sponsored trip to China, Houston Rockets general manager, Daryl Morey, tweeted “ght for freedom, stand with Hong Kong.” The tweet has since been deleted, but not before sparking geopolitical controversy and outrage from the Chinese government, which demanded an apology, and announced Tuesday, October 8th that it had canceled the planned broadcast of two NBA exhibition games due to be played in the country. The NBA had Morey apologize and put out a statement characterizing his tweet as “regrettable” and clarifying that his support for Hong Kong protesters “does not represent the Rockets or the NBA.” However, the NBA’s attempt to quell the backlash in China prompted its own backlash from United States law makers, including Ted Cruz, Beto O’Rourke, and Julián Castro who were among those to denounce the NBA for giving in to Chinese condemnations. Now, the commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, has announced that the NBA “will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees, and team owners say or will not say on these issues,” and added: “It is inevitable that people around the world… will have different viewpoints over different issues. It is not the role of the NBA to adjudicate those differences.” Silver will travel to Shanghai on Wednesday, October 9th to meet with ofcials and some of the NBA’s business partners in hopes of nding some common ground. -

He recently became the commissioner on February 1, 2014 replacing former commissioner David Stern. Prior to joining the NBA, Silver spent his time at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, a law firm in New York, and worked as a law clerk to Judge Kimba Wood for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Silver was born into a Jewish family and grew up as a New York Knicks fan. He graduated from Rye High School and completed his undergraduate degree at Duke University in 1984. Adam Silver NBA Commissioner ______
The Economic Club of New York 496th Meeting 111th Year ________________________ Adam Silver NBA Commissioner ________________________ November 20, 2018 New York City Interviewer: Stephanie Ruhle MSNBC Live Velshi & Ruhle The Economic Club of New York – Adam Silver – November 20, 2018 Page 1 Introduction Vice Chair Glenn Hutchins My name is Glenn Hutchins. I’m happy to welcome you to the 496th meeting of the Economic Club of New York, 496th. So, Barbara, we thought about who was going to be here for 500th. We ought to have a special thing for the 500th. It’s getting pretty close. For those of you, our members, you know that the Economic Club of New York is the nation’s leading nonpartisan platform for speeches and conversations on economic, political, and social issues. More than 1,000 prominent guest speakers, including many heads of state, have appeared before the Club over the last century and established a tradition of excellence. I want to thank the many members of our Centennial Society who are here. The Centennial Fund serves as the financial backbone of the Club. The Club is otherwise a very low membership dues organization. So we can have a broad range of people who are members of the Club. And so the Centennial Society members who provide some of the capital for the organization are very much appreciated. We’d also like to give a warm welcome to students in attendance today from both Syracuse and NYU Stern Business School. And we also have our Club fellows. Our Club fellows are young, rising business leaders who have become members of the Club. -
An Intersectional and Dialectical Analysis and Critique of Nba Commissioner Adam Silver and Nfl Commissioner Roger Goodell's Ambivalent Discourses in the New Racism
AN INTERSECTIONAL AND DIALECTICAL ANALYSIS AND CRITIQUE OF NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER AND NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL'S AMBIVALENT DISCOURSES IN THE NEW RACISM Linsay M. Cramer A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2017 Committee: Alberto González, Committee Co-Chair Lisa Hanasono, Committee Co-Chair Christina Lunceford Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Gorsevski ii ABSTRACT Alberto González and Lisa Hanasono, Committee Co-Chairs In 2014, the leadership performances of National Basketball Association (NBA) Commissioner Adam Silver and National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell (both men who occupy White positionality), in response to two critical moments in their respective leagues, offered insight into prevailing racial and gender ideologies between United States (U.S.) professional men’s sport, and ultimately, U.S. society. In the NFL, a domestic abuse incident between NFL star Ray Rice and his then-fiancé Janay Palmer, two individuals who do not occupy whiteness, and in the NBA, racist comments made by then-owner of the Los Angeles Clippers Donald Sterling, a man who occupies whiteness, required responses and disciplinary action from the commissioners. Utilizing critical rhetorical analysis as a method of textual analysis (McKerrow, 1989), this dissertation examines and critiques Commissioners Silver and Goodell’s rhetorical performances as leaders in response to these incidents -

The Oct. 4 tweet by Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey, who shared a picture with text saying, "Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong,” has caused a firestorm for the National Basketball Association and jeopardized its business in China. The Hong Kong protests are an extremely sensitive political issue for the Chinese communist regime. A preseason game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets in Shanghai proceeded as scheduled Thursday, won by the Nets. But according to several reports, that contest and an upcoming rematch have been pulled from Chinese state television, and Chinese sponsors are pulling out despite the league's decadeslong presence in the country. The NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in China, and the country has proven to be a lucrative and growing market for the league. While experts say the incident is likely to blow over, that does not seem to be happening fast after Silver publicly said the NBA will not apologize for Morey’s comment or punish him. -
