From your Parish Priest The television panel game ‘Call My Bluff’ hinges on three panelists each giving a definition of a word. Only one gives the correct definition – the other two must bluff, and make up a definition, presumably because the words are usually so obscure that they wouldn’t know the correct meaning anyway. The opposing team then has to guess who was correct and who was bluffing. You might think that the Bible would be the best place to find a definition of God, but even the Bible stories about God can sometimes be confusing. It can seem as though you are trying to find the right definition among several apparently conflicting versions. – just like ‘Call My Bluff’. Definition No 1. Early in the Bible, God talks directly to Abraham. He comes across as perhaps a bit dictatorial - he who must be obeyed. Abraham is told to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, as a test of obedience. This must have seemed rather fickle and confusing to Abraham, since Isaac was God’s special gift to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. God was demanding and testing, but eventually generous. However, we do see God as trustworthy, he makes a covenant and keeps it. Definition No 2. In the New Testament, Jesus tells the parable Vine and the Vine-dresser. This is part of Jesus’ farewell to his friends after the Last Supper. He talks at length of God as father, as a gentle and caring daddy. He cares for his children, but also correcting and pruning them to encourage growth and maturity. Cutting back the dead wood sometimes, in the hope of new growth, but also demanding a return – that we will be fruitful. Definition No 3. Even later, there’s the story of Philip and the Ethiopian. Here God is seen at a distance, working gently through a guiding angel. This is a gentle God, seeing potential, helping it to be developed, working through the Holy Spirit and inspiring individuals, but very much at arm’s length. So: a demanding God who expects obedience; a firm but fair parent encouraging growth; a distant but gentle God seeking to develop potential. Can we choose? No - this is not ‘Call My Bluff’ – there is no right, or indeed wrong answer. We do not have an ‘EITHER/OR’ God. We have an ‘AND’ God. God is all of this: demanding, confusing, testing, generous, gentle, guiding, parental, expectant - and more. God can be difficult to comprehend sometimes. Although we are made in his image, we cannot be all things to all people. On the other hand, God can be and is all things to all people, and is with us always. With every blessing, David

ISSUE NO: 495 JULY 2019 Barton and Irstead Churches Fete May I thank all those who contributed in any way to make the fete such a success this year. The weather was kind to us with a glorious afternoon. May I particularly thank all those who worked so hard setting up and taking down everything. I believe that the taking down was done in record time. My thanks also to all the stall holders, the customers and particularly to Jeanie Peel for allowing us once again to use her beautiful garden. Barbara Pilcher

This year unlike last year we were very fortunate with the weather which was sunny all day. Attendance was slightly down on last year but all the stalls seemed to be as busy as usual. At the time of writing the income from the event stands at £2585. Very many thanks, not only to all those who attended but also to all those involved with the setting up, manning the stalls and clearing up afterwards. This involves many months and hours of planning and a lot of hard work. Once again a big thank you to Jeanie and her family for the use of the beautiful gardens of Barton Hall. Brian Thompson, Treasurer, Barton Turf PCC

Cake and Bottle stalls: May we thank you all for your kind donations to the Cake and Bottle stalls. Without your generosity neither stall would be as successful as they are. A special thank you to all those who attended the Fete for the first time on moving to Barton and Irstead for giving so generously. Gail and David Murrells

St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf I have thanked everyone elsewhere in the magazine for all that they did to make the fete such a success. A good deal of hard work done by all. Our July coffee morning will be on Saturday 20th July from 10am until 12noon. Coffee and scones as usual as well as produce stall and book stall. We are always happy to receive produce for the produce stall, whether baked items or fresh items from the garden. I hope you will join us for a coffee and a chat. A reminder that I am still looking for baptism gowns, wedding gowns and items connected with baptisms, weddings and funerals for our Hatch, Match and Dispatch display in the church from Thursday 8th August to Sunday the 11th. Entry will be free and there will be refreshments available. Put the date in your diary and bring friends and family along. If you have any items that you can loan us for the exhibition do please get in touch with me on 536132. Barbara Pilcher

Claire Penstone-Smith Neatishead Church Plant Sale Despite it being a really cold and wet day the plant sale was a great success, and we made a record sum of £811. As well as being a success financially I felt it was a good community event, and for that I would like to thank everyone for coming. Without you it would be nothing. My thanks go to those who helped in whatever way, to everyone who took the time to pot plants up for us, and last but no means least to Chris and Julie Walls for allowing us to use their garden, which was lovely as usual despite the rain. Hopefully it will be better next year! Jane Fowle

Auction for Parkinson’s UK at the New Victory Hall on Saturday 2nd November There are amongst our community people who are suffering from this progressively debilitating illness. One such person known to many of us continues to serve our community and it is for this reason that a small group of us have decided to raise money for Parkinson’s UK on 2nd November in the NVH through holding an auction of promises and objects of quality. Although this is an early announcement of this event, we are very mindful of how time rushes by, especially if you are retired! Already we have several very good ‘promises’ and will try and keep you updated on what they are through our excellent NIB magazine. This community never lets itself down when raising funds for worthwhile organisations and so it is with optimism that we look forward to 2nd November. Please, if you can help, contact email: [email protected] Or if you prefer 01603 784363. Thank you. Nick & Jane Fowle, Dianne Pickering, Hugh & Jude McGill and Claire Penstone-Smith

Women’s Institute May started off with a trusty band of Members walking in Park to raise money for ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World), the international charity supported by the WI movement which funds small scale, life-improving initiatives relating to literacy, health, nutrition, water, farming, sanitation, education and women's rights in 75 countries. Perhaps knowing there was to be a fish and chip lunch in at the end of the walk put a spring into their step! At our May meeting, Liz Scott took the part of Kath, an actual scullery maid in the 1930s, telling us amusing anecdotes about the Living History of Blickling Hall. We voted in favour of two Resolutions to be discussed at the National Annual Meeting in June (‘Don’t Fear the Smear’ and ‘A Call against the Decline in Local Bus Services’) - and we reminisced over WI archives, a selection of which had previously been displayed at the last NVH Farmers’ Market. Monica Riley, 630336

Gardening Club Dutch Tulip Mania was the subject of Charles Lewis’ fascinating talk at our May meeting. Speculating in the futures market is not a new phenomenon with huge amounts of money involved centuries ago! A reminder that Roger and Susan Lamb have kindly offered to host the annual BBQ at Point Farm on Monday 15th July 6 for 6.30pm. Jamie Thompson will be catering for the BBQ as last year. The cost of this event will be £10 to include a glass of wine/fruit juice, sausage and hamburger, plus salads, and a dessert. Please can we have final numbers and payment to Pauline (535482) by Monday 8th July. Schedules for the Annual Show on Saturday 7th September are now available in the White House Stores. If you have any problems obtaining a schedule please contact me and I’ll happily deliver it for you. We have been invited to put on a Gardening Club display at the August Farmers’ Market on the 10th. Thanks to James and Fan who have offered to do a screen presentation displaying plants, etc from members’ gardens so please let them know when you have anything suitable to be photographed. Sadly we don’t seem to have any archive material relating to the history of the club and its past members so please if you do have any old photographs or documents please let Susan Lamb (536240) know as she will be coordinating the display. Many thanks, Jane King, 630002. Neatishead White Horse Bowls Club – Three Hammer Common The weather during the 2nd week of June was so wet, a number of matches had to be postponed. Wildlife Notes Two days after I wrote last month’s notes the four remaining Blue Tits in my nestbox decided to fledge and fly the nest. I got home from work at 5pm just in time to see the last one climbing up the brickwork of my garage wall. It managed to cling onto the bricks and made its way to the pitched roof where after a little rest it sat still, looking a little vulnerable, on the top of the ridge. A few minutes later it launched itself on its maiden flight and descended into a bush on the border of my garden where I suspect its siblings were already waiting. I am writing these notes during an awful wet, cold week in mid June and my feeders are very busy with young birds including a small family of Blue Tits. I hope that they are faring well. Amongst the visitors are a couple of young Greater Spotted Woodpeckers who have been introduced to my peanut feeders by their parents. All the birds have red underparts but the adult male has a small patch of red on the back of its neck, which the female does not have. The juveniles however have a big patch of bright red on the tops of their heads and are instantly identifiable. The Greater Spots are expanding their range northwards and doing well in stark contrast to their sparrow-sized cousins, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, whose numbers have plummeted dramatically. When I first moved here in 1987 I used to see them at Alderfen Broad regularly and even in my garden occasionally but I haven’t seen one locally for some years. Lesser Spots feed high on trees on tiny branches which would not support the weight of a larger bird and seldom come to bird feeders in gardens. July is the month where most birds have finished breeding and we can look out for dragonflies and butterflies in our gardens. Another declining species (87% in 50 years) is the Spotted Flycatcher, a small pale bird with a slightly spotted front and a light brown head and back. It tends to sit on a perch and dart out to catch flying insects before returning to the same perch. They used to nest in my garden in the 1980s but the only pair I know of locally are at Irstead unless you know of others. Do please let me know. Jerry Simpson, 630674, [email protected]

Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club The last few weeks have been a busy time for our club, with a host of different fund raising activities for a number of different charities. We collected outside Roy's for Shelterbox, and raised just under £300; over the May bank holiday weekend we manned the entrance gates at Strumpshaw, which earned the Club £1500: and then finally in early June we organised a special Open Gardens event at How Hill Farm where we manned the car park, the entrance gates and provided teas and cakes, and thanks to great weather raised the magnificent sum of £850. May we say a huge thank you to everyone who attended/contributed to any of these events, as well as a big thank you to all our members who got involved! The start of July sees a new president take over when Simon Gorton takes office, as well as some other major changes to the club’s senior officers as we start a new Rotary year. We are also honoured that one of our members Jonathan King has now taken on the role of District Governor for the local Rotary District covering Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. At the same time our own club membership has been boosted by a number of former members of our parent club, Broadland Rotary Club, which has unfortunately been forced to fold due to a decline in numbers. We welcome all of them and look forward to a strong and successful 2019/2020 year with them. Our next big event sees the revival of an old favourite...yes, the Hoveton Art Show is making a welcome reappearance and will feature a number of popular local artists! It will take place on the weekend of 14th and 15th September in Hoveton Village Hall, and all proceeds will be going to the Nancy Oldfield Trust. Further details next time, but make a note in your diaries now. Meantime, if you fancy finding out a bit more about us and what we get up to, we meet every Monday evening at Wroxham Barns. Please contact our secretary Mick Eady in advance on 670616 to check the meeting details and so we can ensure we have food for you. Visit our web-site on www.wroxhamrotary.org.uk for more information and details of our exciting programme for 2019, or our Facebook page on www.facebook.com/wroxhamburevalleyrotaryclub or contact our president, Simon Gorton on 538582.
