The summary account below omits one of the most striking cases, that through Grace Cooke1 but raises the question – who was the mystery Scottish lady who impressed Lady Conan Doyle? —~§~— Across the Gulf – by Maurice Barbanell, Psychic Press, 1940, pages 49-62: A FEW minutes after he died, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle announced that fact in a dramatic fashion to one of his daughters. Mary Conan Doyle was in her father’s psychic library and bookshop in Victoria, South West London, when, to her surprise, the charwoman became entranced. Sir Arthur spoke through her lips and told Mary that he had passed on a few minutes ago. This was her first news of his death. -

Of particular interest are the files of séance records, 1932-1950, in Volume 7. A list of files giving volume number, file number, subject and date of each file is available in the King finding aid, number 502. It should be noted that there is also much information on Mackenzie King and spiritualism in the King Diaries Series (MG 26 J13). ESSAY a Critique of Arguments Offered Against Reincarnation
Journal of Scienti$c Exploration, Vol. 1 1, No. 4, pp. 499-526, 1997 0892-33 10197 01997 Society for Scientific Exploration ESSAY A Critique of Arguments Offered Against Reincarnation Department of Philosophy, University Plazu, Georgia State University Atlanta, Georgia 30303-3083 Abstract - In his recently published book Reincarnation: A Critical Exami- nation (Amherst, New York: Promethius Books, 1996). Paul Edwards has of- fered a number of arguments against the possibility of reincarnation. It is a sweeping effort to show that the very idea of reincarnation is illogical and in- defensible. While not arguing directly for reincarnation, this essay criticizes the main arguments, methodology and polemics wielded in what is more an effort to debunk than to carry out the critical examination claimed in the title of the book. In criticizing Edward's arguments this essay is criticizing the major objections available against the reincarnation hypothesis. Keywords: reincarnation -philosophy Introduction In his recent book Reincarnation: A Critical Examination (Amherst, New York: Prometheus Books, 1996), Paul Edwards examines critically both the belief in reincarnation and the belief in the Law of Karma. For the author, both beliefs are mutually entailing and demonstrably indefensible. The author is strongly inclined to think that the belief in reincarnation is conceptually inco- herent (rather than simply false) because of the "nonsensicality" of such no- tions as the "astral body" and the "womb-invasion" of the prospective mother by the soul or astral body. (p. 28) However popular such beliefs may be, the author seeks to show that they are not only foolish myths, unworthy of any ra- tional human being, but also part of the tide of irrationalism sweeping the Western World. -
Erlendur Haraldsson and James G. Matlock. Hove: White Crow Books, 2016
Book Reviews I SAW A LIGHT AND I CAME HERE: CHILDREN’S EXPERIENCES OF REINCARNatION by Erlendur Haraldsson and James G. Matlock. Hove: White Crow Books, 2016. This highly informative book by two eminent reincarnation researchers comes in the form of 32 short chapters, presented in two parts written separately by each author. The first part, by Erlendur Haraldsson, concentrates primarily on investigations of children reporting memories of a past life, while in the second part James Matlock, an anthropologist by training, provides a broader context for this phenomenon. The first part includes mainly accounts of Haraldsson’s own investigations of numerous cases in Sri Lanka, Lebanon, India and Iceland. However, this is not simply a review of the existing database of cases; there are historical cases as well as some new and ongoing ones, and both authors refer to the work of other researchers, including Ian Stevenson, Antonia Mills, Jim Tucker and Hernani Andrade. The selection with which we are presented is thus aimed at providing us with a comprehensive insight into the current state of the field and the direction in which the research seems to point. In much of the literature on the subject we hear only about the most impressive cases of past-life memories fitting a previous personality (solved cases), but this is hardly a balanced view, as this volume clearly demonstrates. Striking cases can be found — like the solved case of a Druze boy in Lebanon — so full of remarkable instances of behaviours, recognition of family members, and memories of unusual details (like having his car batteries charged twice by Israeli soldiers when driving from Beirut) that it seemed “too good to be true” (p. -
The Physical Mediumship of the Bangs Sisters and an Examination of Their Precipitated Spirit Portraits
Seeking to Establishing Knowledge and Understanding /www.the-voice-box.com /[email protected] The Physical Mediumship of the Bangs Sisters and an examination of their precipitated Spirit Portraits. By N. Riley Heagerty It is August, the year is 1911. A large audience has filled to capacity the auditorium at the world famous Chesterfield Spiritualist Camp in the State of Indiana, America. They have come to witness a demonstration of psychic power, one of the most unique and marvelous in the entire world. A select committee has arranged beforehand that upon entering the building, all have been given a numbered ticket, the stub of which is torn off and put into a large vat to be thoroughly mixed up; later on, one stub will be randomly drawn from the collection. Now, after a close examination by the committee to see that there are no markings or paint of any kind, or signs of chemical treatment, a large plain canvas is placed on an easel in the centre of the stage. The spirit mediums who will demonstrate the phenomena now enter the auditorium, they are sisters and appear to be about 35 to 40 years of age. Both take their seats on the rostrum, one situated on each side of the easel and clearly four to five feet from it; they will never touch the canvas throughout the entire demonstration. A member of the committee now reaches in and selects from the vat one ticket stub and reads the number aloud to the audience; it belongs to a Mrs. Alice Alford. -

The History Spiritualism
THE HISTORY of SPIRITUALISM by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, M.D., LL.D. former President d'Honneur de la Fédération Spirite Internationale, President of the London Spiritualist Alliance, and President of the British College of Psychic Science Volume Two With Eight Plates Sir Arthur Conon Doyle CHAPTER I THE CAREER OF EUSAPIA PALLADINO The mediumship of Eusapia Palladino marks an important stage in the history of psychical research, because she was the first medium for physical phenomena to be examined by a large number of eminent men of science. The chief manifestations that occurred with her were the movement of objects without contact, the levitation of a table and other objects, the levitation of the medium, the appearance of materialized hands and faces, lights, and the playing of musical instruments without human contact. All these phenomena took place, as we have seen, at a much earlier date with the medium D. D. Home, but when Sir William Crookes invited his scientific brethren to come and examine them they declined. Now for the first time these strange facts were the subject of prolonged investigation by men of European reputation. Needless to say, these experimenters were at first sceptical in the highest degree, and so-called ‘tests’ (those often silly precautions which may defeat the very object aimed at) were the order of the day. No medium in the whole world has been more rigidly tested than this one, and since she was able to convince the vast majority of her sitters, it is clear that her mediumship was of no ordinary type. -
