www.silverdalechamber.com | 21 A KITSAP CAMPING ADVENTURE AWAITS YOU

By Kassie Olmsted Kitsap County is home to some of the most beautiful camp- grounds with sweeping views of mountains and miles and miles of shoreline. Whether you’re from out of town or you’re a local looking for a night or two under the stars, these local campsites will have you singing around the campfire in no time. Just don’t forget the smores! Scenic Beach State Park - Seabeck Hands down, one of the most picturesque campgrounds in the area is Scenic Beach State Park. The Olympic Mountains looming over the blue waters of Hood Canal is enough to make anyone stop in their tracks in awe. The park features 70 campsites made up of 52 tent spaces and 18 pull-through sites for RVs. Each campsite comes complete with a fire ring, grill and table. The campground also features restrooms, hot showers and a dump station. Besides camping, you can do a variety of outdoor ventures at this 121-acre state park – swim, fish, bike, picnic, kayak, go for a nature walk, or simply just relax and gaze at the stunning view. With 1,500 feet of saltwater beachfront, you can spend hours along the shore searching for shells or admiring the multitude of scurrying hermit crabs hiding under the rocks. The park is rich in history, and features the Emel House which dates back to 1911. Originally a resort for the locals, Scenic Beach became a state park in the 1960s and demolition was planned for the house, but it was saved by a community group that rallied to save it. Today, it serves as a popular venue for weddings and other small gatherings.

22 | Silverdale & Kitsap Desination Guide Magazine 2019-2020 Kitsap Memorial State Park – Poulsbo This 62-acre camping park is another beauty to set your sights upon when considering your next camping destination. With more than 1,700 feet of shoreline, also on the Hood Canal, Kitsap Memorial State Park is a popular spot for campers and newlyweds alike as it’s a popular wedding spot. Both tent campers and RV campers can choose from several different campsites including 20 standard campsites, three partial hook-up sites, 15 full hook- up sites, and three hiker/biker sites. If roughing it in a tent isn’t your style, you can stay in one of four cabins furnished with kitchenettes, a bunk bed, futon, and lights and heat. Kitsap Memorial State Park features an array of outdoor activities including 1 ½ miles of hiking trails, beach exploration, swimming, and bird watching. There’s a volleyball field and two open fields perfect for a game of Frisbee, kite flying, or playing catch. The park also has picnic shelters and barbecue grills. Eagle Tree RV Park – Poulsbo

The park features two picnic shelters - the Hillside Picnic Shelter If you’re a military buff, you won’t want to miss the opportunity and Beach Picnic Shelter where you can enjoy being right on to camp out next to a former torpedo warehouse which at the beach for your special occasion. And if you’re up for it, bring one point stocked an underwater mine during World War your bicycle and enjoy a ride along one of the bike paths. II. Another large draw to this 128-acre camping park is its extensive and scenic shoreline. You can walk its 3,400 feet of shoreline while taking in the view of Bainbridge Island on a clear day. The park also boasts 2 miles of hiking trails. You’ll also find a volleyball court and horseshoe pit. When its time to turn it in for the day, you’ll find 35 standard campsites, 15 partial-hookup sites, and two restrooms and showers. Even more compelling than the views, is the park’s history. According to Washington State Parks, it was established by the Coast Artillery Corps in the early 1900s. After being used to house torpedoes and underwater mines, it was converted to a Navy fuel supply depot during World War II. In the 1960s, the federal government declared it surplus and a decade later it was acquired by Washington to use as a state park. Marine State Park One of the most unique state camping parks in Kitsap County (and maybe even in Washington), Blake Island Marine State Park is only accessible by tour boat or private boat. But it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. The island features miles and miles of trails for both bikers and hikers. Or you can partake in the Argosy Cruises Tillicum Excursion featuring a fire-roasted fish buffet meal and a Northwest Native American performance. The campground includes 44 standard sites, three Cascadia Marine Trail sites, one marine dump station, restrooms and showers. The island features a moorage dock plus 24 mooring buoys. At the park’s office, you can buy food, fire logs and camping supplies to ensure you have everything you need for this island camping experience. There are several public access points like docks and beaches that have some of the best fishing around. And don’t forget about lake fishing! There’s plenty of that too. But no matter where you fish, just remember, a recreational fishing license is required. Be sure to check out the Washington Depart- ment of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) website for all the details. And now on to the matter of the day: Where to catch those fish! Public Beaches Ahhh, a day at the beach. Does it get much better than that? Well, it does when you can incorporate a day of fishing! Just don’t forget your waders as temperatures in Puget Sound can still be a bit frigid even on the warmest of summer days. Central Kitsap Scenic Beach State Park in Seabeck provides one of the most picture-perfect fishing spots in Kitsap County. You can fish right off the shores or launch your boat at the neighboring Misery Point Boat Launch. North Kitsap The Point No Point Water Access Site in Hansville is one of the most popular places to fish in Kitsap County. And for good reason! It’s also one of the most plentiful fishing spots. Not only is this a popular fishing spot for salmon, but also flounder, perch, halibut and lingcod. There’s plenty to see and do with a nice sandy beach and plenty of fishing boats to watch. Salsbury Point Park is another popular spot to catch some fish with an incredible view of the to boot. While fishing is not permitted from the floating pier, put on some waders and you’ll be at your limit in no time. Docks No boat? No problem! Hit up one of the many fishing docks and piers in Kitsap where you can even throw down a crab pot to see what might wander in (just don’t forget you need a separate shellfish license to catch crab).
