3. ARTISTIC OR OTHER CREATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS 5

2000: Bambiraptor feinbergi skeleton, Graves Museum of Natural History, Ft. Lauderdale, FL - I was consultant and collaborator for this project. 1999: Bambiraptor feinbergi prototype, FossilWorks, Inc., Rapid City, SD and Lawrence, KS - Produced by myself and David Burnham. 1997: rex skull cast, mounted and displayed as a contribution from the Lance Dinosaur Project, on ten year loan at Anna Miller Museum, Newcastle, WY. In my role as Director of the LDP, I organized the display project, arranged funding, designed the restoration, participated as one member of the restoration team, and installed the exhibit. 1996: Edmontosaurus annectens skull casts, similar arrangement to above at Anna Miller Museum for two years loan. 1995: horridus skull cast, restored and mounted as a contribution from the Lance Dinosaur Project, on 2-year display at Anna Miller Museum, Newcastle, WY. Same personal role as 1997 and 1996 entries above. (Now off exhibit) 1993: The Dallas Protostega, a restored and free-mounted skeleton of a 4.2m Cretaceous sea , on permanent display at the Dallas Museum of Natural History. I was scientific advisor for the preparation and display team, working for the museum in Dallas, and with their metal worker in Houston. c. 1993: Eryops cast mounted with my student workers to demonstrate that any could be shown in a realistic "perky pose". Univ. New Orleans 1992: Archelon ischyros, a restored and free-mounted cast of the 4.6m Vienna Archelon, on permanent display at Nagoya Port Aquarium, Nagoya, Japan. I was scientific advisor for the casting and restoration, working for Dino Works, Inc. in Vienna and at their lab in Toronto. 1989: Pathways to the Past, a small exhibit building at Audubon Zoological Garden devoted to the link between and . I was one of the scientific consultants for this project. I also prepared and painted four casts for exhibit, three lithographicus and one Compsognathus longipes. 1987: Clidastes propython, a 1m x 2.5m plaster panel showing a mosasaur skeleton as it originally lay in the ground, temporary display in the UNO Geology Department. I directed the project and participated with my students in all aspects ofthe preparation. Note: Within vertebrate paleontology, the presentation of such projects is a proper means of scientific contribution. Each item documents both technical skill and scholarly achievement. Such displays are not standard scientific presentations outside my field, perhaps because they have the questionable attribute of being interesting to a wide range of audiences, perhaps also because the work requires a collaborating team that includes artists and technicians, as well as scientists.

Kraig Lawrence Derstler 6

The above list includes only a few major items. I have prepared or supervised preparation of other skeletons, casts, and sculptures. Examples include a sculpted full-size dinosaur nest, a huge stand-in-it dinosaur footprint cast, unmounted Triceratops skeletons, and so on.

7. GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

A. Grants and Contracts Received

Much of my research money comes from non-traditional sources: - funding which I have generated through speaking engagements, - funding for twelve years of summer expeditions for the Lance Dinosaur Project generated through participant fees, private donations, and a nationwide program called Exca Vacation (approximate total $60K) - funding for the acquisition of fossils through an active private/corporate fund raising campaign (best year - $50K for 1996).

Kraig Lawrence Derstler 9

Since these are my three principle sources of research funding, this section does not accurately reflect my activity or my success at generating funds. Also note that I have been actively engaged in fund raising at UNO and Graves Museum of Archaeology and Natural History in greater Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We recently succeeded in obtaining more than $500,000 to purchase a Velociraptor skeleton and place it into public hands. This effort required over three years of effort on the part of an entire team of workers.
