At the time this book was written, she was the chief nurse and senior vice president of Patient Care Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She now holds the position of chief operating of!cer and executive vice president at Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals. Before returning to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Hickey was a clinical nurse specialist, associate professor, and chair of the graduate pro- gram for clinical nurse specialists at Yale University School of Nursing. Dr. Hickey has served nationally in a variety of nursing leadership positions, including as a director of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, as a member of the Cardiovascular Nursing Council of the American Heart Association, and as a director of the Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership in Boston. She has participated on several national task forces to advance public policy and nursing practice and education. She has published widely in peer- reviewed jour- nals, has an extensive record of national presentations, and has served on several editorial or review boards, including Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, American Journal of Critical Care, Nursing Clinics of North America, Nursing Research, and others. She earned her bachelor’s de- gree in nursing from Boston College, her MSN from Boston University, and her PhD from the University of Connecticut. She is a fellow in the American Heart Association. Phyllis Beck Kritek, RN, PhD, FAAN, is a nationally known nurse-scholar and author, and is sought as a speaker, consultant, coach, and facilitator on con"ict engagement; organiza- tional/leadership development; gender, generational, and multicultural communications; and globalization. Dr. Kritek has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books and has produced two books: Negotiating at an Uneven Table: Developing Moral Courage in Resolving Our Con!icts (Jossey-Bass, 1994; 2001), and Re!ections on Healing: A Central Nursing Construct (NLN Press, 1996). Dr. Kritek has served on the editorial board of several nurs- ing journals and was the editor of Nursing Forum from 1989 to 1992. She has held a variety of academic leadership roles, including dean of nursing at Marquette University; founding doctoral program director and director of the Center for Nursing Research at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and Florence Thelma Hall Distinguished Professor in Nursing and founding doctoral program director of the University of Texas School of Nursing at Galveston. She earned her MSN and PhD degrees at the University of Illinois College of Nursing, and was awarded their Distinguished Nurse Alumna Award in 2000. Dr. Kritek is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and has served in a variety of professional organization leadership roles with the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP), NLN, NANDA, the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), and the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR). She is a past recipient of a Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship, where she initiated her involvement in con"ict engage- ment. Her international work has been as a consultant, educator, and group facilitator to health care communities in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, India, and Iraq. In 2003, she resigned her academic position to create her sole proprietorship, “courage,” to dedicate herself full time to providing con"ict engagement services to health care professionals. Tobbell, Ph.D. Interviewer ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTER ORAL HISTORY PROJECT UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTER ORAL HISTORY PROJECT In 1970, the University of Minnesota’s previously autonomous College of Pharmacy and School of Dentistry were reorganized, together with the Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health, and the University Hospitals, into a centrally organized and administered Academic Health Center (AHC). The university’s College of Veterinary Medicine was also closely aligned with the AHC at this time, becoming formally incorporated into the AHC in 1985. The development of the AHC made possible the coordination and integration of the education and training of the health care professions and was part of a national trend which saw academic health centers emerge as the dominant institution in American health care in the last third of the 20th century. AHCs became not only the primary sites of health care education, but also critical sites of health sciences research and health care delivery. The University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center Oral History Project preserves the personal stories of key individuals who were involved with the formation of the university’s Academic Health Center, served in leadership roles, or have specific insights into the institution’s history. By bringing together a representative group of figures in the history of the University of Minnesota’s AHC, this project provides compelling documentation of recent developments in the history of American health care education, practice, and policy. 2 Biographical Sketch John Westerman was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After earning a bachelor of science in law from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and then attending law school for two years, he was called up as a member of the ROTC to serve in the Air Force.

    Leadership for Relationship-Based Care Marie Manthey Magnet Conference Plenary Session Delivered October 17, 2004 Good morning. It is my pleasure to introduce the distinguished nurse who developed the concept of Primary Nursing, Marie Manthey. Marie is founder and President Emeritus of Creative Health Care Management, a full-service consultation company specializing in professional practice, management training, staff empowerment, and work redesign. Marie's interest in the delivery of hospital services began in the1960s, when she developed the concept of Primary Nursing. Since that time she has designed and implemented Primary Nursing programs for numerous hospitals. Prior to consulting, Marie held positions at every level of nursing, from staff nurse to vice president for patient services. Marie received her nursing diploma from Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Chicago, and both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota. In 1994 Marie was elected to the Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom, at the time one of only four American nurses to be so honored. In May 1998 she was selected for fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing. Marie has written many articles on timely nursing topics, in addition to the book The Practice of Primary Nursing. It is truly a pleasure to have such a nursing icon among us. Please welcome Marie Manthey. (applause) Good morning. Thank you. North Dakota Nursing Faculty We as RNs need to promote our profession. We are taught critical thinking...let’s use it! Urban North Dakota RN We need to work on the image of nurses... not just bedpans and shots...and not just female. North Dakota LPN student You hear all the time about teachers’ salaries in ND, but you never hear anything about nurses’ salaries. Maybe it’s our fault. We’re not being proactive. You work hard to save a life, for really, not a very good salary. That’s unfortunate. Rural North Dakota RN Nursing is a very difficult job. There needs to be good pay for hard work. North Dakota Director of Nursing Satisfaction comes from knowing you helped someone... just seeing them get better or making a procedure easier for them. Urban North Dakota RN There’s a better nurse-patient relationship in a rural area, because you spend more time with them.
