At the time this book was written, she was the chief nurse and senior vice president of Patient Care Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She now holds the position of chief operating of!cer and executive vice president at Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals. Before returning to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Hickey was a clinical nurse specialist, associate professor, and chair of the graduate pro- gram for clinical nurse specialists at Yale University School of Nursing. Dr. Hickey has served nationally in a variety of nursing leadership positions, including as a director of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, as a member of the Cardiovascular Nursing Council of the American Heart Association, and as a director of the Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership in Boston. She has participated on several national task forces to advance public policy and nursing practice and education. She has published widely in peer- reviewed jour- nals, has an extensive record of national presentations, and has served on several editorial or review boards, including Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, American Journal of Critical Care, Nursing Clinics of North America, Nursing Research, and others. She earned her bachelor’s de- gree in nursing from Boston College, her MSN from Boston University, and her PhD from the University of Connecticut. She is a fellow in the American Heart Association. Phyllis Beck Kritek, RN, PhD, FAAN, is a nationally known nurse-scholar and author, and is sought as a speaker, consultant, coach, and facilitator on con"ict engagement; organiza- tional/leadership development; gender, generational, and multicultural communications; and globalization. Dr. Kritek has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books and has produced two books: Negotiating at an Uneven Table: Developing Moral Courage in Resolving Our Con!icts (Jossey-Bass, 1994; 2001), and Re!ections on Healing: A Central Nursing Construct (NLN Press, 1996). Dr. Kritek has served on the editorial board of several nurs- ing journals and was the editor of Nursing Forum from 1989 to 1992. She has held a variety of academic leadership roles, including dean of nursing at Marquette University; founding doctoral program director and director of the Center for Nursing Research at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and Florence Thelma Hall Distinguished Professor in Nursing and founding doctoral program director of the University of Texas School of Nursing at Galveston. She earned her MSN and PhD degrees at the University of Illinois College of Nursing, and was awarded their Distinguished Nurse Alumna Award in 2000. Dr. Kritek is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and has served in a variety of professional organization leadership roles with the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP), NLN, NANDA, the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), and the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR). She is a past recipient of a Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship, where she initiated her involvement in con"ict engage- ment. Her international work has been as a consultant, educator, and group facilitator to health care communities in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, India, and Iraq.
