As a first time coach, or as a coach who has never coached a hockey style format, you are probably asking yourself how was I talked into this? If you already know the answer to that, then you may be asking yourself “What do I do now”? This manual will answer some of your questions. Ball hockey, like standard ice hockey is a fast-paced game requiring the combined elements of speed and skill. In a matter of seconds, the game moves quickly from offensive strategy to defensive strategy. Your ability to prepare ahead of the actual game itself ultimately dictates how easy or difficult your job as a coach becomes. For all divisions scheduling practice times, organized practice plans and even whom you select as assistant coaches can all have a dramatic impact on your team‟s success during the course of the season. Your goals should be for your players to have fun, develop or enhance their skills, develop or enhance leadership and sportsmanship skills and share in your team‟s success, whatever your team‟s definition of success may be. Please keep in mind, success and fun is subjective in definition to individuals alike. What is fun to one person may not be to another. Ultimately, we all want ball hockey to become an enjoyable sport for players, parents and coaches for many years to come. This is a fun filled sport, you can‟t go to university on a ball hockey scholarship. What is a Coach? 1. “In sports, a good coach has plenty of knowledge, they know how to motivate people and they have a passion for helping individuals get better”. Scotty Bowman Coaching is for anyone who enjoys and cares about kids. It is for women, men, parents, grandparents, high school and university athletes. What does it take to coach? It takes people who are sensitive, caring and organized. People who may not have played hockey but have the knowledge of the game to pass on and teach to others and who are willing to obtain proper training and continue to upgrade their coaching skills . People who thrive on working with others and who teach from the heart. Coaching a team requires a time commitment, practice planning and game strategy. When you coach kids, the results are real and immediate. There is responsibility as you enter the lives of young people. You share in the satisfaction as they learn, refine and master skills and implement the strategies that you have created. You share in the victories ,disappointments and setbacks that are part of any sport. More importantly, you share in their understanding of the word “team” and “team player”. However, the results of coaching are also subtle and long term. Through ball hockey, you will help players grow and develop as individuals. The athletic skills they learn from you are used for only a few years, but the attitudes and life skills they develop towards themselves and others will last a lifetime. Lead by Example: Teach and demonstrate fairness, co-operation, self-discipline, and respect for officials, the game of ball hockey and team opponents. Set a good example by never using foul language, showing up late for games or practices, and by following the principles of fair play. Lead by helping the team establish challenging but realistic goals, taking into account the ability and development of the players. Page 1 DMBHA Coaches Survival Guide 2012 Teach skills, strategy and rules: Be ready, willing and able to help your players develop to their full potential, while recognizing their differences. They come from different backgrounds, diverse talents, and grow and develop at different rates. Organize the team for games and practices: Emphasize FUN. Stress variety; encourage your players to try different positions keep things in perspective. Be flexible and willing to learn as you develop your skills as a coach. Do not be afraid to make mistakes or to ask for help when you need it. Fair Play : Ensure that all players get equal instruction, support and playing time. Encourage all players to play. Without playing time, players will not learn to enhance their skills and progressively become better players. Page 2 DMBHA Coaches Survival Guide 2012 Preseason
