    Description of Wild Land Area – 2017 18 Kinlochhourne -Knoydart – Morar Wild Land Area 1 Description of Wild Land Area – 2017 Context This very large area, extending 1065 km2 across Lochalsh and Lochaber, is the fourth most extensive WLA and only narrowly separated from the second largest, Central Highlands (WLA 24). It runs from Glen Shiel in the north and includes a large proportion of the Knoydart peninsula and the hills between Lochs Quoich, Arkaig and Eil and Eilt, and around the eastern part of Loch Morar. Major routes flank its far northern and southern edges, the latter to nearby Fort William, but it is otherwise distant from large population centres. It is one of only three mainland WLAs to be defined in part by the coast, on its western edge. The area contains in the north and west high, angular and rocky mountains with sweeping slopes towering over a series of steep sided glens and lochs, which extend into a more jumbled mass of rugged mountains within the central interior, with linear ranges of simpler massive hills in the east. These are formed of hard metamorphic rock that was carved during glaciation, creating features such as pyramidal peaks, corries, U-shaped glens, moraine and the remarkable fjords of Lochs Hourn and Nevis. Later erosion is also evident with the presence of burns, gorges, waterfalls and alluvial deposits. The distinctive landform features are highlighted against the open space and horizontal emphasis of adjacent sea and lochs. The WLA is largely uninhabited, apart from a few isolated crofts and estate settlements around the coast and loch shores.

    12 2.1 Rob Roy and the Jacobites Rob Roy MacGregor, the third son of Donald Glas MacGregor of Glengyle and Margaret Campbell, was born in Glengyle, on Loch Katrine-side, in 1671. He spent much of his life in the Trossachs, the area of lochs and rugged hills lying east of Loch Lomond. From Aberfoyle to Killin, the Way skirts the eastern edge of the Trossachs. Rob Roy was a man of property and was involved in large-scale cattle droving and dealing. He and his brother Iain developed the Lennox Watch, a body that offered ‘protection’ to cattle owners in return for money. When protection money was not paid, cattle tended mysteriously to ‘disappear’. Activities like this by the MacGregors and some other clans gave us the word ‘blackmail’, black for nefarious deeds and the colour of most of the cattle of past times; mail from Scots and Gaelic words for rent or payment. (The larger, and mainly red-brown Highland cows that we see today are a 19th century cross-breed.) After his father was captured and imprisoned, at the age of only 30 Rob Roy effectively became the Chief of a leading section of his pugnacious and persecuted clan. In those days the powerful Duke of Montrose was his patron. His luck changed and his business collapsed when his drover Duncan MacDonald disappeared, taking with him the enormous sum of £1000 intended for cattle purchase. In 1712 the Duke of Montrose (to whom he owed money) turned against him and had him bankrupted and outlawed. His wife and family were evicted, and several of his houses were burned or ransacked.

    The Inventory of Historic Battlefields – Battle of Glenshiel The Inventory of Historic Battlefields is a list of nationally important battlefields in Scotland. A battlefield is of national importance if it makes a contribution to the understanding of the archaeology and history of the nation as a whole, or has the potential to do so, or holds a particularly significant place in the national consciousness. For a battlefield to be included in the Inventory, it must be considered to be of national importance either for its association with key historical events or figures; or for the physical remains and/or archaeological potential it contains; or for its landscape context. In addition, it must be possible to define the site on a modern map with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The aim of the Inventory is to raise awareness of the significance of these nationally important battlefield sites and to assist in their protection and management for the future. Inventory battlefields are a material consideration in the planning process. The Inventory is also a major resource for enhancing the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of historic battlefields, for promoting education and stimulating further research, and for developing their potential as attractions for visitors. Conveniently situated by the Glen Shiel road is the Jac-O-Bite Restaurant (3) – don't let the exterior fool you, the restaurant may have the appearance of a road-side diner but has attracted excellent reviews. Also nearby Shiel Bridge is Glenshiel Ponytracking (4) (suitable for children aged 6 and above). Day trips around & about Lochcarron There are also several sights to see on the road over to Glenelg. The Bernera Barracks (1) are a relic of the Hanoverian period dating back to around 1717; one of four barracks constructed in the Highlands following the initial Jacobite risings. Glen Shiel is also the location of one of the major battles of the 1719 Jacobite uprising and in the aftermath of the '45 uprising Charles Stewart (a.k.a. Bonnie Prince Charlie) spent part of the summer hiding in the Glen. Lochcarron Community Development Company aims to revitalise the community to ensure its long term economic, social, cultural and environmental sustainability by managing community land and assets for the benefit of the community and the public in general.
