Celebrating the 10th year of MITTIE BALL TCU celebrates Head Coach Jeff Mittie’s 10th year at the helm of the Lady Frog basketball program in 2008-09.

Since his arrival in Fort Worth prior to the 1999-2000 season, Mittie has turned TCU into one of the most consistent winning programs in women’s college basketball. Prior to his first season, the Frogs had totaled only one winning record and a .330 winning percentage in 17 seasons as members of Division I.

Nine seasons, 196 wins and eight postseason bids later, the Lady Frog program is on the most stable foundation of the program’s history.

Milestones reached in the Jeff Mittie era include:

196 Lady Frog victories (school record)

41 wins over current members of BCS conferences

12 victories over top-25 teams

7 NCAA Tournament bids

5 conference championships

5 NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances

5 top-25 finishes

Players have come and gone over the last decade, but one thing that Helena Sverrisdottir has stayed consistent is the winning tradition that Mittie’s staff has instilled in his teams. The Lady Frogs under the guide of the current staff have turned a once-dormant program that had notched only a single winning season in 17 years as a member of the Division I ranks into one of the nation’s most consistent winners. Mittie’s nine seasons have seen the squad average nearly 22 victories per campaign while advancing to the postseason for the first eight times in school history—including an astonishing seven straight NCAA Tournament bids from 2001 through 2007. The program’s first Women’s NIT appearance was added last season. The foundations of those teams were built on the shoulders of some talented individuals. But like with any other successful college program, the true challenge lies in the ability to continue that success once that talent has been lost to graduation. That same challenge awaits the Lady Frogs in 2008-09, one year after the team earned its highest finish (second) during its three seasons as members of the Mountain West Conference. A year ago TCU was able to field a versatile team that thrived because of its deep talent at the guard position. The Frogs were solid at handling the ball, averaging only about 16 turnovers per game to finish second in the MWC. On the other end of the court, the squad had one of the top defensive seasons in school history, giving up only 60.1 points per game while forcing more than 21 turnovers a contest. The core of that team, a five-player senior class that amassed the second-most wins in school history, is gone. The numbers put up by Adrianne Ross, Lorie Butler-Rayford, Moneka Knight, Jenna Lohse and Helen Roden were staggering−4,038 points, 1,960 rebounds, 1,127 assists and 776 steals during their Frog careers. Despite the heavy losses, TCU appears primed to continue the program’s tradition of excellence by mixing in an infusion of new talent with the proven veteran presence left over from last season’s team. The significant change in personnel could shift the Lady Frogs’ strength from speed to versatility and size in 2008-09, Mittie believes. “I like our ability to score inside a little better than what we were able to the last couple years,” Mittie said. “I “Our size is probably our biggest strength when taking in account our ability to put size in different spots on think we can do it with different people. This will be a different team, because we have never had a point guard the floor,” Mittie said. “We can put some size at the point guard spot and not just the power forward and other like Helena (Sverrisdottir). How we utilize that size will be different and fun for us as a coaching staff.” traditional spots. We are going to have an extremely high basketball IQ and utilize the size we have to create While development of new leadership and chemistry would appear to be a potential obstacle with the some mismatches.” heavy losses suffered during the offseason, Mittie believes his current team has that angle covered. The shift in size should give the Frogs a completely different look from the up-tempo, guard-oriented teams “I think we saw that taken care of the minute our season ended last year,” Mittie said. “As soon as we took that combined to win 44 games over the past two seasons. some time off and came back from the offseason, this team started to build that relationship and trust with each other. I’ve been very pleased with this group off the court. They have been accountable, reliable and trustworthy—all the things it takes to be a cohesive team.” Jeff Mittie THE VETERANS One very important piece to last season’s team is back in Sverrisdottir, a sophomore who earned Mountain West Conference Freshman Player of the Year honors during her first season in Fort Worth. Sverrisdottir averaged 9.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and was a fixture in the starting lineup from the season’s opening tip. She spent much of the past offseason playing in Europe for her native national team in Iceland. Sverrisdottir brings tremendous versatility to the TCU lineup, and Mittie’s staff can match her up at any spot on the floor at any time in the game. One position where the staff hopes it can utilize her extensively is at point guard, the role she plays when with her teammates in Iceland. “We will try to utilize Helena’s talents at all different spots on the floor,” said Mittie. “She adjusted to the speed of the college game very well a year ago, so that will enable us to play her at more of the guard spots than we did last season. We want to get her more involved with handling the basketball.” Adding experience behind the arc along with Sverrisdottir is fellow sophomore Emily Carter, who made major contributions a year ago off the bench as one of the team’s best 3-point threats. Carter averaged 5.4 points while playing just over 15 minutes per contest as a redshirt freshman and led the Frogs in both 3-point (38.1 percent) and free-throw (84.8) shooting. While Carter was utilized mainly as a spot-up shooter, the Frogs hope to get her on the move a little more this season. “We felt like we could get Emily open in a spot-up situation last year, but we couldn’t run her off many screens,” Mittie said. “She spent a lot of time in the spring doing that, and I think we saw an improved and quicker shot from her.” 2008-09 Season Preview “This group that sat out (last season) is hungry to play,” Mittie said. “It has been a long time since they played Micah Garoutte in a college game, and I think they will be ready to go.” Mangum, voted in the preseason as the Mountain West Conference’s Newcomer of the Year, returns to the court after transferring from Louisiana Tech following the 2006-07 season. The 5-8 guard played two seasons as point guard for the Lady Techsters and was named to the All-WAC Freshman Team following her first season. Mangum has the ability to play any of the guard positions for TCU and appears to be in line to run the point when the Frogs elect to move Sverrisdottir around the floor. “Eboni is super-quick off the dribble, can get to the rim and can play in an up-tempo offense,” Mittie said. “She can also shoot the three, so we feel she has the potential to be an impact player for us.” A former youth basketball teammate of Mangum’s in the Houston area, LaFleur arrived at TCU after helping Nebraska reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven seasons as a sophomore in 2006-07. LaFleur is one of the Frogs’ more athletic players and possesses great ability shooting off the dribble, in addition to providing the squad with another accurate long-range weapon. “TK is a very good long-range shooter with good cutting ability in our offense,” Mittie said. “Her pull-up game has developed nicely, and she is a good off-the-ball defender. TK is another one of these players who has experienced success at a high level elsewhere, so we believe she will be a great addition to this team.” John also sat out last season after playing two seasons for George Washington, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of her two campaigns. She should give the Frogs much-needed flexibility in the post, as she can score down low and shoot the mid-range jumper. John’s name should be familiar to those who follow TCU’s program, as she posted her career scoring high of 11 points against the Frogs as a sophomore in 2006-07. “Chantelle is very crafty inside and can shoot the 17- or 18-foot jumper, in addition to the trail 3-pointer,” TCU possesses another long-range weapon in junior Shayla Moore. Only used in a limited role during her Mittie said. “Her face-up game is better than people think. She just needs to get an opportunity to play more first two seasons, Moore looks to shake off a prolonged shooting slump that plagued her much of last season. than 10 or 15 minutes a game. With her long arms and ability to work inside, I think she is going to be a good “Shayla had always been a great shooter in high school, and last year is the first time she had ever really fit in our offense.” struggled,” Mittie said. “Those high school flaws got exposed a year ago. She has worked really hard to correct One of the players who have the Frogs most excited about the coming season is Rachel Rentschler. A native those things. I know she really wants to have a big year, and I think she can have a big year for us.” of the Fort Worth area, the 6-2 forward saw playing time in 34 games last season for Texas, which reached the In the frontcourt, the Frogs return two physical presences in sophomore Micah Garoutte and senior Micaela second round of the NCAA Tournament. She was highly recruited by TCU during a prep career at Fort Worth Younger. Christian High School in which she totaled the fourth-most points ever for a Texas high school player. Garoutte was inserted into the starting lineup at the center spot midway through her freshman season and made progress both offensively and defensively throughout the second half of the year. During TCU’s Micaela Younger 69-68 loss to San Diego State in the MWC Tournament semifinal, she tied for the team lead with 12 points and blocked a career-high five shots. Garoutte’s development should be even more magnified with another season at the college level under her belt. “Micah had a great summer developing her game, and her early fall workouts have been very good,” Mittie said. “We hope to be able to play her out on the perimeter a little more as a power forward this season. She was a player who ended the year very strong, and hopefully she can pick up where she left off.” TCU’s lone senior on the 2008-09 roster, Younger hopes for more consistency in her final campaign after starting nine games during the first half of last season. After recording one of the top games for a Frog last season during a 21-point, 11-rebound performance against No. 12/11 Texas A&M, she struggled through the second half of the year and saw a significant decrease in minutes. Offensive consistency will be key for her during her senior season. “Micki continues to show glimpses here and there,” Mittie said. “She is physical, is running the floor better and is our best defender in the paint. We would like to see her score more effectively down low and be more consistent in that area. If she can score more consistently, she can be a good option for us down low.”

THE TRANSFERS Along with the five returning members of last season’s team are seven newcomers who will be looked at to help TCU keep its high standing in the Mountain West Conference. Among the new faces are four transfers who will bring high-level talent to the floor. “We do have more experience than shows up on paper here at TCU,” Mittie said. “Not only that, but we have players who were playing at programs that were competing at a high level and were successful at that level.” Three of the players, juniors Chantelle John, TK LaFleur and Eboni Mangum, sat out all of last season after transferring from other major college programs. The other, sophomore Rachel Rentschler, played last season as a true freshman but received a waiver from the NCAA to avoid having to sit out the upcoming campaign.
