Professional Sports Leagues Around the World and Sports Became a Business with Owners of Sports Teams on Lines Similar to Owners of Companies
EAMSA 2015 Competitive Paper 1. Introduction: Elite sports, the way we know it, have had a large fan following for more than a 100 years. The modern Olympics starting in 1896 was a turning point in organized elite sports across different types of sporting events. As the Olympics have evolved they have taken in more sports under its umbrella. Individual sports have had their own specialized events at regular intervals. These include the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament that started in 1877 and the Football World Cup held every four years that had its first edition in 1930. Initially elite sports people were amateurs for whom sports was a past time and not a profession. Over the years professionalization of sports took place as sports people converted what used to be a past time into a full-fledged profession. This led to the formation of a large number of professional sports leagues around the world and sports became a business with owners of sports teams on lines similar to owners of companies. Sports as a business opened up different ways to monetize the purchasing power of sports fans and led to the creation of a variety of different revenue models. The advent of professional sports leagues happened in Europe and North America. Europe developed professional sports leagues in football that included the English Premier League (EPL), La Liga in Spain, Bundesliga in Germany and Serie A in Italy. In North America the professional sports leagues revolved around the sports popular in that part of the world. These included Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), and National Hockey League (NHL). -

Why Does One Not 'Walk'?
Aum Sri Sai Ram Why does one not ‘walk’? Virendra Sehwag slashes hard and Taufiq Umar spills the offering at the slips. Mistake : By the Fielder. Beneficiary: Batsman. Sachin Tendulkar caught bat-pad but appeal turned down. Mistake: By the Umpire. Beneficiary: Batsman. These two seemingly different scenarios have more similarities and lessons than what meet our eyes. A moment’s reflection on the above two instances perhaps will have more than mere academic value, for as it so often happens in sports as in life, it is one’s reactions to the happenings on the field that characterize him / her more accurately than even the wealth of knowledge, and possibly talent too, that one is supposed to possess on the game itself. Firstly, in both the cases it is the batsmen who stand to gain. Secondly, it is the fielding team that is left with heartburns as a result. Perhaps the only difference in the above two scenarios is that the fault lies on different ends. Why then do we not complain in the first case, but take a moral high ground, in the latter, and condemn the beneficiary? What is so special in the second case that catapults us on to a pedestal and hands us a judge’s gavel to brand the beneficiary? How is it that we condemn the person who committed the mistake in the former but overlook, or sometimes even sympathize with, the person who had not lived up to his professional commitment, in the latter? In fact, in the latter case we readily denounce the beneficiary. -

Math Extended Essay
Math Extended Essay Outline, Introduction and Rationale Research Question How can principles of Probability and Markov chains be used in T20 cricket to find convergence patterns in the areas in which shots are hit for a particular batsman during a particular innings which can in turn help in better field placements?(Given his previous batting history) Aim To find and predict convergence patterns in terms of areas in which runs are scored for a particular batsman( AB de Villiers) in a particular innings given his past scoring patterns. Introduction Right from my childhood, I have always been an ardent sports fan. So when I started looking for potential IA and extended essay topics, I was sure that these topics had to be related to sports in some way or the other. After some thought, I chose Cricket as my sport due to various factors. Firstly, being a passionate cricket player and fan myself, I thought that I would be able to comprehend and relate an investigation on cricket better than an investigation on other sports. Furthermore, my personal involvement with the topic itself would provide me additional motivation and interest towards the investigation itself. Even from a mathematician’s perspective , I personally think that cricket is best suited for an investigation on statistics and Markov chain modelling because of the sheer volume of variables, data and statistics each game of cricket provides. The mathematical possibilities are endless! One can investigate batting averages, bowling averages, strike rates, fielding averages , economy rates etc . The list really is endless. So it was decided, my extended essay would be on cricket.
