The University Athletic Association Has Announced Its Fall Listing of Student-Athletes to Be Honored with All-Academic Accolades 115 Sully’s Trail, Suite 14 • Pittsford, New York 14534 Phone: (585) 419-0575 FAX: (585) 218-0951 O CTOBER 24, 2013 UAA ANNOUNCES FALL 2013 ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS 547 UAA STUDENT-ATHLETES RECOGNIZED FOR ACHIEVING GPA OF 3.300 OR BETTER The University Athletic Association has announced its fall listing of student-athletes to be honored with All-Academic accolades. The fall academic honor roll includes 547 student-athletes representing teams participating in the three men’s and three women’s fall sports for which the UAA sponsors competition. Within the UAA, All-Academic recognition is awarded to student-athletes who have completed at least one full year of college study and who carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.300. The 3.300 minimum cumulative grade point average is the same academic standard used as a qualifying threshold by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the nomination of Academic All-America® candidates in all sports. The 547 recipients of UAA All-Academic recognition represent approximately 58 percent of the total eligible UAA student-athletes — members of all teams who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study. Percentages varied by institution with a high of 64 percent of eligible student- athletes earning All-Academic honors. Percentages among sports varied with a high of 73 percent of eligible cross country runners receiving All-Academic recognition. The UAA Presidents Council established a program of All-Academic recognition in April 1998. Qualifying student-athletes are recognized at the completion of the fall, winter, and spring seasons each year. The honor is intended to recognize the high level of academic achievement demonstrated by student- athletes who effectively balance their significant commitment of time, effort, and energy in athletic endeavor with their highly challenging academic responsibilities. Individuals and teams throughout the UAA have been consistently recognized for their academic and athletic achievements. During the 2012-13 academic year, 36 student-athletes from UAA institutions were recognized as Academic All-Americans, 149 received All-America honors in team or individual sports, and seven garnered individual national championship accolades. In addition, nine student-athletes were among the select group of seniors across the country named NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. In 2012-13 NCAA championship competition, 17 UAA teams finished in the top ten in their national championships, while another 13 finished in the top twenty. Biennial studies completed by the Association since the 2006-07 academic year have consistently shown that the cumulative grade point averages of athletic teams have been statistically equal to or greater than the campus population GPA. In the most recent study, covering the 2010-11 academic year, 54 percent of all men’s teams and 49 percent of all women’s teams across the UAA had average cumulative GPA’s equal to or higher than the overall average for their respective campuses. Of the 65 women’s teams and 68 men’s teams included in the study, 45 women’s teams (69 percent) and 37 men’s teams (54 percent) met or exceeded the 3.30 GPA standard for nominating individuals for Academic All-America® recognition. 2013 UAA Fall All- Academic Honorees Women’s Cross Country Maggie Hensel Brandeis So. • Title: the Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher's Guide of 20Fh Century Physics
REPORT NSF GRANT #PHY-98143318 Title: The Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher’s Guide of 20fhCentury Physics DOE Patent Clearance Granted December 26,2000 Principal Investigator, Brian Schwartz, The American Physical Society 1 Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20740 301-209-3223 [email protected] BACKGROUND The American Physi a1 Society s part of its centennial celebration in March of 1999 decided to develop a timeline wall chart on the history of 20thcentury physics. This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government.
