KEYNOTE PRESENTATION KEYNOTE PRESENTATION ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS AND CANCERS Elisabete Weiderpass Vainio Department of Research, Cancer Registry of Norway, Institute of Population-Based Cancer Research, Oslo, Norway and Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden Objectives: To present an overview of environmental risk of cancer globally. Methods: Comprehensive literature review of environmental causes of cancer. Results: In 2012 it is estimated that estimated 14 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million cancer deaths occurred. Globally, a substantial proportion of all cancers are attributable to the environment, including work setting. More than 100 agents, mixtures, and exposure situations are identified as carcinogenic to humans. External environmental causes of cancer are factors in the environment such as pollutants that increase risk for cancer. Approximately every tenth lung cancer death is closely related to risks in the workplace. Lung cancer, mesothelioma, and bladder cancer are among the most common types of occupational cancers. Conclusions: Cancer is a leading cause disease burden worldwide, and its important will increase in the next decades. Globally, a substantial proportion of all cancers are attributable to the environment, including work setting. Most of these cancer are preventable. Key words: cancer, environment, occupation 7 B. SESSION: ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH SESSION: ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH INVITED LECTURES ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS ON NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES Holger Stark Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany Objectives: Neurological development as well as neurodegeneration is strongly influenced by environmental factors. Not only natural factors, but with increasing influence factors from drinking water, (polluted) air, and also from agricultural products. Many studies have investigated different factors of environmental exposure on their influence on neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson´s disease. Morbus Parkinson belongs to with Alheimer´s disease to the most often neurodegenerative diseases with strong therapeutic and financial burden on the health system in general. Some studies suggest an increase in the incidence within the recent years. Whereas some pesiticides have been idenified are cause for Parkinson´s disease, the incidence for some metals are much lower and connected to higher variabilities. Materials and methods: The relationship to occupational exposure to specific metals and Parkinson´s disease has been investigated by a study on frequency mortality among individuals in Michigan countries of the United States of America (J. M. Gorell et al. 1997) with inconsistent varying results (J. A. Firestoner et al. 2010), but have been more or less confirmed on pesticides (L. S. Engel et al. 2001). In addition,the genetic variability of an genomw-wide gene-environment interaction analyiss of pesticides exposure and the risk of Parkinson´s disease has been investigated (J. M. Biernacka

    Purpose of this handout Congratulations on making it to Year 2 of medical school! You are that much closer to having your Doctor of Medicine degree. If you want to PRACTICE medicine, however, you have to be licensed, and in order to be licensed you must first pass all four United States Medical Licensing Exams. This book is intended as a starting point in your preparation for getting past the first hurdle, Step 1. It contains study tips, suggestions, resources, and advice. Please remember, however, that no single approach to studying is right for everyone. USMLE – What is it for? In order to become a licensed physician in the United States, individuals must pass a series of examinations conducted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). These examinations are the United States Medical Licensing Examinations, or USMLE. Currently there are four separate exams which must be passed in order to be eligible for medical licensure: Step 1, usually taken after the completion of the second year of medical school; Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), this is usually taken by December 31st of Year 4 Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS), this is usually be taken by December 31st of Year 4 Step 3, typically taken during the first (intern) year of post graduate training. Requirements other than passing all of the above mentioned steps for licensure in each state are set by each state’s medical licensing board. For example, each state board determines the maximum number of times that a person may take each Step exam and still remain eligible for licensure.

Kosovo is still struggling with many problems and there are enough reasons for people to be unhappy. Jobs are scarce and the economy is not growing fast enough to support a young population. Policy disagreements between UNMIK and the Kosovo Institutions have weakened the credibility of all governing institutions and, in turn, created the impression that Kosovo is going nowhere and cannot off er any future to its young people. The violent explosion in March revealed a deeply troubled society, lacking strong institutions and a culture not able to absorb shocks, accommodate its traumatized youth and Rolling Back the Collapse contain its violent, criminal minority. Then, there is the ever-present question of Kosovo’s fi nal status. Drawing on the evidence from everyday medical practice and experiences of women, users of Serbian maternity care services, this paper will tend to point to some of the important conflicts and inconsistencies that are being reproduced in Serbian health care system that is going through transition. Analysis will mainly focus on the gap between the creation of new policies and clinical guidelines and their actual implementation in practice, as well as on the unsynchronized transformation of different actors involved in medical practice that leads to tensions between sources of knowledge/models of practice in medical care. Key words: healthcare system, health policy, clinical guidelines, medical practice, process of transition Introduction: complex and incoherent character of medical practice When we think or talk about medicine, we usually have in mind something that has been written in medical books or scholarly journals. There we find a broad range of medical knowledge – from reports about research results in different areas of biomedical science, to guidelines for best medical practice and information about new developments in medical technology.
