In 1972 he completed his MusD in music at the Cambridge University, in 1990 he was awarded doctor honoris causa at the University of Southampton. Between 1964- 1977 he was a fellow of the University of Southampton and between 1977-1980 a reader at the Sussex University in Brighton. Since 1989 he is a fellow of Academia Europaea. In the works of his early twenties his music reflected Bartok, Tippett, Faure and most of all Britten, later also Messiaen and Schoenberg. Gradually he arrived, in the early seventies, at his personal method of dealing with pitch organization as the central integrating factor. Persephone Dream (1972) was, when it first appeared, perhaps the most sophisticated score produced by an English composer of Harvey's generation. Works (selection): Dialogue for cello and piano (1965), Variations for violin and piano (1965), Symphony (1966), Laus Deo for organ (1969), Benedictus (1970), Cantata VI for small choir and small string orchestra (1970), Piano Trio (1971), Peresphone Dream for orchestra 1972), Angel Eros for high voice and string quartet (1973), The Dove Descending for choir (1975), Inner Light III (1975), String Quartet (1977), Album, 1 miniatures for different chamber ensembles (1978), Hymn for choir and orchestra (1979), Tbccata for organ and tape (1980), Mortuos plango for tape (1980), Whom Ye Adore for orchestra (1981), Passion and Resurrection, church opera (1981), Curve with Plateaux for cello (1982), Ricercare una melodia for diverse instruments and tape (1985), the Path of Devotion forchoir and small orchestra 0985), String Quartet No. 2 (1988), Gong- Ring for chamber ensemble and electronics (1984), Madonna of Winter and Spring for orchestra synthesizer, electronics (1986), Timepieces for orchestra and 2 conductors (1987), From Silence for soprano, chamber ensemble, 3 syntesizers, tape with 3 technicians (1988), Cello Concerto 1990), Ritual Melodies for tape 0990). "The form of Curve with Plateaux is a simple curve from bottom to top and down again, with passages which linger in one area or another on the way. I had in mind a sort of model of human personality. The low region represents the physical, muscular level, strenuously confronting the world of matter. The next region represents the emotional, passionate level. As this rises the emotions and thoughts become increasingly refined and delicate. Near the top they touch on the spiritual and at the very top, with an almost breath-like c (the highest note on the piano), the transcendental. The way down traces the same path, except that a coda is added in the style of a death march. Thus the work could be both in the form of a life and an examination of the many layered

INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfîlming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the Him along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

Odraz myšlienok Jozefa Kresánka v súčasnej muzikológii a estetike Slávka Kopčáková Abstract: In this paper musicological, pedagogical and artistic dimensions of Jozef Kresánek (1913-1986), a founder of Slovak musicology and one of the most important figures of Slo- vak music culture, are analysed. In terms of a threefold unity of composer, scientist and tea- cher we try to outline his exceptional contribution to creation of Slovak music culture and to development of systematic and historical components of musicology. We exemplify his au- thentic ideas and thoughts on the aesthetics of music field, and we also emphasize his initiati- ve and his active cooperation in the formation of aesthetic education as a field of study and as a school subject at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s in Slovakia. Since Kresánek’s theoretical work and ideas are still up to date and challenging, we examine their transformation and re- flection in the current musical aesthetic thinking in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and pro- vide examples of several theoretical scientific works and professional books published in the last decade. Osobnosť Jozefa Kresánka - vklad do hudobnej kultúry V roku 2011 si pripomíname 25. výročie úmrtia významného slovenského muzikológa a hudobného skladateľa Jozefa Kresánka, jedného z budovateľov našej novodobej hudobnej kultúry a zakladateľa slovenskej hudobnej vedy.

  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.

This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. ii Supervisory Committee Two Responses to Modernism: Minimalism and New Complexity in Solo Flute Repertoire by Twila Dawn Bakker Bachelor of Arts, University of Alberta, 2008 Supervisory Committee Dr. Jonathan Goldman, School of Music Supervisor Dr. Michelle Fillion, School of Music Departmental Member iii Abstract Supervisory Committee Dr. Jonathan Goldman, School of Music Supervisor Dr. Michelle Fillion, School of Music Departmental Member Wind repertoire, especially for flute, has received little focused attention in the musicological world especially when compared with other instruments. This gap in scholarship is further exacerbated when the scope of time is narrowed to the last quarter of the twentieth century. Although Minimalism and New Complexity are – at least superficially – highly divergent styles of composition, they both exhibit aspects of a response to modernism. An examination of emblematic examples from the repertoire for solo flute (or recorder), specifically focusing on: Louis Andriessen’s Ende (1981); James Dillon’s Sgothan (1984), Brian Ferneyhough’s Carceri d’Invenzione IIb (1984), Superscripto (1981), and Unity Capsule (1975); Philip Glass’s Arabesque in Memoriam (1988); Henryk Górecki’s Valentine Piece (1996); and Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint (1982), allows for the similarities in both genre’s response to modernism to be highlighted.
