Isabella M T Steine UiT The Arctic University of Norway May 2019 iii Abstract Anime is a part of Japan’s biggest growing markets outside of Japan (JNTO, n.d. a; AJA, 2018). What attracts overseas consumers to watch anime ranges from everything to having coherent and interesting storylines, Japanese culture elements (Thelle, 2009; Yegulalp, 2018) to unique styles and drawings (JNTO, 2011; Yegulalp, 2018). Anime can also be connected to tourism and is more specifically referred to as anime pilgrimage or anime tourism, where fans conduct travels to locations featured in anime films or television shows (Okamoto, 2015; Beeton, 2016). What motivates fans to conduct anime travels to Japan can be due to several different reasons. According to Kasai and Hsu (cited in Kirillova, Peng & Chen, 2019, p. 269) the more one is invested in the world of anime, the more one is likely to conduct related travels to Japan. In regard to the latter, Kirillova, Peng and Chen (2018) discusses that the enthusiasts can be divided into three different types, namely otakus, anime fans and anime audience. The otakus are characterized as individuals that are immersed and often perceived as obsessed with the world of anime according to Lin and Tu (cited in Kirillova et al., 2018, p. 269). Anime fans are individuals that are not as immersed in the anime world as otakus, but still possess some knowledge regarding the matter, while the anime audiences are characterized as individuals that watch anime occasionally and are not as consumed by the anime world (Kirillova et al., 2018). In this thesis, I have chosen to focus on Norwegian anime enthusiasts’ motivations for conducting anime-induced travels to Japan. I have discussed their motivations regarding theories revolving around film ‘imaginaries’, anime tourist behaviour and motivation, as well as what characterizes an experience as regarding the Experience Realms model (Pine II & Gilmore, 1999). Motivators that were individually answered by the Norwegian enthusiasts will in addition also be discussed and analysed. Such motivators revolved around ‘travelling out of interest’, ‘travelling to meet individuals with the same interests’, and to ‘experience anime theme parks’. The Norwegian anime enthusiasts’ answers have also been analysed and discussed in terms of which anime enthusiast category they fit the description of.     PAUL ROQUET A Blue Cat on the Galactic Railroad: Anime and Cosmic Subjectivity L OOKING UP AT THE STARS does not demand much in the way of movement: the muscles in the back of the neck contract, the head lifts. But in this simple turn from the interpersonal realm of the Earth’s surface to the expansive spread of the night sky, subjectivity undergoes a quietly radical transformation. Social identity falls away as the human body gazes into the light and darkness of its own distant past. To turn to the stars is to locate the material substrate of the self within the vast expanse of the cosmos. In the 1985 adaptation of Miyazawa Kenji’s classic Japanese children’s tale Night on the Galactic Railroad by anime studio Group TAC, this turn to look up at the Milky Way comes to serve as an alternate horizon of self- discovery for a young boy who feels ostracized at school and has difficulty making friends. The film experiments with the emergent anime aesthetics of limited animation, sound, and character design, reworking these styles for a larger cultural turn away from social identities toward what I will call cosmic subjectivity, a form of self-understanding drawn not through social frames, but by reflecting the self against the backdrop of the larger galaxy. The film’s primary audience consisted of school-age children born in the 1970s, the first generation to come of age in Japan’s post-1960s con- sumer society. Many would have first encountered Miyazawa’s Night on the Galactic Railroad (Ginga tetsudo¯ no yoru; also known by the Esperanto title Neokto de la Galaksia Fervojo) as assigned reading in elementary school.

El proceso de asociación del concepto de ‘otaku’ con la imagen estereotipada que la sociedad japonesa ya tenía de ese grupo, o lo que es lo mismo, la génesis de la definición actual del término, se desarrolló a lo largo de los años ochenta del siglo XX hasta que terminó popularizándose a finales de la década, gracias al infame “incidente Miyazaki”. Dos artículos publicados en revistas dedicadas a fans del anime a principios de esa década resultan clave para la comprensión de este proceso: por un lado, la definición que Shirakawa Shōmei hizo en 1981, como parte de una guía para nuevos estudiantes, de aquellos jóvenes que pertenecían a los clubs de cultura escolares; y por otro, el reconocido como primer texto que acuña el término ‘otaku’ en asociación a una imagen similar a la ofrecida por Shirakawa, el artículo publicado en tres partes en el verano de 1983 por Nakamori Akio. En este trabajo se presenta una traducción inédita al español realizada directamente desde los textos originales, así como un análisis sobre la relevancia de estos.
