Free for publication February 6, 2020 11 EET The Strokes at Flow Festival The Strokes, one of the most important alternative rock bands of the 2000s, are coming to Finland for the first time. Other confirmed acts include rising hip hop artist 070 Shake as well as two of the most interesting domestic acts around right now, Jesse Markin and Maustetytöt. All ticket types are on sale now in Ticketmaster and Tiketti. Flow Festival’s latest booking are The Strokes from New York. They play in Europe infre- quently and finally, one of the most requested bands at Flow plays Finland, too. The Strokes hit it big with their debut album Is This It in 2001. British music magazine NME named it the best album of the decade and the fourth-best of all time. The band brought the 60s garage rock sound into the 21st century and had a major impact on the music of the millennium. Since then they’ve released a total of five successful studio albums. Their best-known songs include Last Nite and Reptilia. Also confirmed for Flow is 070 Shake, hailing out of New Jersey, whose eagerly awaited debut album dropped in January and put her in the well-deserved spotlight. 070 Shake first came to people’s attention when she was featured on Kanye West’s album ye, and she has also worked with Pusha T, Nas and DJ Khaled, among others. The wonderful Jesse Markin, who’s been making waves on both the Finnish and international indie scene, and Maustetytöt, whose debut album was one of the most acclaimed and original records last year, will also be appearing. Approximately 150 artists will perform at the festival. Previously published bookings include Bon Iver, Stormzy, FKA twigs, Michael Kiwanuka, Mac DeMarco, Bikini Kill, Chro- matics, Koffee, Mabel, DJ Koze, Dixon, Gettomasa as well as Henrik! x Teksti-TV 666 – and there’s more to come. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.

We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens. We are more determined than ever to push for federal, state, and local law enforcement programs that truly serve their communities. Accordingly, we are grateful for movement of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives and urge its quick passage. The Justice in Policing Act is not about marginal change; it takes bold steps that will make a real, positive difference for law enforcement and the communities they serve. We celebrate the long- overdue rejection of qualified immunity, emphasizing that law enforcement officers themselves are not above the law – that bad cops must be held accountable and victims must have recourse. We applaud the provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices. This legislation will not only promote justice; it will establish a culture of responsibility, fairness, and respect deserving of the badge.
