It.,·W'dS the opinion of members of All Southern California Board of Football that quarterback Jim Contratt. was the young man who did most to guide the Compton Tartars to the Southern California C.l.F. gridiron-title·in 1949, and so he was named C.I.F. Player of the Year. In regu~ar-season play, Cont~atto bagged a total of 72 points: chalked up 568 yards on running, for an average of 7.47 yards per carrYil completed 42 passes for a total gain of 823 yards; and account-~ ed for a punting averag~ of 37.07 yards a boot. . Compton's Southern valifornia champion coach, Chuck Williams, contends that Contratto is the finest all-around back he has ever tutored. Coaches whose teams opposed Compton in 1949 lauded the br~lliant Tartar quarterback for his outstanding all-around perform ances. In addition to Jim Contratto, who was chosen for All-Southern California C.I.F. second-team honors in 1948, thr~e other players found their names on the A1I-C.I.F. honor roll this year, for the second time. They included South Pasadena's Bob Garrett, and Chaffey' Bill Casler, backs; and Chaffey's fine center, Rudy Valadez. Casler was a third-team AII-C.I.F. choice in 1948, but moved up to the first-team this s~ason. Bob Garrett nabbed a second-team berth in '48, but hopped~on the first-team this time, while Valadez moved up from the '48 third-team to the '49 -second-lineup. The championship Compton eleven placed three stalwarts on the All-Southern California C.I.F. squads. Mike Aguilar, a guard, and Contratto made the first team, while Joe Rose, who registered 690 yards on running plays in 10 contests, snared a third-team post. Santa Barbara, runner-up for the Southern California title, placed three men on the All-C.I.F. squads,' (Peter O'Garro, back; . H~LciS BOARD SELECTS FREMONT'S TOlvI Zi~BY FOR SOUTtIERN LE:A.GUE PLAYE:R OF YEAR

Members of the Helms Athletic ~oundation's All Southern Califor nia Board of Football picked a diamond out of the rough-and-ready Los Angeles City Championship Fremont High School forward wall - Thomas Zaby -- as their Southern League Player of the Year for the 1949 football season. Zaby performed at suard.· for the Pathfinders. He is a Senior, stands 5 feet, 10 inches in height, and tips the bea~' at 190 pounds. In recommending Tom Zaby for Southern League laurels, Coach Harry Edelson pointed out that his prize guard was exceptionally fast for a linesman, was strong and rugged, and had a powerful charge. Fremont's Southern League champs supplied five men for the AIl Southern loop first-team lineup. The'Pathfinders who grabbed berths were Donald-Wooldridge, end; Bob Merk, tackle; Mickey McBride and Otie Stroud, backs; and Zaby. Merk was the only 200-pounder on the Al1*Southern first-team squad. Stroud was the only Junior on the ros ter, all others being Seniors. Of the twenty-four players who were chosen for All-Southern first and second-team laurels, only two of them -- Bob Merk, Fremont tackle; and Norm Gilfenbain, Roosevelt back, were repeaters from the 1948 all-star Southern League team. Merk and Gilfenbain made second-team honors in '48. Bob Obradovich, sturdy Manual Arts center, was praised highly by So~thern League coaches, as well as by All Southern California Board of Football members, and had no trouble in gaining all-circuit laur els. None of the Southern ~eague backs broke any scoring records this year, so rugged was the defensive play. Pete Parkovich, Garfield's sterling quarterback, was the circuit's high-scorer, with 31 points.

JIM JACKSON CHOSSN ~SSTERN LEAGUE GRID' PLAY8R OF Y~\R FOR 1949 SSASON

fuembers of the Helms Athletic Foundation's All Southern California Board of Football had little trouble in selecting the Western League Player of the Year. They named the backfield star of the Western League Champions, Hollywood High School. He is Jim Jackson, as nifty a halfback to be found on any high school football team. Throughout the year, Jackson was t he spearhead of the Shieks' attack. He had the ability to score from w~y out, and suddenly. He handled much of the passing for his team, and he did it capably. He was truly a fine all-around back. Jim is a Senior, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighs 156 pounds. Many say his playing was largely responsible for Hollywood's being able to battle its way into t he city play-off finals, losing to mighty Fremont in the final game. The Championship Hollywood tep.I;t placed four men on the All Western League first team. They were Jackson; hobert Chung, end; Alex Aronis, guard; and Earry Lundy, guard. Los Angeles also had four of its players honored by being placed onthe first team. The only Junior to make the first team was Richard Molen of Los Angeles, a back. Molen is a real prospect, standing 6 feet, and weighing 200 pounds. Jim Jackson and Donald ~esser of Venice were the only men to repeat in the selections from t he group of 24 all-star players of 1948.

The Los Angeles coach was high for his boy, Larry l\;.larkowitz. He calls him the best running back he has ever coached,-=.a.p.d one of the best he has seen in high school football. ~arkowitz, indeed, was a flash on the gridiron, capable of breaking up any ball game with his long runs. In addition he excelled as a defensive back, tackling ferociously.

Players chosen for the A11-~;estern League first a nd second teams will be. presented with Helms Athletic Foundation certificate awards, which has been customaz;:y for t he past thirteen years.

~Jilliams was an excellent passer and ball-handler the entire season. Against the f~~midable Fremont teaQ, he performed the feat of completing 17 out of 22 passes. Teammates of Williams who also made the first team were Ernest Franco at tackle, and Simon Cordova"tat guard. Huntington Park placed the most men on the first team, four. They were Roy Dean, end; Roger Braasch, ~enter; and backs, Phillip Callas and James Smith. Two men who handled completely divergent activities for their teams, both equally out standing, were chosen to share San Fernando Valley ~eague Player of the Year honors, as co-holders•. One was Terry Debay of Canoga Park. Terry was a standout among the linemen of the league. The other was Eddie Stowell of Franklin High School. tiis great speed and cleverness made him one of the most feared backs in the city. His passing was exceptional too. Terry Debay, playing at center for Canoga Park, weighed in at 170 ,and stood 5 feet, ten inches. He is a Junior. Eddie Stowell is a Senior, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and weighs 157 pounds. No one school dominated the selections this year. This is indicative of the close competition that prevailed in the League during the season. Two players from t he All-League selections of last year, repeated the achievement: Jack Rigby of Van i·uys, and Eddie Stowell of Franklin. Franklin was in the .l'llorthern League last year. Rigby was a tower of strength in the Van Nuys line. He received finest compliments from his coach and opposing coaches and players. Aside from Stowell, none of t:le Valley League backs ran wild. George Khoury of North Ho11ywood,'however, did well in scoring nine touchdowns with his shifty, hard running. His total of 54 points was the highest in his league, and third highest in the city.

They did so on the basis of Stits' smashing play at his fullback spot for t he Gauchos. Bill is a Senior, stands 6 feet, and weighs 182 pounds. Stits was a marked player from the start of the season, having been named to the All-City first team last year. He lived up to his press notices by improvingms all-around game. He tied with Herbert Johnson of San Pedro for the high scoring honors of the League. Both backs scored 60 points, which was the second highest in the city•. Narbonne placed the most players on t he All Eastern-I\!iarine League first team--four. They were Stits, back; harold Duncan, end; James Timms, center; and Dale Atkeson, back. Several players named to this year's first and second teams were so honored last year. They were David Main, San Pedro; Anthony Califano, San Pedro; James Tirnms, Narbonne; ~jillis Thigpenn, Jordan; Dale Atkeson, Narbonne; Herbert Johnson, San Pedro; Bill Stits, Narbonne; and James \iaddell, Jordan. Along with Bill Stits, two standouts as backs were Herbert Johnson of San Pedro and Dale Atkeson of Ndrbonne. Johnson was a hard-hitting fullback with plenty of scoring punch. Atkeson was a power runner, too.

Players chosen for the All Eastern-~~rine League first and second teams will be presented with Helms Athletic Foundation certificate awards, which has been customary for the past thirteen years.
